Light Barrier Repels Mosquitoes

Yeah. I guess some scientist somewhere determined that some bird eggs had thinner shells in areas treated with DDT, than some other bird eggs in other areas that were not treated with DDT.

IIRC, no attempt was made beyond simple correlation to explain these presumably-valid observations.

And then, -poof-, no more DDT.

But at least we've still got mosquitoes, malaria and bed bugs.

PSFK Readers: Concept Gaming Ideas To Support The Climate ...

Request For PSFK Readers To Create Concepts For the Climate Reality Project
The Climate Reality Project was established by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate, Al Gore. PSFK is collaborating with the Climate Reality Project to create and share concepts that support the movement. We are inviting creative agencies (advertising, design, digital and otherwise) and brand teams to contribute ideas based on a brief around the needs of organizations like The Climate Reality Project . Agencies will be asked to use PSFK?s forthcoming Future of Gaming report as stimulus for their responses.

The concepts that best meet the brief will be published on the pages of PSFK.com, included in a downloadable PSFK x Climate Reality Project report, given a PR push to relevant national and international publications, and presented at events including PSFK?s New York launch in December.

Background
This project mirrors two successful collaborations between PSFK and UNICEF, one of which was based on PSFK?s Future of Health report and the other on PSFK?s Future of Mobile Tagging report. In each instance, agencies and brand teams from around the world contributed amazing ideas to inspire organizations, governments, corporations and academia. The ideas included product, service and communication concepts aimed at evolving healthcare for large populations.

The ideas generated were included in a version of the respective reports and PSFK produced and developed an exhibition featuring the ideas that was shown at SXSW and PSFK Conference NYC. You can see some of the results in the presentation here.

The Briefing and Timeline
PSFK will be presenting the brief in person on the evening of November 7th at our offices in NYC. We will also be distributing a digital copy of the brief to those that cannot attend. Responses must be received by November 16 and after vetting by the PSFK staff, Al Gore?s team at the Climate Reality Project will judge the best concepts. These will be announced on December 2nd at a special event.

What To Do Now

Obama to make Fort Monroe a national monument (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama wants to protect a deactivated Army fort in Virginia's Tidewater area that played an important role in the nation's slave history.

A White House official said a proclamation Obama was signing Tuesday will designate Fort Monroe as a national monument, saving it from major development and preserving its history for generations.

The fort and the land it occupies are historically significant because it was where Dutch traders first brought enslaved Africans in 1619. It remained in Union possession during the Civil War and became a place where escaped slaves could find refuge. It's also where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was once imprisoned following the Civil War.

In a 2005 cost-cutting move, the government decided to close the fort and many other military installations. In September, the Army ended its 188-year presence there.

The fort, which occupied a strategic coastal defensive position at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, was built after the British sailed north from there and burned Washington.

Beyond the historical issues, Obama also was doing some up-to-date politicking aimed at Virginia, a state that may prove crucial to his re-election bid.

"Fort Monroe has played a part in some of the darkest and some of the most heroic moments in American history. But today isn't just about preserving a national landmark. It's about helping to create jobs and grow the local economy," Obama said in a statement. "Steps like these won't replace the bold action we need from Congress to get our economy moving and strengthen middle-class families, but they will make a difference."

The White House pointed to a 2009 economic analysis commissioned by the Fort Monroe Authority that said implementing a plan to reuse the fort would help create nearly 3,000 jobs in Virginia.

Obama was exercising his authority under the Antiquities Act to declare the fort a national monument. Presidents dating to Theodore Roosevelt have used the 1906 law to protect sites deemed to have natural, historical or scientific significance, including the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The designation of Fort Monroe as a national monument would mark Obama's first use of his authority under the law.

Yani Tseng At Puerto Rico Open? Female Golfer To Be Invited To Play Against Men In PGA Event

By Sean Martin, Golfweek

The Puerto Rico Open will be happy to help Yani Tseng if she decides to play against the men.

Sidney Wolf, the tournament's general chairman, told Golfweek that he intends to offer Tseng an exemption into his event in 2012. The PGA Tour event will be held March 8-11, opposite the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral.

Tseng, the world's No. 1 female player and winner of 11 events this year, told the China News Agency last week, "If an opportunity presents itself, I would like to play in a PGA tournament to learn more from male golfers."

Wolf said he has yet to contact Tseng's camp about a potential exemption. She is in her native Taiwan this week and was unavailable for comment. Tseng's adviser, Ernie Huang, said she would likely not compete against the men "in the near future."

