Ramos welcomes chance to go beyond bad-guy roles

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Luis Antonio Ramos, starring in the new ABC series "Lucky 7," became emotional talking about the chance to play something other than a stereotypical Latino character.

"I was tired of playing bad guys and stabbing people in the neck," Ramos said Sunday.

Such work was "sucking away my soul," forcing him to leave Los Angeles and seek more satisfying parts, including on stage, he told a Television Critics Association session.

In "Lucky 7," Ramos' character works at a gas station in Queens, N.Y., and is a devoted family man. The series follows the impact that a shared lottery win has on the station's employees.

"That's the lottery for me," Ramos said of his character, choking up as he discussed the issue.

Civil rights groups and others have long criticized Hollywood for failing to reflect American diversity and for showing minorities in a limited light. Latinos often have been relegated to gang members or marginalized as domestic workers on TV series.

The ensemble cast of "Lucky 7," which debuts Sept. 24, includes Matt Long, Anastasia Phillips and Isiah Whitlock Jr. It's based on a British series, "The Syndicate," and includes that show's Lorraine Bruce.

Ramos lauded the U.S. series for putting working-class people in the spotlight.

"At the end of the day, that's what America's about. It's about the 99 percent and how they get through the day," he said.

The Puerto Rican-born Ramos has a full resume, with a long list of credits that include TV's "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Burn Notice," the films "Do the Right Thing" and "Sea of Love," and award-winning stage work.

A 1944 Electromagnetic Radiation Poster Makes Learning Retro Chic

There are lots of interactions and fields around us all the time that we can't see. Like gravity. We can always count on gravity to be there when we trip and face plant. And we interact with all different frequencies on the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation every day, which is usually fine and sometimes deadly. And you might be feeling good about all this physical awareness, but don't. People have known about this stuff for a long time and they've been making unbelievably detailed infographics about it for at least 70 years.

Former White Stripes singer Jack White has provided an answer in court to his former wife Karen Elson, who had a restraining order issued against him last week and has petitioned that he submit to a psychiatric exam.

Rolling Stone obtained court documents from Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville in which White objects to being characterized as an unfit father to their two children. In the countermotion, his lawyer Cathy Speers Johnson writes, "The reason for filing this response is that Mr. White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not, violent toward his wife and children."

The note also refers to emails the pair sent one another, including one dated May 19, 2013, where she calls him an "amazing father." The motion for a psychiatric exam is described as "inflammatory . . . . disingenuous, fraudulent and retaliatory and simply designed to malign him in the public record or to gain an upper hand in this litigation."

He said he did not oppose the restraining order, but objected to limited communication with his children.

White noted that Elson left the children in his care after signing the restraining order affidavit and then went on a "work/pleasure trip" in New York. "One who was truly fearful of another would not leave their children alone with that person for 10 days," the response noted. "The truth of the matter is that Ms. Elson is not fearful for herself or the parties' minor children."

In Elson's filing, she had referred to a musician White had particular enmity toward ? going so far as to wanting to have his child removed from a class where that musician's child was also taking part ? and White's countermotion revealed that the singer in question was The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.?

In one email, writes? The Hollywood Reporter, White called Aeurbach a "derogatory name" and said he didn't want to spend the next 12 years of their children's schooling "with people trying to lump us together."

White's spokesperson told THR that he would only comment in court filings on the case, and Auerbach's spokesperson said he had no comment. Auerbach?is also going through a divorce, as announced in February.

Twitter UK Rape Threats - Business Insider

wang tony

Tony Wang / Twitter

Tony Wang

The boss of Twitter UK has offered a personal apology on the social networking site to female victims of abuse, vowing to do more to protect them.

Tony Wang said the threats they received were "simply not acceptable" and pledged to do more to tackle trolling.

Writing on his Twitter account, he said: "There is more we can and will be doing to protect our users against abuse. That is our commitment.

"The abuse they've received is simply not acceptable. It's not acceptable in the real world, and it's not acceptable on Twitter.

"I personally apologize to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through."

The apology came as the company announced it was updating its rules to clampdown on harassment, making it clear that abuse will not be tolerated

Police said they are investigating allegations by eight people of abuse on the microblogging site.

Scotland Yard said its e-crime unit is looking into the claims, three of which involve incidents outside London.

Twitter found itself in the spotlight after three female journalists said they had been the subject of bomb threats on the site and two received threats of rape.

The revelations sparked a backlash online, with an online petition calling for Twitter to add a "report abuse" button to tweets attracting more than 120,000 signatures.

In a message posted on its blog today, Twitter's senior director for trust and safety, Del Harvey, and UK general manager Tony Wang said it has updated its rules in light of feedback from customers.

"It comes down to this: people deserve to feel safe on Twitter," they said.

The company has updated its rules, clarifying that it will not tolerate abusive behavior, they said, adding that an "in-tweet" report button has been added so people can report abusive behavior directly from a tweet.

"We want people to feel safe on Twitter, and we want the Twitter rules to send a clear message to anyone who thought that such behaviour was, or could ever be, acceptable," they wrote.

They said additional staff are being added to the teams which handle abuse reports and the company is working with the UK Safer Internet Centre, which promotes the safe and responsible use of technology.

