FIRST PERSON | Obama plans to revive the hope of our nation in a stirring speech just after Labor Day to try to get re-elected, er, I mean fix the failing economy and reduce the national unemployment rate, right after he's done vacationing.
Why do today what you could put off until after Labor Day, right?
As a 25 year-old who works from home, raises two kids and attends college in an itty, bitty town called Sterling, Alaska, that nobody Obama even knows has likely ever heard of, I can say with sincerity I doubt his speech is going to change my life.
I don't need a speech. America doesn't need another speech full of empty promises and election-ballot hopes. It needs change -- now. Sadly, a speech with a plan is what we're getting. We can at least hope Obama's speech offers some real ingenuity, creativity and well, hope, to really fix the economic and financial problems facing our people.
I'd like to see Obama present an idea that improves the economy beyond his short term as president. Stimulus packages do help relieve hardship now, but they fall well into this paraphrased old adage: Don't catch a man a fish; rather, teach him to fish. You should prevent the man from starving while he learns to catch his own meal instead.
Sadly, the short-term stimulus efforts being suggested don't come with a long-term solution. In fact, education is one of many fields facing a dam in funding thanks to an effort to reduce the deficit. Not everyone in America is a construction worker; just building the country back up in a literal sense isn't going to remedy a 9 percent unemployment rate. We need to bring jobs back onto homeland soil and stop out-sourcing to save a buck. We need educate people in general and in trades so there are people to do those jobs. We need to stop devaluing our dollar and find value in ourselves.
Having a little experience trying to pay too many bills with not enough money, I can attest that spending more does not balance budgets, unless your spending comes with returns. His speech is also said to appoint a special committee to cut spending to fund these so-called economic stimulus efforts. How much does that committee get paid? Why are we cutting funding for environmental programs working to ensure we have a planet to spend on? Why are we cutting public services like WIC and low-income housing that help the growing populace of poor in America? Why are we cutting funding to farmers and ranchers that produce the food we survive on? Why, when our own people are suffering, are we so worried about defending our borders from an invisible threat? There is no use defending a country, if doing so starves the citizens. Why are government officials getting raises? Why are we paying senators for life, even when they're no longer serving? If you're trying to cut the pork fat off a hog, you don't aim for the vital organs.
I'd like to see Obama suggest funding go to the "we" who are the people, and not just the people who can throw enough money into the fight to be heard.
Why aren't we taxing the wealthy more? Why are we riding the middle class into a dusty remnant of yesteryears? We need to redistribute the wealth. We need a president who can help that happen.
I'd like Obama's speech to include something we haven't heard before. I'd like it to include something he wasn't told to say and puppeteered through. I'd like to hear the truth, because that's all that will ever set us free.

Beyonce and Jay-Z's offspring doesn't even have a name yet, but it was the indisputable breakout star of Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, upstaging everyone, even Katy Perry's win for video of the year.
Perry, who had the most nominations coming into the show with 10, came away with three moonman trophies, including video of the year for the inspirational clip "Firework."
"I feel like I'm doing something right when I sing that song," said Perry, conservatively dressed in a cotton-candy pink jacket, a skirt and something best described as a Green Bay Packers cheesehead decoration.
But the night's big news came from Beyonce, who stole the show before it even began when she announced on the black carpet that after more than three years of marriage, the dazzling couple had produced the ultimate all-star collaboration. Dressed in a loose-fitting, off-the-shoulder red gown, she clutched the baby bump that so many celeb-watchers had been predicting since the two wed.
Later, Beyonce performed "Love on Top," and if Twitter hadn't already spread the news, her outfit gave clues to her impending motherhood; instead of her typical sexy outfits, she dressed in conservative spangled tux ? but still danced around in her signature stilettos.
Beyonce didn't utter a word about the pregnancy, but ended the number by taking off her jacket and rubbing her swollen belly; in the audience, an elated Jay-Z hooted and clapped for his wife as Kanye West hugged him.
In an instant, Beyonce and her soon-to-be child managed to overshadow the night's events. Lady Gaga's much-hyped opening number, during which she performed as a greasy, leather-jacketed male alter-ego during a performance of "You and I," became less interesting. So did the evening's meticulously planned wild moments, from Nicki Minaj's origami-like outfit to a dance-off between the members of Odd Future and Jack Black, Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen.
There was one apparently unscripted moment during Jay-Z's performance with Kanye West of "Otis," off their chart-topping joint album "Watch the Throne." Near the end of the song, someone tried to walk on the stage, but was quickly apprehended by a crew member as a bemused Jay-Z looked on. It was the second time Jay-Z had someone walk on unannounced during an MTV performance; two years ago, it was Lil Mama.
Britney Spears captured the night's first award, for best pop video, and later was honored with an MTV Video Vanguard award for her visual legacy. Lady Gaga, sticking to her gender-switch shtick, leered at Spears as she paid tribute to her.
"She's a pop music legend, and the industry would not be the same without her," Gaga said. "I used to hang pictures of her on my wall and touch myself when I was in bed."
Later, Gaga fished for a kiss, but as Spears leaned in, she quickly pulled back, reminding viewers, "I've done that before."
The show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles had no official host, though comedian Kevin Hart delivered an opening monologue and was featured in a series of vignettes during the show.
Adele had perhaps the highlight of the night as the seven-time nominee delivered a powerfully understated performance of "Someone Like You," off her top-selling "21" album.
Chris Brown also wowed with an aerial number, soaring above the crowd in between high-stepping choreography.
Russell Brand provided the evening's rare poignant moment during a tribute to his late friend, Amy Winehouse, who died a month ago after struggling for years with drug and alcohol abuse. Brand urged people to remember the 27-year-old for her music, and urged others suffering to get help.
"A lot of people just get the disease, not many people get the incredible talent that Amy was blessed with," said Brand, who successfully battled drug addiction himself. "Let's remember there is a solution ... that solution is available."
Tony Bennett, who joined Winehouse in what is believed to be her last song on his upcoming "Duets II" album, showed the audience a clip of the pair singing "Body and Soul."
Moments later, Bruno Mars sang one of her hits, "Valerie," but closed the song out with the refrain, "Amy, we'll miss you baby," as a somber-faced audience looked on.

