A Brooklyn congregation has a new place to pray after being forced out of its original location.

Congregants at Abundant Life Church attended their first service at a church on Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights on Sunday.

On December 5, they were forced out of P.S. 91 on Maple Street in Flatbush when the Supreme Court ruled against hearing a case that would allow churches to rent public school spaces.

Their new home, in the annex of an existing church, was discovered with the help of Pastor and New York Assemblyman Karim Camara.

"When you are comfortable in the home that your church worships. I don't want to use 'afraid,' but you have to do everything in your power to find a suitable place if the court decision in fact stands that we are prohibited from renting [Department of Education] space," said Camara. "Things just fell into place."

"I think the move is an amazing thing. After being a church for two years we finally get our own space, and I'm just so happy," said congregant Latonya Brathwaite.

"I think God had it all planned. We knew we were going to be here from the time that we came in and we saw it and we just left it in his hands," said congregant Karen Khan.

Church officials said the move may be a blessing in disguise. They are now going to be offering three services a week instead of just one, and they are even talking about adding a fourth.

"In this community, we can grab more people to bring them into our church and make our church grow bigger," said congregant Harold Williams.

"I think we have better transportation around here. Trains and buses are a little easier to maneuver in this area then where we were previously. So that's a plus," said parishioner Erica South.

More than 60 churches in the city have until February 12 to find a new home, when the Department of Education's ban on allowing churches in their schools takes effect.

Camara said he would do his part to help the other affected churches find new homes.

(AP) ? Police fired tear gas to break up a sleep-in protest at a traffic roundabout in northern Nigeria early Thursday, as tensions mounted over spiraling gasoline prices in this oil-rich nation.

Trade unions are calling for a nationwide indefinite strike to begin Monday, and more protests are expected across Africa's most populous nation in the coming days.

The overnight protest in Kano shows how far anger already has spread across Nigeria about the government suddenly removing subsidies on gasoline prices. For more than two decades, those subsidies had kept fuel cheap in a nation where few see any direct benefits from Nigeria's oil wealth.

Protesters said officers had detained dozens of people in Kano, the major city of Nigeria's Muslim north.

The protests began there on Monday and reached a pinnacle Wednesday as demonstrators camped out in a major traffic roundabout in the city, stalling traffic.

The protesters made plans to remain in the roundabout overnight, sleeping on donated mattresses. About 1 a.m. Thursday, protesters say police moved into the roundabout, firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.

One protester, Audu Bulama Bukarti, wrote a text message from inside a police station to The Associated Press, saying that police had threatened "to kill us inside the cell." He said other protesters had been taken to a local hospital after suffering injuries as police moved in.

He said he was released Thursday morning by police.

Local police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya acknowledged police broke up the protest, but denied that any protester had been detained.

"It was late in the night drugs addicts and hoodlums took advantage ... to burn tires," Majiya told the AP.

The spokesman said people could continue to protest if they coordinate their activities with police. However, on Thursday, security forces had increased their presence around Kano.

Authorities used radio to air public announcements against the continuing protest, saying that officers would combat any illegal gathering or rally not permitted by the state police commissioner.

Nigeria's government announced Sunday that it would stop paying a gas subsidy to gas importers effective immediately and invest part of the $8 billion in savings for much-needed infrastructure upgrades and social programs to improve the quality of life of Nigerians.

Few, though, have seen any benefit from the country's vast oil wealth over decades of production, and a culture of distrust of government permeates Nigerian society. Most residents subsist on less than $2 a day and the subsidy removal saw gas prices rise from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter).

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation, produces about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, and is a top supplier to the United States, but virtually all of its petroleum products are imported after years of graft, mismanagement and violence at its refineries.

The National Labor Congress and the Trade Union Congress, two major labor groups in the country, said they plan to begin a nationwide, indefinite strike Monday over the government's actions.

Philippines: 5 foreign terror suspects in south (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? At least five foreign extremists have been hiding on a remote southern Philippine island and could help link Filipino radicals to potential overseas financiers and combat trainers like the al-Qaida terrorist network, a military commander said Tuesday.

The five, who have been roaming the tropical jungles of Jolo island in Sulu province, are led by U.S.-trained Malaysian engineer Zulkifli bin Hir, one of the remaining key terror suspects in Southeast Asia, regional military commander Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer said.

"They seem to be actively moving around Sulu," Ferrer told reporters.

U.S. troops have been providing training, intelligence and other noncombat help to underfunded Filipino troops for years to help crush local Abu Sayyaf militants and the foreign extremists they shelter, including members of the Indonesia-based militant network Jemaah Islamiyah.

U.S.-backed Philippine offensives have been credited for the capture and killing of hundreds of Abu Sayyaf fighters and their foreign allies in Sulu, an impoverished Muslim region about 590 miles (950 kilometers) south of Manila, and in outlying island provinces.

Washington has offered huge rewards for some of the terror suspects, including $5 million for Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan. The Malaysian has been accused of involvement in past bombings and of helping secure funds and weapons for the Abu Sayyaf from foreign donors.

Ferrer said the other foreign militants are a Singaporean identified as Abdullah Ali who uses the guerrilla name Muawiyah, and an Indonesian identified only as Qayim. The two others are Amin Baco, probably a Malaysian who uses the alias Abu Jihad, and another Indonesian identified as Sa'ad, he said.

Troops have obtained pictures of Marwan and Muawiyah, Ferrer said.

Ferrer, who heads the military's Western Mindanao Command, said he was unaware of other foreign militants outside his command. A government threat assessment report issued last year seen by The Associated Press lists 12 identified foreign terror suspects, including those named by Ferrer.

Aside from a yearslong military manhunt, troops have been launching offensives to kill or capture Abu Sayyaf militants and destroy their strongholds to deny foreign radicals sanctuaries, Ferrer said.

Military officials have accused hard-line commanders of a larger Philippine rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, of harboring Jemaah Islamiyah militants in southern Mindanao region's marshy heartland. The 11,000-strong Moro group, which is engaged in peace talks with the government, has denied any links with foreign terrorist groups.