"We are committed to making Twitter a safe place for our users," they said, adding: "We're here, and we're listening to you."

The bomb threat tweet was sent to Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, Independent columnist Grace Dent and Europe editor of Time magazine Catherine Mayer, which Dent took a screen grab of and posted for her Twitter followers to see.

The message was also sent to a number of other women, including Sara Lang, a social media manager at US campaign group AARP.

In separate incidents, Labour MP Stella Creasy and campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez, who successfully fought for a woman's face to appear on ?10 banknotes, were threatened on Twitter with rape. Two arrests have already been made in relation to those threats.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said an investigation into eight allegations had been launched into all the claims.

The force said: "Detectives from the Specialist Organised & Economic Crime Command have taken responsibility for the investigations into a number of allegations recently made to the MPS relating to allegations of malicious communication made on the social networking site Twitter.

"The Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU), who hold the police national cyber crime remit, is now investigating allegations made by eight people that they have been subject to harassment, malicious communication or bomb threats.

"Whilst outside PCeU's cyber operational remit, the MPS has taken the decision to central ise the individual investigations, including three that are outside London, to make the most effective use of resources avoid duplication by separate."

The anonymous Twitter accounts from which the bomb threats originated were suspended, although screen grabs were widely circulated online.

Today, Steve White, of the Police Federation, said the problem was "unpoliceable" and more needed to be done by social media organisations.

He told BBC Breakfast: "The organisations that run these social media platforms probably need to take a long, hard look, they need to take some responsibility.

"It's much like when you go into a shop - there are prevention measures within shops, whether it be security guards or things locked away that you can't get to, which is going to prevent crime, and I think social media sites need to think long and hard about being able to prevent it from happening in the first place.

"Crime has completely changed. Internet crime and e-crime, including the kind of trolling that we've seen this week, is hugely on the rise. Members of the public don't really understand what to do about it as well, so it goes unreported.

"We can't possibly deal with every single comment that someone doesn't like on these social media platforms, but I think the Government's got to take a long, hard look at resources and have got to understand that there is a changing face of crime in this country, and the police service needs to adapt to that and the resources need to be there to do it."

97% Blackfish

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (75) | Rotten (2)

Blackfish is intended to rattle and provoke in the hopes of bringing about change.

"Blackfish" is grim. But then again, so is the plight of these magnificent, intelligent whales.

Informative, earnest, but less than briskly paced.

"Blackfish" makes a compelling case that the cruelty of life in captivity is the cause for a rash of fatal attacks by orcas on their trainers, aggressive behavior that no so-called killer whale ever has exhibited in the wild.

Its ultimate message is clear: Killer whales belong with their families in their natural habitat, not performing for audiences. After listening to this film's many impassioned voices, it's hard to argue.

It not only delivers astonishing, suspenseful footage that makes it a legitimate thriller, but also serves up thoughtful meditations about using wild animals for our own entertainment.

While Blackfish isn't exactly riveting, it is thought-provoking and leaves you with the urge to admire nature in its natural habitat rather than in a contained environment.

A repetitive but still compelling piece of activist filmmaking.

An engrossing look at animal behavior.

It is gripping and thought-provoking.

As enlightening and passionate as the picture is, Cowperthwaite fails to summon the type of comprehensive journalism this type of story deserves.

The one save-the-whales movie to see when you only have time for one.

There aren't too many animal-rights documentaries that could be described as "metal," but Blackfish, one part horror movie and one part nature film, fits the bill and then some.

Cowperthwaite juxtaposes to devastating effect official PR spin with news reports and eye-witness accounts of marine park tragedies.

[An] impressive, often gripping documentary ...

Engrossing when offers alarming CSI-type forensic analysis into the death of a whale trainer [but] the narrow focus on SeaWorld raises more questions that aren't considered.

Through interviews with whale scientists and several former Sea World trainers, [Cowperthwaite] paints a disturbing picture of the profit-minded climate of deceit that prevailed at the company.

Puts 'killer whales' into wildlife and humanitarian perspective while giving you all of the dangerous action sequences you could possible want. Free Willy, it ain't.

Blackfish marries biography, activism and psycho thriller into a pleasing cinematic shape, starting with a single whale and the trainers who worked with him.

Some of the archive footage is exceedingly harrowing, but the case against commercially condoned cruelty is made without sensationalism, and few will be able to watch this without a growing sense of outrage.

Cruelty begets cruelty and whales don't belong in the circus.

5 spectators hurt during power plant implosion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) ? Five spectators were injured Saturday after shrapnel was sent flying at the demolition of a decommissioned steam power plant in California's Central Valley, authorities said.

More than 1,000 people had gathered at 6 a.m. in a nearby parking lot to watch the planned implosion at the plant owned by Pacific Gas and Electric in Bakersfield. After structures on the property came crashing down, a police officer at the scene heard a man screaming for help and saw his leg had been severed, police said.

"It was a piece of shrapnel that came flying out of the explosion and came across and went through a couple of chain link fences, struck him and impacted into a vehicle," said Lt. Scott Tunnicliffe.

The 44-year-old victim might lose his other leg as well due to his injuries, Tunnicliffe said.

Four other spectators were treated for minor injuries, said Kern County Fire engineer Leland Davis. All of the injured spectators were standing beyond a perimeter set up to ensure public safety, Davis said.

