ALPENA - The second annual TriPoint Church of God and Resurrection Lutheran Church Community Garden kickoff is Friday at the corner of Brooke and Grant streets. The signup to plant a 5-by-8-foot plot will be that night, along with outdoor family games and a hot dog dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. Immediately after dinner, community members will begin planting their plots. Seeds and plants are provided, or you can bring your own vegetables or flowers to plant.
"The garden was started with the idea there are so many people living in apartments around the area that don't have a place to grow fresh vegies," TriPoint Church of God secretary Ruth LeSage said. "It gives them a chance to grown their own produce."
"It's a wonderful community project," she said. "People come together and get to know each other while gardening."
Resurrection Lutheran Church member Stacy Bauer said the garden is open to anyone in the community who would like a plot.
"We will have plants, seeds, and some tools available for people to use," Bauer said. "The plots that aren't gardened by community members will be gardened by the churches, and the food will be donated to local food pantries and the local soup kitchen."
Grant Sork, member of the TriPoint Church of God, was the caretaker of the garden last year and will resume his position again this year.
"Grant oversees all the planting and gardening," Bauer said. "He's our architect of the garden."
Seeds for the garden were donated by the two churches, and volunteers help to weed and water the garden if the gardeners need some assistance in maintenance.
