The Russian Orthodox Church has thrown its support behind a government proposal to bar adoption of Russian children by US couples.
Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, the chief foreign-affairs spokesman for the Moscow patriarchate, said that it would be unjust to send orphans abroad because ?they won?t get a truly Christian upbringing.?
The public stand by the Orthodox Church is seen by skeptics as another sign of the Moscow patriarchate?s determination to win favor with the government.