Residents of the city about 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles were eager to see the old plant torn down to make way for new development. The plant was decommissioned in 1986 and has been idle ever since.

Pacific Gas and Electric reached an agreement with the city to clean up the property and prepare it for sale. The company hired subcontractors to handle the demolition of the plant's boiler structures and worked with local authorities to set up a safe perimeter 1,000 feet from the site, said Denny Boyles, a company spokesman.

"We are deeply saddened that this happened," Boyles said. "We're looking for answers like everyone else."

Boyles said the boiler structure consisted of two towers measuring 140 feet high that supported four 200,000 gallon tanks.

The incident was first reported by the Bakersfield Californian.

Fuel-saving idle elimination coming to the masses

Autos

GM?s move to make start/stop technology standard on the 2014 Chevy Malibu is the first ripple of the wave of U.S. vehicles that will be outfitted with the technology as automakers search for more ways to improve gas mileage.

It comes with a variety of names, including a start-stop system, idle elimination, idle-stop-go and micro-hybrid.

?Engine stop-start isn?t a brand new technology, but the latest systems benefit from significant advances made in the last few years,? said John Nielsen, AAA?s director of Automotive Engineering and Repair.

?This technology is only going to gain momentum as vehicle manufactures work to meet the more stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards set for 2016.?

The idea behind start/stop is that the engine shuts down when stopped for a period of time, then when engaged it starts up again. Ideally the driver would never notice it, but with past systems drivers have complained about delayed engine response, excessive noise, shuddering and shaking with systems.

More from The Detroit Bureau:?Ousted from Volvo, Jacoby Now Will Run GM's Vast International Empire

Most vehicles with the system have a shut off switch allowing drivers to simply turn it off if they?re unhappy with it. The Malibu will not have a kill switch. It?s the first high volume, non-hybrid to not offer the option of a kill switch.

But with corporate average fuel economy numbers rising in the coming years, companies have been working diligently to refine the technology. This system is expected to improve the Malibu?s fuel economy by 5 percent in city driving.

The first non-hybrid stop-start systems in the U.S. market arrived on high-end vehicles from BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. For the 2013 model year, Jaguar joined the group. It?s not surprising that European and Japanese vehicles would lead the way on bringing the technology to the U.S. as it's estimated that 40 to 45 percent of vehicles in those places use the technology.

While it was once tied to expensive vehicles, the technology is running across all makes and models in 2014. The new BMW 4-Series, 1-Series and 3-Series will have it, as will the Jaguar F-Type, Audi RS7, Ford Fusion and Mazda3. Even trucks will start to see some systems: Dodge is adding stop-start to its V6-powered Ram 1500 pickup for a one mile per gallon fuel economy improvement.

More from The Detroit Bureau:?Ford Admits Delaying Recall, Pays $17 million?Fine

Lux Research, a research and advisory firm providing strategic advice and ongoing intelligence for emerging technologies, predicts that more than 8 million vehicles in North America will be equipped with engine stop-start systems by 2017.

Additionally, IHS Automotive predicts more than 20 percent of vehicles built in North America will have the system by 2017, which is four times higher than the current number of vehicles.

Knowing the public?s perception of the system, GM spent a lot of time to perfect its version before putting it in the Malibu. Besides issues related to noise and vibration, shutting off the engine also impacts the car?s other systems, like lights, air conditioning, etc.

To avoid problems, the Malibu?s stop-start consists mainly of a beefed-up starter and a small auxiliary battery in the trunk. The extra battery is there so drivers won?t notice a momentary dimming of lights or slowing of the air-conditioning fan when the engine stops and starts.

The car uses the same electronic controls as several hybrids GM already builds. Those vehicles are widely considered industry leaders for smooth, unobtrusive operation.

Among other things, the system is programmed so it doesn?t keep cycling on and off in stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic. It also measures the inside and outside temperatures to keep the passenger compartment comfortable.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Jaguar to unveil its first-ever SUV

One reason the technology hasn?t caught on is that it isn?t necessarily cheap. The systems cost a few hundred dollars, but drivers can make it up, according to AAA. If gasoline costs $3.75 per gallon, the owner of a car that normally gets 20 mpg and is driven 12,000 miles per year would save an estimated $167 per year in fuel costs if the vehicle were equipped with an engine stop-start system. In this case, the system would pay for itself in less than two years and offer ongoing savings thereafter.

Another reason for the lack of promotion is that the Environmental Protection Agency, which helps determine mileage ratings for cars and trucks, doesn?t perform an appropriate test to help determine the system?s effectiveness and its impact on mileage ratings.

NASCAR completes TV package with Fox Sports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? NASCAR completed its $8.2 billion television package Thursday by adding two years to its deal with Fox Sports and setting a schedule that gives the network the first 16 Sprint Cup races beginning in 2015.

Fox Sports last year signed a deal for the first 13 Cup races beginning with the 2015 season and the latest deal gives the network three more Cup races to go with the first 14 Nationwide Series races. Fox Sports also extended the contract it had signed last year by two years, so it now runs through 2024 and is the same length as the deal NBC Sports signed last week.

