German President Christian Wulff?s loan scandal adds to Merkel?s pressure

German President Christian Wulff came under increased scrutiny after reports that he telephoned a newspaper editor in an effort to block a story revealing a private home loan he received in 2008.

The incident presents German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who nominated Wulff in 2010, with a new political headache as she scrambles to find a solution to the debt crisis.

Bild, Germany?s most-read newspaper, said the president called its editor, Kai Diekmann, on Dec 12 and left a voice-mail message expressing anger at the forthcoming story and threatening legal action.

Bild published the story Dec 13 that Wulff negotiated a 500,000 euro ($646,000) loan from the wife of a businessman friend to pay for a new home when he was Lower Saxony state premier. Wulff apologized for not revealing the loan last month in a bid to calm criticism that risks becoming a distraction to Merkel.

Merkel hasn?t addressed Wulff?s travails since she said before her Christmas vacation departure last month that he had her ?full confidence.?

Wulff, 52, a former deputy leader of Merkel?s Christian Democratic Union party, was picked by the chancellor to replace the previous incumbent, Horst Koehler, after Koehler?s surprise resignation in May 2010. Wulff was elected by a special national assembly on June 30 of that year only after the third attempt.

The chancellor?s majority in the assembly has since narrowed to as few as two seats from 21 seats after regional election defeats throughout 2011.

Merkel is pushing for a blueprint on closer fiscal ties in Europe by the end of March to combat the crisis. She is due to host French President Nicolas Sarkozy Jan 9 for talks in Berlin with the threat of a credit-rating downgrade still hanging over the euro area.

Merkel, in her New Year?s address, pledged to defend the euro and warned of hard times to come.

Holocaust garb causes outrage in Israel faith row (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Ultra-Orthodox Jewish demonstrators caused outrage on Sunday by dressing children as Holocaust victims to protest against what they see as persecution of devout Jews seeking gender separation in Israel.

A boy wearing a cloth cap and the sidecurls of an Orthodox Jew was the centerpiece of the Jerusalem protest late on Saturday.

His hands were raised in surrender and a yellow Star of David inscribed with "Jude," Jew, in German, was sewn on his jacket. The image mimicked a memorable photo of a terrified Jewish boy during a roundup in the Nazi-occupied Warsaw Ghetto in World War Two.

"Nazis, Nazis," some of the protesters shouted at police.

Other children and young men were dressed in replicas of striped concentration camp uniforms at the protest attended by hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews in traditional black garb.

"Prisoner uniforms and yellow patches with the word "Jew" written on them in German are shocking and appalling," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement.

"The use of yellow patches and small children raising their hands in surrender crosses a red line which the ultra-Orthodox leadership, who are largely responsible people, must not accept," he said.

EMOTIONAL DEBATE

Israel is in the grip of an emotional debate over attempts by Jewish zealots to impose and enforce gender separation in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods and other public places.

Much of the controversy has stemmed from ultra-Orthodox men trying to force women to sit in the back of public buses in deference to religious beliefs against any mixing of the sexes in public.

President Shimon Peres has described the debate as a battle for the soul of the Jewish state.

The issue jumped to the top of the public agenda in Israel nearly two weeks ago when an eight-year-old girl complained on television that ultra-Orthodox men spat at her on the way to school, accusing her of dressing immodestly.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has political alliances with ultra-Orthodox parties but is facing mounting public anger over such incidents, has vowed to crack down on zealots who harass women.

Posters at the protest accused the "Zionist entity" of carrying out "an unprecedented attack on the 'Haredi' community," referring to ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Some groups within the ultra-Orthodox community do not recognize Israel, saying such a state can only be established with the coming of the Messiah.

"You will not be able to impose on us sinful (Western) culture. We will remain faithful to the laws of Holy Torah," read one protest sign at Saturday's demonstration.

Speakers at the protest singled out an activist, jailed for vandalizing a computer store he deemed heretical in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood, as a victim of what they called government persecution.

Avner Shalev, chairman of Yad Vashem, Israel's national memorial to the six million Jews killed by the Nazis, said the protesters' use of Holocaust imagery was a "profound insult" to survivors.

"This is totally unacceptable and degrades Jewish values," Shalev said on Israel Radio.

Police car-SUV crash: Wife of Braves trainer dies (AP)

ATLANTA ? The Atlanta Braves has offered condolences to head trainer Jeff Porter, saying team members were "deeply saddened" after authorities reported the trainer's wife was killed in a collision between a Georgia State Patrol car and an SUV driven by Porter.

Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said the trooper was traveling in Atlanta with lights and siren activated Saturday afternoon when the vehicles collided at an intersection. Wright says the trooper was attempting to aid another trooper trying to stop a motorcyclist.

Authorities say Kathy Porter, a passenger in the SUV, died. Police say Jeff Porter and two other passengers ? the couple's 19-year-old son David and a friend ? were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries and later released.

The trooper was examined at the hospital and released.

Israel: Haredi demonstration sees use of Holocaust symbols, denounced

Demonstration causes uproar following the use of men, children in Holocaust-reminiscent striped pajamas with yellow patches

Hundreds of Haredim demonstrated against the ?Zionist assault? following the recent civil uproar over incidents of segregation.

Demonstrators Under Fire over Holocaust Symbols

The latest Haredi protest in Jerusalem has caused a stir after kids participating in the demonstration were seen wearing yellow patches and striped pajamas like those Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust.

Avner Shalev, Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate said in response: ?I condemn the use of Holocaust symbols in a protest of any kind. This is reprehensible. The Holocaust is nothing like what goes on in Israel. ?

Shortly after the demonstration, Shas? spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef commented on violent acts by haredim in connection to women?s exclusion and said, ?There are people who do things which our Torah forbids and they must be condemned.?