"We have expressed to Prime Minister Jibril the best wishes of the Italian people for the very tough work that awaits him and his collaborators to transform Libya into a real democracy," Berlusconi said.
At the end of the joint press conference, Berlusconi shook Jibril's hand firmly, looking him straight in the eye, and guided him outside.

"After having kissed a hand dripping with blood, now he should kiss the hand representing those whose blood was shed," lawmaker Italo Bocchino said.
The two countries share a long and complicated history.
Italy was Libya's colonial ruler in fascist times and went on to develop into Libya's largest trading partner as old resentments matured into mutually beneficial economic ties ? worth euro11 billion before trade was halted in February with the outbreak of civil war.
Italy's islands are just a few hundred kilometers (miles) from Libya's shores. Rome has relied on Gadhafi to keep away waves of boat people escaping conflict or poverty, and is dependent on the Arab country's oil.

None of that got into the way of the blossoming relationship between Berlusconi and Gadhafi. But after initial hesitation, Berlusconi ? under pressure from allies ? was drawn into the Libya conflict and reversed his earlier refusal to take part in NATO bombing raids.
Berlusconi was clearly uncomfortable with the move. During a wide-ranging conversations with foreign journalists in April, he conceded that Italy's involvement with the NATO operations was difficult for him.
"I accepted despite the personal difficulties that this decision entailed for me," Berlusconi said. "At one point I even thought it was my duty to resign," he said, adding that "everybody asked me not to."
Berlusconi was certainly not alone in seeing the benefits of rapprochement with the oil-rich nation after Gadhafi overcame his pariah status by giving up the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and renouncing support for terrorism.
Others included former British prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. France's Nicolas Sarkozy, one of the first to take military action this spring, gave Gadhafi a royal welcome in Paris in December 2007, the first such visit since Gadhafi's falling out with the West in the 1980s.
Gadhafi stayed at the official guest residence near the presidential Elysee Palace, pitching a Bedouin tent in the elegant gardens. His visit clinched contracts worth billions of dollars for French business. Government officials defended the warm welcome for Gadhafi as a way to encourage states that show signs of moving away from terrorism.
While Sarkozy welcomed him into the Elysee Palace, dozens of lawmakers boycotted a session at the National Assembly parliament building.
This year, Sarkozy fiercely and swiftly turned against Gadhafi. France was the first country to recognize the opposition government and the first to fire airstrikes against Gadhafi's forces.
Berlusconi makes personal contacts a hallmark of his diplomacy, including hosting Russian leader Vladimir Putin at his villa on Sardinia's posh coast. During Gadhafi's sojourn in Rome last summer, some 200 aspiring models were recruited for a soiree in which the Libyan lectured them on Islam and distribute copies of the Quran.
Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Tuesday that he expects the rebels to honor all business contracts with Italian firms.
"They have committed to honor all of the contracts, also those of Italian businesses, that were signed by Libya. They weren't contracts with Gadhafi," Frattini told RAI state radio.