"Fox Sports has been an outstanding partner for NASCAR and we could not be more pleased with the additional commitment they are making to our sport and the fans," NASCAR Chairman Brian France said. "Fox Sports has delivered for our fans a number of innovations that have changed how our sport is presented, and our entire industry has now come to expect excellence from NASCAR on Fox. We believe this new agreement underscores our shared commitment to the fans over the next decade."

NBC Sports paid $4.4 billion for its rights, which begin in 2015, and the Fox Sports deal is now worth $3.8 billion with Thursday's additions. It puts NASCAR at $820 million a year for the length of the 10-year contracts.

Fox Sports will air nine Cup races on its network. The other seven will air on the Fox Sports 1 cable channel.

NBC Sports said last week seven of its 20 races would air on NBC. Coupled with Fox's broadcast races, NASCAR in 2015 will have 16 total races on a network broadcast ? the same number as this year.

The first 14 Nationwide Series race and the entire Truck Series schedule will air on Fox Sports 1, the all-sports network that launches this month. The Truck Series race from Michigan International Speedway on Aug. 17 will be the network's first live event, and NASCAR will be an anchor property for Fox Sports 1.

"Fox Sports is now the exclusive home of NASCAR, the most popular racing series in America, for the first five months of every season through 2024," Fox Sports co-Presidents and COOs Randy Freer and Eric Shanks said in a joint statement.

"The NASCAR Nationwide Series is second only to NASCAR Sprint Cup as the most-watched form of auto racing in the country. Fox Sports now owns the sport every weekend from Speedweeks and the Daytona 500 through June, and we expect these events to provide significant viewership for FOX Sports 1," they said. "The addition of Nationwide to the 1,100 hours of original motorsports programming already scheduled clearly puts FOX Sports at the front of the race to serve motorsports fans in the U.S."

Fox Sports began broadcasting live NASCAR races in 2001, and had the Nationwide Series as part of that original television package.

"We obviously are excited to extend our relationship with Fox Sports with a good balance of racing on the Fox Network," said Steve Herbst, NASCAR vice president of broadcasting and productions. "NASCAR on Fox has been very popular with NASCAR fans everywhere and we believe its expanded schedule will strengthen its relationship with the fans and provide the sport with many opportunities to cross-promote and grow our combined audiences."

Mexico president to present energy reform next week

MEXICO CITY | Thu Aug 1, 2013 6:48pm EDT

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Thursday his sweeping energy reform, which is expected to include constitutional changes to lure private investment and boost output, will be presented to Congress next week.

The energy reform is a key plank of a wider economic overhaul designed to boost growth in Latin America's No. 2 economy to 6 percent a year, create jobs and lower energy costs.

"The government will be presenting my initiative, the initiative of the government, in the coming days, I think next week," Pena Nieto told local radio from a hospital where is recovering from the surgical removal of a benign nodule on his thyroid gland. He gave no details about the bill.

A top lawmaker from Pena Nieto's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, said on Wednesday he expected the reform to be presented on August 7.

Pena Nieto said he hoped the initiative would be debated by Congress during a special legislative period set to begin in mid-August, setting up what is likely to be a heated debate over the future of Mexico's oil riches.

Mexico's conservative National Action Party, or PAN, proposed its own aggressive energy reform on Wednesday, which would dismantle the current ban on concessions and risk-sharing contracts in addition to a broad opening of the electricity sector and the creation of a fund to administer Mexico's oil wealth.

Mexico is the world's 10th biggest producer of crude oil, according to OPEC data, yet output has fallen by a quarter since hitting peak production of 3.4 million barrels per day in 2004.

The country also is a top oil exporter to the United States but has to import nearly half of its gasoline due to a lack of domestic refining capacity.

'SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE'

"I think the required consensus is in place for a meaningful reform to be passed because both the PAN and PRI favor a market- friendly approach," said Gabriel Salinas, a lawyer with Mayer Brown's Latin America energy group.

"But the PRI reform is not expected to be as revolutionary as the PAN's proposal. It will likely come down somewhere in the middle," he said.

Pena Nieto will need PAN backing to secure the required two-thirds majority in Congress to pass the bill. The PAN's proposal raises the likelihood the government will push through a deep reform.

The leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution has made clear it will not support constitutional changes, which it argues are tantamount to privatization. Leftist opponents of any constitutional changes have vowed massive street protests.

Top PRI lawmakers have signaled in recent weeks that the government's energy reform bill will include controversial changes to the constitution.

The PAN's energy proposal seeks to reform Articles 25, 27 and 28 of the constitution, and also would strengthen the country's energy regulatory bodies by making them autonomous.

The proposal would permit other operators to engage in the exploration and production of crude, effectively breaking the monopoly enjoyed by state-run oil and gas company Pemex, Mexico's sole operator under the existing legal framework.

Abuse statements stun NSW church inquiry

AAP

A NSW inquiry has been left in stunned silence by a social worker reading statements from two women sexually assaulted 32 years apart by the same Catholic priest.

The letters spoke of the terror, suffering and sadness that still plagued them, in one case, almost 60 years after the abuse by Hunter Valley Catholic priest Denis McAlinden began.

Maureen O'Hearn, the coordinator of the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic diocese child protection unit's healing and support services, read the statements because the women were unable to.