He said that the Torah advocates peaceful behavior and not violence. Speaking in his weekly class, he said: ?We do not hate seculars. On the contrary ? we love them.?

Opposition Chairwoman Tzipi Livni also commented on the protest on her Facebook page. ?There is no protest in the world that can justify this. Even within the debate we are holding there are boundaries that cannot be crossed. I hope that haredi leaders will condemn these acts.?

Just when you wonder how far low some people will go, they reach rock bottom, then pull out a shovel and start digging?.

Red Apple drivers question union

Red Apple driver Cynthia Origin looks on as passenger Ray Steiglman and his service dog Spank board the Express Line on Wednesday. (Kurt Madar The Daily Times)

FARMINGTON ? A new union has come to town, and it's already flexing a little muscle.

A year ago, First Transit, the largest transportation company in the U.S., won the bid to operate Farmington's Red Apple Transit System. Prior to that, the red buses were operated by Presbyterian Medical Service.

Since First Transit took over, Red Apple drivers have seen a wage freeze, lost a dollar an hour in pay and had a drastic cut to their benefit package.

In response, the 12 drivers unionized in October, becoming part of the United Transportation Union.

"We were told that the transition was going to be seamless," said Red Apple driver and union spokesman Steve Moots. "It wasn't. One of the biggest issues is that they took away our health insurance."

Insurance under PMS was through Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Moots said "it was excellent insurance."

The transit company replaced the insurance plan with one that places a dollar limit on the coverage it provides, something that is only legal because the company received a waiver from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Under the Affordable Care Act, if a plan applies a dollar limit, it can't be less than $750,000 a year. With the waiver, the plan is limited to $10,000 a year of coverage with high deductibles and many procedures left uncovered.

"They came back to us and said we went to bat for you and got you some insurance," Moots said. "What they did was get a limited benefit PPO that didn't

pay much of anything."

Limited benefit plans are most often used by companies that employ minimum wage workers and experience high turnover. It is also used by companies that employ seasonal labor.

"The reality didn't sink in until the claims started coming in," Moots said. "A couple of drivers had health issues by the middle of the year, and their claims started coming back unpaid."

Moots completely lost his insurance because he is a part-time driver.

Cynthia Orgin has driven Red Apple buses for the last three years.

"The thing of it is, we pay a lot of money for insurance," she said. "I was hospitalized for three days, and they only paid 10 percent. Now I am stuck with a bill for over $10,000."

Orgin had no idea this was going to be the case.

"I had to get a procedure done, and the doctor checked with the insurance company who said I had to pay a certain amount," Orgin said. "I paid it, and after the procedure was done, the doctor called me and said the insurance wasn't going to pay for it because they said I was a seasonal employee. I'm not a seasonal employee."

One of the ways companies get the federal waiver for limited benefit insurance is by classifying their employees as seasonal, yet Red Apple drivers drive year-round.

Moots did some research and discovered that First Transit is unionized in a lot of other places.

"They may offer different insurance, but if you don't have a union, you don't even get your foot in the door," Moots said.

So the drivers decided to unionize. Of the 12 drivers, 11 voted to form a union. They incorporated Oct. 1.

Since then, the newly formed union has repeatedly reached out to First Transit in an effort to start negotiations. Until last week, First Transit hadn't replied.

According to First Transit company spokesperson Timothy Stokes, the reason the transit company hadn't responded was that letters sent by the union had the wrong address.

"We didn't get a letter until one was forwarded to us by the company at the other address," Stokes said. "We immediately talked to some managers in the area and hope to have a meeting planned around mid- or late January."

Stokes' claim that the company hopes to have meetings in January is news to Bonnie Morr, alternate vice president of United Transportation Union, who was instrumental in helping the Red Apple drivers unionize.

"So far, all we have received is a very brief email with their contact information," Morr said. "We got that last week."

Despite having the wrong address, which came from the National Labor Relations Board, Morr said she has made repeated efforts to reach the company by telephone.

"At this point, it has been extremely difficult getting in touch with First Transit," Morr said. "I have been calling their labor council since October, and that individual never bothered to get back to me. It's very unusual. Generically, when there is an election and the union contacts a company, they usually get back in a reasonable amount of time."

The new union is small, but it still has bargaining power, which is something Moots and the other drivers were worried about.

Being new to unions, they weren't sure how much power they would have.

"We are worried that if we strike, they could just hire 12 new drivers," Moots said. "Then we would be completely out of a job. For many of us who are older, this is our last job."

That worry is pretty much unfounded.

"Not only does being in a union give them more strength because now they speak with one voice, they also have access to our experience and knowledge," Morr said. "If they did decide to strike, First Transit wouldn't be able to just hire new drivers without violating labor laws. Because Red Apple has federal funding in order to support the vehicles or operations, it gives certain job protections."

Farmington officials aren't involved in the dispute.

"It's really an issue between First Transit, who employs them, and the drivers," said Assistant City Manager Bob Campbell. "Of course, we are interested in a continued quality of service."

According to Campbell, First Transit received the contract for running the transit system because it had the most competitive bid.

"The city pays First Transit $54,197 a month," said General Services Office Manager Joanna Oliver. "This January, it goes up 3 percent."

The city paid $54,869 a month to PMS.

"Because that's considered an operating expense, the Federal Transportation Authority refunds the city 50 percent," Oliver said.

The drivers agree that the city isn't involved in the dispute and feel city officials have treated them with respect.

"We really don't want to strike," Moots said. "The city is desiring to get the bus system better, and they are involving us."

For Morr, it's all about what's fair.

"This is a small community and they already aren't high wage earners," Morr said. "But they are your residents and they support the community. When I heard that they had their wages cut and insurance slashed, I thought it was just awful."