"We appreciate that Puerto Rico has responded so soon, but she has more goals to accomplish, such as completing the Grand Slam and qualifying for the Hall of Fame," Huang told Golfweek. "To play on (the) PGA Tour now will be too much distraction for her."

According to Golfweek research, there is no LPGA event scheduled for that week. The LPGA has yet to release its 2012 schedule.

Wolf told Golfweek, "Having the No. 1 player here would open our event to a broader audience. It could open up the possibility of a LPGA event here, and ultimately help us raise funds for our charities. It would also creates awareness of Puerto Rico globally, which would economically be very positive for the island.?

Wolf, also the president of the Puerto Rico Golf Association, has long been trying to increase visibility for his event, which began in 2008.

Trump International Golf Club - Puerto Rico, which hosts the Puerto Rico Open, is listed at 7,569 yards, but plays about 7,200 yards during the tournament, Wolf said. LPGA courses typically play about 6,500 yards. Trump International's scorecard lists six par-4s that are 448 yards or longer, but the course has relatively few forced carries, Wolf said.

Said Tseng, "I wouldn't care about the results because I'd just want to enjoy the feeling of playing with guys and learning from them to further improve my skills."

Tseng competed in Puerto Rico during the 2004 World Amateur Team Championship. She finished fourth in the individual competition, five shots behind Julieta Granada and Karin Sjodin, at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande.

"It would a great honor to have Yani play here during the celebration of our fifth anniversary of the Puerto Rico Open," Wolf said. "She has the length to compete."

Annika Sorenstam was the world's No. 1 woman when she competed against the men at the 2003 Bank of America Colonial. She shot 71-74 to miss the cut by four shots.

Hundreds of thousands at Cardinals parade, rally

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? A red sea of fans jammed downtown St. Louis on Sunday to honor the World Series champion Cardinals and send a clear message to Albert Pujols: Please stay.

An official crowd estimate was not immediately available for the parade down the streets of St. Louis and the celebration at Busch Stadium, but city officials expected several hundred thousand, and it was clearly that, if not more. The crowd was so large that people were parking more than two miles away, and interstate highways were jammed near downtown.

Pujols drew loud cheers along the parade route and a long standing ovation at the stadium. When asked on the podium if he'd like to be back for another celebration next season, he smiled sheepishly and said, "Hey, why not?"

Whether that happens remains to be seen. After 11 Hall of Fame seasons as a Cardinal, Pujols is a free agent for the first time and it isn't clear if the mid-market Cardinals will be able or willing to give a long-term contract to a player who turns 32 before next season, despite his career .328 average, 455 homers and status as a team icon.

Pujols' pending free agency and a chilly, breezy and overcast afternoon did nothing to dampen the celebratory spirit. People began staking out the good spots many hours before the parade, climbed trees and leaned out office windows for better views. Nearly everyone was dressed in red except for a few in Rams blue who made the short walk from the Edward Jones Dome after the football game. Even the Rams added to the joy of the day, beating New Orleans 31-21 for their first win after an 0-6 start.

High school marching bands played along the parade route. Vendors sold hot dogs and peanuts. Fathers and mothers hoisted small children on their shoulders to wave at the passing red and white pickup trucks carrying Cardinals past ? Lou Brock, Red Schoendienst ? and present. The biggest cheers appeared to be for Pujols, Lance Berkman, Yadier Molina, Chris Carpenter and postseason hero David Freese, who was Most Valuable Player in both the NL championship series and the World Series.

Freese, a native of St. Louis County, recalled sitting in a California Burger King in December 2007 when "I got the greatest phone call of my life, that I had been traded to the St. Louis Cardinals."

Manager Tony La Russa led the parade atop a beer wagon pulled by the Budweiser Clydesdales, followed by a truck carrying owner Bill DeWitt Jr. clinging to the World Series trophy.

The parade ended inside Busch Stadium, where a sold-out crowd watched the celebration. In fact, the ballpark rally sold out in 90 minutes after the Cardinals won the clincher.

"This 11th Cardinals world championship will always be remembered as one of baseball's greatest achievements," DeWitt said, noting the Cardinals had to win four elimination games this postseason.

La Russa, too, paid respect to his team for never surrendering, even when 10? games out wild-card contention on Aug. 25, or when they faced three postseason opponents with superior records ? Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Texas.