She said the first letter was written by a 68-year-old woman who was abused for years, from 1954, when she was 10.

The second was written by a 38-year-old who was abused from 1986, when she was 11.

The first woman described McAlinden as "an extremely bad tempered, evil man who was a sexual predator of little girls".

The second woman asked why no one stopped McAlinden, what life may have been like had he not got to her and whether he abused any of her friends.

Ms O'Hearn said she personally had dealings with 28 of McAlinden's victims who were assaulted between 1949 and 1986.

The inquiry, by Commissioner Margaret Cunneen in the Newcastle Supreme Court, is examining how church leaders and police handled child sexual abuse allegations against McAlinden and fellow Hunter Valley priest James Fletcher.

McAlinden died in 2005 and Fletcher died in 2006 serving a jail sentence for a pedophile conviction.

Ms O'Hearn said that as the diocese's healing support coordinator during the past five years she still received complaints from victims of both priests who had come forward from parts of NSW, other Australian states and New Zealand.

The inquiry continues.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in July, the fewest since March. The gains were enough to lower the unemployment rate to a 4? -year low of 7.4 percent, a good sign in an otherwise lackluster report.

The Labor Department said Friday that unemployment fell from 7.6 percent in June as more Americans found jobs.

Still, the economy created 26,000 fewer jobs in May and June than previously estimated. Americans worked fewer hours in July, and their pay dipped. The figures suggest weak economic growth may be making businesses cautious about hiring.

Job growth for the year still remains solid. The economy has created 200,000 jobs a month since January. However, the pace has slowed in the past three months to 175,000.

"A clearly weaker-than-expected report, but one should not overstate it ? the unemployment rate continues to trend down and average job growth of 175,000 will be more than enough to continue to push it lower," Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays Capital, said in a note to clients.

Reaction to the employment report on Wall Street was slightly negative. Stock index futures gave up early gains and were little changed shortly after the report came out. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.64 percent from 2.71 percent as investors bought U.S. government bonds.

The Federal Reserve will pay particularly close attention to the July employment data as it decides whether to scale back its $85 billion a month in bond purchases later this year. Weaker hiring could make the Fed hold off on tapering at its September meeting. However, economists noted that the drop in unemployment, along with steady hiring gains over the past year, could be enough to convince the Fed that the job market has made significant gains.

"While July itself was a bit disappointing, the Fed will be looking at the cumulative improvement," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics. "On that score, the unemployment rate has fallen from 8.1 percent last August, to 7.4 percent this July, which is a significant improvement."

Revisions showed employers added fewer jobs in the previous two months: May's job growth was downgraded to 176,000, below the 195,000 previously estimated; job gains in June were lowered to 188,000, from the 195,000 reported last month.

And the job gains in July were mostly in lower-paying industries, such as retail, hotels and restaurants.

But some were better-paying positions. Manufacturing added 6,000 jobs, driven by strong gains at auto plants. Those were the first job gains at U.S. factories since February. And professional services such as finance, accounting and information technology also increased.

Governments added jobs for the first time since April, driven by the fifth straight month of hiring by local government.

The economy grew at a subpar 1.7 percent annual rate in April-June quarter, the government said Wednesday. While that was an improvement over the previous two quarters, it's still far too weak to rapidly lower unemployment.

Recent data suggest that the economy could strengthen in the second half of the year.

A survey Thursday showed that factories increased production and received a surge of new orders in July, propelling the fastest expansion in more than two years.

The survey, by the Institute for Supply Management, also showed that the housing recovery is spurring more output by lumber companies, furniture makers and appliance manufacturers.

Businesses have ordered more industrial machinery and other equipment for four straight months. Europe's troubled economies are showing signs of recovery, potentially a lift to U.S. exports.

U.S. automakers are reporting their best sales since the recession, a sign that Americans are confident enough in their finances to make large purchases. Car sales rose 14 percent in July from 12 months earlier to 1.3 million.

Healthy sales have encouraged more hiring by Ford Motor Co. The company said last week that it will hire 800 salaried professionals this year, mostly in areas such as information technology, product development and quality control.

Big night for Lochte, Magnussen, US golden girls

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Ryan Lochte feels like himself again. Looks more like himself, too, with that gold medal around his neck.

Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky have felt this way all along. They're piling up so much gold they might need bigger suitcases to get home.

Lochte bounced back from a disappointing start to the world swimming championships, showing he still knows how to touch the wall first with his victory in the 200-meter individual medley Thursday night.

That's worthy of a "Jeah!"

"The first two days I wasn't myself," Lochte said. "I was too worried about the outcome of each race, about finishing first, about my times, and that's not me. I am a swimmer who is really relaxed and goes out there to have fun."

No one is having more fun than a pair of American teenagers.

Franklin, the 18-year-old who recently graduated from high school, is 4 for 4 at the championships after anchoring the U.S. to victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay, matching her gold-medal haul at the London Olympics.

Ledecky, only 16 and getting ready for her junior year of high school, is 3 for 3 after swimming the leadoff leg of the relay. It was her first chance to be part of a U.S. relay team at a major international meet.

"Being part of a team is the most important part about swimming for me," Franklin said. "You want to go out there and race harder than you've ever raced before."

Chances are, there will be more trips to the podium for the stalwarts of the American team.

