- 4.1% (60-month, new car)
- 4.69% (36-month, used car)
Auto loan rates were mixed this week in Bankrate's national survey.
The average rate for a 60-month new-car loan stayed steady at 4.1 percent, but the average rate for a 48-month new-car loan gave up ground, falling 1 basis point to 4.02 percent. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point.
Rates on used-car loans also were lower, with the average rate on a 36-month used-car loan down 2 basis points to 4.69 percent.
This week, Chrysler said it would not comply with a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration request to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles manufactured from 1993-2004 and 2002-2007, respectively, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press. The NHTSA blamed a design flaw that contributed to fatal fires, killing 51 people in 37 accidents. The agency's request had its roots in a petition filed in 2009 by a consumer interest group called the Center for Auto Safety. The center alleges that Chrysler's choice to place fuel tanks behind the rear axle in Jeep Cherokees has contributed to vehicle fires.