WASHINGTON ? Vaccines can cause certain side effects but serious ones appear very rare ? and there's no link with autism and Type 1 diabetes, the Institute of Medicine says in the first comprehensive safety review in 17 years.
The report released Thursday isn't aimed at nervous parents. And the side effects it lists as proven are some that doctors long have known about, such as fever-caused seizures and occasional brain inflammation.
Instead, the review comes at the request of the government's Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, which as the name implies, pays damages to people who are injured by vaccines. Federal law requires this type of independent review as officials update side effects on that list to be sure they agree with the latest science.
"Vaccines are important tools in preventing serious infectious disease across the lifespan, from infancy through adulthood. All health care interventions, however, carry the possibility of risk and vaccines are no exception," said pediatrician and bioethicist Dr. Ellen Wright Clayton of Vanderbilt University, who chaired the institute panel.
Still, the report stresses that vaccines generally are safe, and it may help doctors address worries from a small but vocal anti-vaccine movement. Some vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles, are on the rise.
"I am hopeful that it will allay some people's concerns," Clayton said.
The review echoed numerous other scientific reports that dismiss an autism link.
But it found convincing evidence of 14 side effects:
_Fever-triggered seizures, which seldom cause long-term consequences, from the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine.
_MMR also can cause a rare form of brain inflammation in some people with immune problems.
_The varicella vaccine against chickenpox sometimes triggers that viral infection, resulting in widespread chickenpox or a painful relative called shingles. It also occasionally can lead to pneumonia, hepatitis or meningitis.
_Six vaccines ? MMR and the chickenpox, hepatitis B, meningococcal and tetanus-containing vaccines ? can cause severe allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis.
_Vaccines in general sometimes trigger fainting or a type of shoulder inflammation.
There's suggestive evidence but not proof of a few other side effects, including anaphylaxis from the human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine and short-term joint pain in some women and children from the MMR vaccine.
On the other hand, the report cleared flu shots of blame for two long-suspected side effects: Bell's palsy and worsening of asthma.
That doesn't mean there aren't other side effects ? the review couldn't find enough evidence to decide about more than 100 other possibilities. Some vaccines are just too new to link to something really rare. Another example: Flu shots have long come with a caution about rare, paralyzing Guillain-Barre syndrome, but Clayton said research hasn't settled if that's a coincidence since the disorder is more common during the winter.
The Health Resources and Services Administration, which runs the vaccine compensation program, is reviewing the report but said it's too early to predict if it will prompt changes to the injury list.

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? A beleaguered Muammar Gaddafi vowed on Wednesday to fight on to death or victory after rebels forced him to abandon his Tripoli stronghold in what appeared to be a decisive blow against the Libyan leader's 42-year rule.
Gleeful rebels ransacked Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya bastion, seizing weapons and smashing symbols of a government whose demise will transform Libya and send a warning to other Arab autocrats facing popular uprisings.
Gaddafi said his withdrawal from his headquarters in the heart of the capital was a tactical move after it had been hit by 64 NATO air strikes and he vowed "martyrdom" or victory in his fight against the alliance.
He was speaking to a Tripoli radio station and his whereabouts after leaving the compound remain a mystery.
As night fell on Tuesday after a day in which rebels overran Tripoli, meeting little resistance with few casualties, heavy fighting was reported in a southern desert city, Sabha, that rebels forecast would be Gaddafi loyalists' last redoubt.
Forces loyal to Gaddafi were shelling the towns of Zuara and Ajelat, west of Tripoli, Al-Arabiya television reported.
In Tripoli itself, Reuters correspondents said there still appeared to be some hostile fire around the city centre as darkness descended and looting broke out.
Omar al-Ghirani, a spokesman for the rebels, said loyalist forces had fired seven Grad missiles at residential areas of the capital, causing people to flee their homes in panic.
He told Reuters Gaddafi forces had also fired mortar rounds in the area of the Tripoli airport.