Lochte has four events remaining and Franklin three. Ledecky will be a big favorite in the 800 free, the event that produced her breakout gold medal at the London Olympics last summer.

"I am not going to think about the outcomes or about winning," said Lochte, who got through a demanding double by posting the second-fastest time in the semifinals of the 200 backstroke behind another American, Olympic gold medalist Tyler Clary. "I just need to have fun."

The U.S. settled for silver and bronze in the men's 100 free ? swimming's glamour event. Australia's James Magnussen rallied on the return lap to edge Jimmy Feigen and reigning Olympic champion Nathan Adrian.

Lochte barely celebrated after his race, letting out a deep breath as he squinted to see his winning time ? 1 minute, 54.98 seconds. Japan's Kosuke Hagino claimed the silver, more than a second behind, and Brazil's Thiago Pereira took bronze.

Lochte, who took a long break after London and cut back his training to work on a reality TV show, hardly looked in peak form while swimming the second leg on the 4x100 free relay team that finished second behind France. That was followed by an even bigger disappointment ? fourth place in the 200 freestyle.

Now, after something of an epiphany, he finally has reason to scream his nonsensical catchphrase. Lochte trailed Pereira at the midway point, but he turned it on during the breaststroke leg and pulled away on the freestyle finish, gliding across the water to win by about a body length, 1.31 ahead of Hagino.

It was the 13th world championship gold of Lochte's career, his 21st medal overall, and his third straight title in the 200 IM ? a race he lost to Michael Phelps at the last Olympics.

"My goggles were fogged up so I couldn't see the rest of the field," Lochte said. "I had no idea if I was winning or in last place. I was just focused on making my turns well, and toward the end I was just praying that I would touch the wall first."

In the relay, Ledecky put the Americans ahead at the start, and Franklin zipped away with a dominant anchor leg to win in 7:45.14.

"Katie led it off like a champ," said Shannon Vreeland, the second of the U.S. swimmers. "With Missy as an anchor, you just have a lot of confidence in the rest of the relay."

The U.S. was slightly behind Australia when Karlee Bispo passed off to Franklin. No problem. She zipped by Alicia Coutts on the final 200 with a leg that was a staggering 1.75 faster than any of the other 31 swimmers in the race.

Australia settled for silver in 7:47.08, while France took the bronze in 7:48.43.

"I don't even care about my split," Franklin said. "I knew I had to bring it home with everything I had, and I was just thinking about these girls the whole time."

When Magnussen saw his name first on the scoreboard, the swimmer known at "The Missile" hopped on the lane rope, flexing his muscles for the crowd while the fans from Down Under shouted "Oi! Oi! Oi!"

He was viewed as a bit of a flop despite a silver medal at the London Games, where he went in as the overwhelming favorite but finished a hundredth of a second behind Adrian.

"It was really emotional," Magnussen said. "That last sort of 15 meters I really used the last 12 months of experiences that I've gone through, and I was really aggressive toward the wall at the end. I'm just stoked that I got there."

Magnussen was nearly a second behind at the turn, but he powered through the water on the return lap to win in 47.71. Feigen also relied on a strong finish to get the silver in 47.82, leaving Adrian to settle for the bronze at 47.84.

Still, the Americans were happy with their showing, especially Feigen. While Magnussen celebrated, a smiling Adrian put his arm around his teammate, who took the bulk of the blame for that U.S. loss in the 4x100 relay. Despite a lack of international experience, Feigen was put on the anchor leg ? and couldn't hold off the French.

Feigen was second again, but this time it felt more like a win.

"I started off a little shaky this whole worlds thing," he said. "I think it's coming together in the end."

In perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, Denmark's Rikke Pedersen set a world record in the semifinals of the women's 200 breaststroke. She touched in 2:19.11, breaking the mark of 2:19.59 set by American Rebecca Soni at the London Games.

Soni is taking the year off but traveled to Barcelona for the championships.

China added to its medal haul with a pair of golds and a silver. Liu Zige won the women's 200 butterfly, edging the crowd favorite, Spain's Mireia Belmonte. Hungary's Katinka Hosszu took the bronze. Cammile Adams of the U.S. was seventh.

The Chinese went 1-2 in the 50 back, an event dropped by Franklin so she could focus on her other events. Zhao Jing won gold, with teammate Fu Yuanhui claiming the silver. The bronze went to Japan's Aya Terakawa. American Rachel Bootsma finished seventh.

NFL to the Eagles: Not So Fast
Chip Kelly's New High-Tempo Offense in Philadelphia May Face a Major Challenge: Referees

By KEVIN CLARK

Associated Press
Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly (in background watching quarterback Michael Vick) aims to run every play as quickly as possible with no huddles and no stoppages in play.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly has been plotting a football revolution since he was hired this winter to turn around the team's fortunes.

His plan is to continue the philosophy he perfected as the coach at Oregon: to run every play as quickly as possible with no huddles and no stoppages in play, all aimed at leaving the defense doubled over in exhaustion. This "up-tempo" strategy, already popular at the college level, looks like it could change the pro game forever. There is just one small problem standing in Kelly's way: referees.

