A genetic study of thousands of specimens of sharks and rays has uncovered scores of potential new species and is fuelling biologists? debates over the organisation of the family tree of these animals. The work also raises the possibility that some species are even more endangered than previously thought.
Sharks and rays are key predators in marine ecosystems, but the life cycles and population numbers of many species remain poorly understood. The family tree of these animals ? which are part of the elasmobranch subclass ? has proved similarly opaque, with little agreement among researchers over their evolutionary relationships.
Gavin Naylor, a biologist at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and his colleagues sequenced samples from 4,283 specimens of sharks and rays as part of a major effort to fill the gaps. The team found 574 species, of which 79 are potentially new, they report in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.
Naylor says that he was ?flabbergasted? by the result, especially because the sequencing covered only around half of the roughly 1,200 species thought to exist worldwide.
The huge number of new species found raises immediate conservation concerns ? the reason that some of these purported new species have gone undetected is probably their close resemblance to already-identified species. The populations of such species may, therefore, be even smaller than estimated, as what was thought to be one population may instead be several smaller populations of separate species.
For example, Naylor?s work suggests that the endangered scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is actually two separate species. ?Scalloped hammerheads in general have taken a huge hit, so it may be even worse than has been documented if there?s more than one species out there,? he says.
Naylor is now working on a project with the US National Science Foundation to catalogue the diversity of sharks and rays and is working to assist the International Union for Conservation of Nature to map which species are where in the world.
?This will have an impact on what is considered endangered and the fragility of different organisms,? he says. ?These are sentinel species of all sorts of other organisms in the sea which are probably undergoing similar or worse kinds of impacts.?
Circling the answer
One of Naylor?s collaborators, William White, an ichthyologist at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Hobart, says that their work also highlights some of the problems with the use of genetic information in zoology.
The increasing use of molecular techniques provides a new means to scrutinize the relationship between sharks and rays, he says. But it also shows that some of the existing ideas about their relationships are problematic. ?Part of the problem is some researchers mining data blindly without a good understanding of where that data has come from in the first place and presuming the names are correct which in many cases they are not.?
White and Naylor stress that molecular techniques are only of one many available tools and should be combined with conventional taxonomic work.
Ximena V?lez-Zuazo is a biologist at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and the lead author of a 2011 paper2 that Naylor says suffers from some of the flaws that stem from relying solely on molecular information. Though she strongly defends her group's work, she agrees that shark phylogeny is still a work in progress.

As interesting as I found this article I am a little bit shocked that you are encouraging the cat to continue killing, I am from Australia and as much as cats are pets they are also feral and what they are killing as a gift to us is native birds and wildlife, we should be teaching our cats that what they are doing is not okay by reacting negatively towards this act and encourage them in other fields so they are eventually conditioned to know that we will love them no matter what, and especially when they aren?t harming another living creature.
Despite professing a love for nature, the commenter is displaying a fundamental misunderstanding of nature.

I certainly don?t encourage cats to hunt; my own, very strong, preference is to keep my cats inside. But not everyone does that; and in any case, cats are born to do it.
As solitary predators, cats don?t have the advantage of a pack. As a ground-bound mammal, they don?t possess the physical edge of flight. All things considered, cats might be the most amazing hunting animal on earth.
It turns out that cats actually protect birds by killing rodents, who are deadly menaces to birds; far more of a danger than cats, who prefer to catch and eat rodents.
My article does not ?encourage the cat to continue killing.? It simply explains the behavior of what is, after all, a beautifully fashioned working predator. We aren?t going to condition a cat out of millions of years of survival instincts. It?s not possible.
Every living being is a bundle of all that has gone before; millions of years of built-in brain templates that are still here because they got us here. Cats are as much a gift of nature as any other part of wildlife. Just as we are; predators, both of us.
It?s not that I?m not sympathetic to the humanitarian concerns involved in deciding not to eat animals. But as long as we take pills, use roads, and read books; we are using animal products. These search engine results show the difficulty of trying to live in a world without animal products.
There?s a good reason it is so difficult to avoid animal products, and why vegan diets are so tricky to stick with long-term. Civilization cannot exist without animals; they are part of the cycle of Life for all of us. This is why I think a better strategy is to encourage humane animal practices, because none of us are getting along without all of us.
The comment expresses what I call the Vegan Fallacy. It would be nice to think we can all live happily as vegans on a planet where even vegetables can grow in sterile soil that nothing has ever died in. But that is a fantasy; it is not reality.
Plants grow in soil full of nutrients that are based on animals returning their elements to the earth. Animals live by eating other living beings; plant or animal. On and on it goes, the inescapable cycle of Life.
Because the wishful-thinking alternative is a place where nothing can die; and nothing can grow or live, either. Just as magnets have positive and negative poles, and there can be no yin without yang, so there is no life without death.
A place without death is also a place without babies and puppies and kittens.
I don?t want to live in a world without babies and puppies and kittens.

Under the Justice Department's COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) program, 629 of the 800 police jobs funded for the next three years must go to veterans who served at least 180 days' active duty since 9/11. This is the first time the 18-year-old COPS program has required cities and counties seeking grants to partner with military agencies to advance veteran employment.

A will is needed because it provides an overview of how a person wants his or her property distributed at death. Wills are also important because a person can nominate a person to become a guardian for his or her children within a will. A person could also create a revocable trust if a person does want to draft a will. A trust is a relationship that is established by a trust instrument, and it holds assets for a person's benefit while that person is alive. In addition, a trust can be established to distribute assets to a designated person after the settlor, the person who established the trust, or a beneficiary dies. Unlike a will, the property within the trust will not pass through the probate process. A health care proxy is important because it establishes what person the creator wants to make health care decisions should that person become unable to make those decisions for themselves. A power of attorney is important because it establishes the person that the creator of the instrument wants to make financial decision on his or her behalf should that person become incapacitated.