"What these guys did so many times facing elimination, it's a lesson for all of us," La Russa said. "They never quit."

The celebration was the culmination of a four-day party in St. Louis that began with the stunning win in Game 6, when the Cardinals rallied five times and in two straight innings were within a strike from elimination before Freese won the game 10-9 with a leadoff homer in the 11th.

Friday's 6-2 win in Game 7 set off a frenzied celebration that lasted well into Saturday.

Players appreciated the response from the fans.

"I'll never forget any of this," outfielder Allen Craig, who hit three homers in the World Series, said. "It's been great."

Fans said they were still jubilant about the team's amazing turnaround.

"It just seemed improbable," said Chris Ambrose, 24, of Chesterfield, as he watched the parade. "It's one of the greatest World Series runs of all time."

Jenny Ulrich and her husband, Jeff, of Lonedell, Mo., brought their two young daughters to the parade.

The Cardinals "are just part of what our family does," Ulrich said. Pointing to the girls, "they're the next generation of Cardinals Nation."

Mayor Francis Slay called Sunday's celebration "unbelievable."

"The Cardinals fans are the best in baseball and when the Cardinals win the World Series, there's nothing like it," Slay said.

Garrett not pointing fingers after blowout

Tony Romo

updated 7:53 p.m. ET Oct. 31, 2011

IRVING, Texas - There was plenty of blame to go around after the Cowboys' 34-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas' first blowout loss of the season, but coach Jason Garrett refused to point fingers at anyone on his team Monday.

"We need to do our jobs better to not have games like that," Garrett said.

The screening of the Eagles game tape merely underscored to players and coaches that the Cowboys were simply overwhelmed by a division rival coming off a bye week that badly needed a victory to climb back into the NFC East race.

"I don't think they did anything on offense or defense that surprised us," Garrett said. "We've seen a lot of the stuff they've done and were prepared for it. Unfortunately, we didn't execute as well as we needed to."

The Cowboys are also dealing with injuries to linebacker Sean Lee (left wrist), punter Mat McBriar (left foot) and cornerback Mike Jenkins (right hamstring).

Garrett said all three were being evaluated and their conditions would be updated later this week based on test results.

Lee, the team's leading tackler, and Jenkins, a starting cornerback, were injured in Sunday's game. McBriar has been hampered by a foot problem for over a week, and rookie placekicker Dan Bailey had to handle the Cowboys' final two punts on Sunday.

The good news for the Cowboys: a favorable upcoming schedule, starting with Sunday's home game against Seattle.

Four of the next five opponents ? Seattle, Washington, Miami and Arizona ? have a combined record of 6-22.

The exception during that five-week span: the 5-2 Buffalo Bills, who visit Cowboys Stadium on Nov. 13.

No matter the opponent, there are no guaranteed wins for the Cowboys, not if they turn in another performance like Sunday's.

The Eagles ran at will against a defense that had been giving up about 70 yards rushing per game, best in the league entering last weekend. Overall, Philly rolled up 495 total yards and held the ball for over 42 minutes.

LeSean McCoy rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns while Michael Vick passed for 279 yards and a pair of TDs.

"We didn't do the job in all three phases of the game," Cowboys safety Abram Elam said on Monday. "We didn't want to lose that game, a divisional game we had to win. To lose the way we did was painful."

Dallas' offense wasn't much better, managing only 267 net yards and 12 first downs. The offensive line was unable to protect quarterback Tony Romo, who was sacked four times and hit often by an Eagles defense that didn't blitz much.

The Cowboys averaged 8.5 yards per play on the ground, but they were only able to get off 10 running plays because they were trailing 24-0 by halftime and were forced to throw as they tried to catch up.

"The Eagles just scored a bunch of points early and we just did not move the ball well in the first half," Cowboys receiver Miles Austin said on Sunday after catching only three passes for 27 yards.

Elam said he expects future opponents to take note of the game plan employed by the Eagles.

"This is a copycat league," Elam said. "They'll see things that work against you and try to attack you the same way. That's why we try to make corrections, try to improve on things."

One bright spot for the Cowboys on Sunday night: linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who had four sacks and 11 tackles.

"It was an awesome performance," Garrett said. "We were behind, but everybody on our team continued to play, and there was no better example of that than DeMarcus Ware. It's almost what you expect from the guy, week in and week out. What makes him great is the approach that he takes. Even in defeat, where we didn't play very well, he showed up again."