As Kelly mans his first full week of NFL training camp, installing a high-revving Ferrari engine into the Eagles' offense, league insiders say there are exactly zero indications NFL referees will be willing participants in the Kelly era. The NFL, they say, has a long-standing pace at which they do things between plays and the referees "aren't going to change just to accommodate someone's offense," said Mike Pereira, a former NFL vice president of officiating who is now an analyst for Fox Sports.

"We have to make sure teams understand that they don't control the tempo, our officials do," said NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino. "We're going through our normal ball mechanics; we aren't going to rush [unless] it's in the two minute drill."

Blandino said he has talked to every NFL team coaching staff during the off-season to emphasize that there is no forcing the issue?the offense won't be able to snap the ball until the referees signals they're ready.

Kelly declined to comment. An Eagles spokesman also declined to comment.

Blandino said the subject of up-tempo offenses and how they're officiated was a major point of discussion by the NFL's competition committee in recent months. Last season, after what Blandino said was a record for total plays from scrimmage per game, he said the committee felt compelled to "re-emphasize" that NFL rules differ dramatically from college.

At a clinic for NFL officials this off-season, Pereira said he saw league executives taking the next step, drilling the message into the heads of its assembled referees: No matter what, we're going to run at the same pace.

It is easy to see why the NFL might want to tap the brakes on these rampaging offenses. The league has long cherished the somewhat languorous breaks between plays, which are also attractive to broadcasters. There is also a safety concern: The more plays get run, the more tired players become and the more their technique suffers?increasing the risks of injury.

For Kelly, who went 46-7 at Oregon and appeared in a national-championship game, the college game was essentially a racetrack. Since referee guidelines were more lenient, Kelly's teams were consistently able to get officials to work more quickly, setting them up to make lightning-fast snaps. In one game measured by The Wall Street Journal, Kelly's Oregon offense averaged just 23.2 seconds between snaps, a pace 32% faster than the norm for college football.

In the NFL, however, referees are required to change balls when a play dies out of bounds or when there is an incomplete pass. That can add five to 10 seconds between plays. Another source of slowness: The referee who spots the ball in the NFL must be behind the deepest offensive back before the offense can snap the ball.

In at least one collegiate conference, the referee has to only be two steps away from the ball for the offense to snap it. The difference between these approaches can add up to 10 seconds in some instances.

The NFL's policy on substitutions won't help the Eagles, either. If an offensive team substitutes a player, Blandino said, it doesn't matter how quickly that player gets to the line of scrimmage?the defense will also be allowed to make its substitutions. NFL referees, he said, will go so far as standing over the ball to make sure the defenders have time to get in the game.

Pereira, who saw Kelly's offense in action when he briefly oversaw Pac-12 officials two years ago, said Kelly was a coach who lobbied for officials to be more mobile so they could run with the Ducks and get the ball down on the line of scrimmage more quickly, giving the team's center the chance to get a snap off just seconds later. "In the NFL, I don't see him having the juice to persuade crews to work faster," Pereira said. "In fact, I know he doesn't."

To understand the difference between what Kelly wants to bring to the NFL and what the NFL is used to, consider that 12.8% of NFL plays last season were run without a huddle. While that is nearly double what it was five years ago, it doesn't hold a candle to Kelly's Ducks teams. Those squads went without a huddle on 78.5% of plays last year. Eagles receiver Jason Avant said that in his time in the NFL he's come to realize that every NFL team runs the same plays with different names. "But not this offense," he said.

Blandino said that in his meeting with Philadelphia, Kelly didn't show any "overconcern" about these changes. "They had questions about what the parameters were going to be," Blandino said of the Eagles. "It's going to be different from college." Blandino said he didn't sense pushback from teams. He said he wanted every team aware of the mechanics that take place before a snap.

The NFL's version of an up-tempo offense?as tepid as it may be compared with college?has caught on with a handful of teams, most notably the New England Patriots, which ran 74.4 plays per game last season, the most by an NFL team in two decades. By all accounts, the Patriots wish they could go faster. "Tom [Brady] always wants to go faster and faster," said wide receiver Matthew Slater.

But even that pace has stirred up controversy in the NFL. Jets linebacker Calvin Pace called the Patriots' up-tempo offense "borderline illegal" and Jet coaches have publicly complained about the Patriots breaking substitution rules.

"Coach Kelly will not be playing as fast in Philadelphia as he did at Oregon," said Gerald Austin, a longtime NFL referee who now instructs officials and is an analyst for ESPN.

Shazam (for Windows Phone)

Shazam may have lost some of its 'ooh' factor, but it's still devilishly useful if you don't know what that cool song they're playing is. When the app was first released for iPhone, it was a must-download, if for nothing else than its effectiveness as a party trick. The Windows Phone version was updated last June, and while sharing the strengths and limitations of every Shazam app version, it offers some Windows Phone specific capabilities. But Shazam is not without competition on the platform: Not only can you try the similar SoundHound app, but the built-in Bing search feature in Windows Phone has a microphone feature that listens for ambient music and identifies it for you. So let's take Shazam out for a spin and see whether you really need it.

Setup
Shazam is a free download from the Windows Phone store; a premium version, Shazam Encore costs $5.99, but at this point the free version shows no ads like those on iPhone Shazam, so I can't see any reason to get the paid app. I've asked the company to elucidate the advantages of Encore, and will update this when I hear back.

I tested the app on a Nokia Lumia 928. Like so many mobile apps, Shazam's setup wants access to your location, and, though this seems irrelevant for a music app, it does enable a feature that lets you know what people nearby are Shazam-ing. On first run, you have to accept the user agreement; it's the standard boilerplate that the company is creating a profile on you based on your listening habits.?

Interface
Shazam's store description boasts that the app has a "glorious new UI" for Windows Phone 8. At first glance, it's really the most basic interface you can imagine: Just a single big button saying "tag now." As with most windows apps, you swipe sideways to get to different pages. After the Tag Now page, these include pages for your recent tags, chart, and local tags. The app's live tile lets you see album art for your last tag, and you can make another live tile for Tag Now, so you can immediately start song recognition. Finally, among interface goodies is the ability to use the album art of your last-viewed tag as the phone's lock screen background.

Tagging Tunes
I tested the app with increasingly challenging music. Shazam refers to the act of identifying a song "tagging." The app expectedly had no trouble at all tagging the likes of Katy Perry playing at an outdoor Japanese restaurant. Then I headed to Starbucks, where the Art Garfunkel tune playing was no challenge for Shazam, either. The less mass-market Peter Tosh's Rudies Melody was found, too.

But when I headed to an independent coffee shop, things got dicier: The app was unable to identify anything on the hipster baristas' playlist. I held the phone up to the speaker, and I didn't' think the ambient noise was louder than the restaurant and Starbucks, but that might have been a factor in its inability to find the songs. Nor was the app able to identify a song playing on SomaFM, Terre Thaemiz's Hovering Glows or even M-Seven's Contained.

On the classical front, it had more success, identifying the Jasper String Quartet, the wonderful choral group Stile Antico, and even The Harp Consort's Spanish Dances. In all, though, Shazam was far better at identifying music than its nearest competitor, SoundHound, which didn't recognize the harp music or the string quartet.

A former employee of a New York computer company was questioned after his workplace computer search history revealed inquires for "pressure cooker bombs" and "backpacks," but no criminality was determined, the Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement Thursday.?

Authorities have said the bombs used at the Boston Marathon in April, which killed three people and wounded more than 260, involved pressure cookers placed in backpacks.?

The man was questioned after detectives from the department's intelligence unit received a tip from a Long Island-based computer company claiming the recently released employee's computer had suspicious searches, the police said. After interviewing company representatives, they questioned the man at his home where they determined there was no criminality.?

The police issued their statement after receiving numerous media inquiries in response to a?blog post written Thursday by a woman writing under the name Michele Catalano.?

Catalano, who did not return multiple requests for comment, speculated in her post that her husband had been interviewed Wednesday by "six agents from the joint terrorism task force" because of the family's search history on Google.?

She wrote that her husband had researched buying backpacks and she had researched pressure cookers. She writes, also, that her "curious news junkie of a twenty-year-old son" may have read a news story about how instructions to make pressure cooker bombs are available online.?

Her husband answered the officers' questions and her son was asleep when they were at the home, she wrote. She said in the post she does not own a pressure cooker, but does have a rice cooker to make quinoa.?

Catalano took to the Internet on Thursday night, writing in a new blog post that she wrote her original piece without knowing police had been tipped off about her husband's search history at his former job.

Nigeria: Islamic extremists kill 8 in northeast

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Islamic extremists killed eight people in an attack targeting teachers and Muslim clerics in northeast Nigeria, witnesses and the military said Thursday.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Sagir Musa also warned that the Boko Haram terrorist network plans more such killings and "massive attacks" aimed at the northeastern city where their extremist movement was born ? Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

"The Joint Task Force wishes to alert citizens ... of the impending plans by Boko Haram terrorists to carry out massive attacks and bombings in Maiduguri metropolis and other parts of Borno State any moment from now and during the Eid al-Fitr." That celebration on Aug. 8 marks the end of the Ramadan fasting period.

Musa said Tuesday's attack in Bui town, 185 kilometers (115 miles) south of Maiduguri, killed eight civilians and appeared to be the beginning of the planned campaign.

Witness Bala Anjikui said the militants struck at night and targeted teachers, like him, and Islamic clerics.

Indicating a change of tactics, he said the militants used only knives to kill their victims ? apparently to keep the noise of gunshots from attracting soldiers.

Nigeria declared a state of emergency on May 14 to fight an Islamic uprising by militants in the northeast who want to impose Islamic law across a country divided almost equally between the predominantly Muslim north and mainly Christian south.

The insurgency poses the greatest threat in years to security in Africa's biggest oil producer and most populous nation of more than 160 million.

Earlier Thursday, the military congratulated themselves on the arrest of a Nigerian terrorist leader in neighboring Niger, saying it had foiled a plot to regroup and launch more attacks.

A statement Thursday said intelligence agents from both countries had been on the trail of the leader who was arrested Saturday in a border area. It did not identify the leader or his group.

Northeast Nigeria borders Niger and Chad and troops from all three countries have formed a joint force to try to secure hundreds of kilometers of porous borders.

The statement said the arrested leader had fled the military clampdown since the state of emergency was introduced and was recruiting and training militants in Niger to launch terrorist attacks in Nigeria.