The continued shooting suggested the six-month popular insurgency against Gaddafi, a maverick Arab nationalist who defied the West and kept an iron hand on his oil-exporting, country for four decades, had not completely triumphed yet.
A spokesman for Gaddafi said the Libyan leader was ready to resist the rebels for months, or even years.
"We will turn Libya into a volcano of lava and fire under the feet of the invaders and their treacherous agents," Moussa Ibrahim said, speaking by telephone to satellite news channels.
Rebel leaders would not enjoy peace if they carried out plans to move to Tripoli from their headquarters in the eastern city of Benghazi, he said.
But Gaddafi was already history in the eyes of the rebels and their political leaders planned high-level talks in Qatar on Wednesday with envoys of the United States, Britain, France, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates on the way ahead.
Another meeting was scheduled for Thursday in Istanbul.
"It's over! Gaddafi is finished!" yelled a fighter over a din of celebratory gunfire across the Bab al-Aziziya compound, Gaddafi's sprawling citadel of power in the Libyan capital.
KEEP REVOLUTION CLEAN, REBEL LEADER SAYS
Opinion was divided about Gaddafi's whereabouts. Colonel Ahmed Bani told Al-Arabiya TV that rebels believed Gaddafi was probably holed up in one of many hideouts in Tripoli. "It will take a long time to find him," he said.
Rebel National Council chief Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who was until February a loyal minister of Gaddafi, cautioned: "It is too early to say that the battle of Tripoli is over. That won't happen until Gaddafi and his sons are captured."
Mahmoud Jibril, head of the rebel government, promised a transition toward a democracy for all Libyans. "The whole world is looking at Libya," he said, warning against summary justice.
"We must not sully the final page of the revolution."
Jibril said they had formed a new body including field commanders from a variety of local revolutionary groups to coordinate security. There is a long history of friction among villages and tribes, Arabs and ethnic Berbers, and between the east and west of a state formed as an Italian colony in 1934.
Western powers who backed the revolt with air power held off from pronouncing victory although they are keen for a swift return to order, given fears that ethnic and tribal divisions among the insurgents could degenerate into the kind of anarchy that would thwart hopes of Libya resuming oil exports.
But the fall of Gaddafi, with the arresting images on Arab satellite TV of rebels stomping through his inner sanctum and laying waste to the props of his long unaccountable domination, could be a shot in the arm for other revolts in the Arab world.
It could underline that entrenched authoritarian leaders are no longer invincible, particularly in Syria where popular unrest has widened despite ever fiercer military crackdowns by President Bashar al-Assad.
TRASHING GADDAFI
At the Bab al-Aziziya, long a no-go area, armed men broke up a gilded statue of Gaddafi, kicking its face. Others ripped up his portrait or climbed on a monument depicting a clenched fist, which Gaddafi erected after a U.S. air strike in 1986.
Another rebel sported a heavily braided, peaked military cap of a kind favoured by the colonel, who seized power in 1969. He said he had taken the hat from Gaddafi's bedroom.
"House to house! Room to room!" chanted some men at Bab al-Aziziya, calling for a search of its bunkers and tunnels in a mocking echo of the words Gaddafi used six months ago when he vowed to crush the early stirrings of the Arab Spring revolt.
Abdel Hakim Belhadj, a rebel commander, said he did not know where Gaddafi or his sons were. "They ran like rats."
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "We're in the death throes of this regime ... But it's still a very difficult and dangerous time. It's not over yet."
On Tuesday night, youths danced in Tripoli's Green Square, another Gaddafi showpiece arena. They waved the red, green and black flag of the rebels to the sound of gunfire, though most of the city's 2 million people prudently stayed indoors.
One man greeted the fall of a third autocrat in the Arab Spring and forecast others would share their fate: "1. Tunisia 2. Egypt 3. Libya ? Syria ? Yemen," his sign read.
Rebel officials, who said they hoped to move from Benghazi in the east to the capital this week, spoke of trying Gaddafi in Libya rather than sending him to The Hague, where he and two others have been indicted by the International Criminal Court.
The Russian head of the International Chess Federation, who had visited Tripoli in June, told Reuters Gaddafi called him on Tuesday to say he would stay in Tripoli and "fight to the end".
But he had few places to make a stand. His home town of Sirte, on the Mediterranean coast between Tripoli and rebel Benghazi, was expected to welcome rebel forces shortly, Abdel-Jalil said. But Jibril spoke of a need still to "liberate" southern desert areas such as Sabha and of fighting there.
"It really looks like it's pretty much over," said David Hartwell, a Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's in London.
In the east of the country, government troops were pulling out of areas that are key to oil production, rebels said.
The U.S. State Department, in a signal of the kind of activity likely to gather pace in diplomatic meetings over the coming days, said it was seeking the immediate release of up to $1.5 billion of frozen Libyan government assets to the rebels.

Kiffin, facing possible sanctions, appeared before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in June as part of a broader hearing into Tennessee's athletic department.
The NCAA is expected to announce its ruling in the case Wednesday.
Citing "multiple sources," the Knoxville News Sentinel reported Tuesday on its website that, "The two major violations levied against the football program were found to be secondary violations and no further penalties were levied against the UT program, former coach Lane Kiffin or former assistant David Reaves."
Kiffin, whose Trojans practiced Tuesday morning, could not be reached for comment after the News Sentinel posted its report in the afternoon. USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said he had not been notified by the NCAA of a pending release of its report.
The NCAA had alleged that Tennessee football staff members made 16 impermissible phone calls to recruits from Jan. 3 to Jan. 9, 2010 ? calls that were made a month after the staff was informed they were impermissible.
Kiffin also was accused of allowing a recruiting intern to make impermissible off-campus contact with high school staff members after Tennessee's director of football operations told him that the intern was not permitted to enter a high school's property while accompanying a coach on a recruiting trip.
If Kiffin were penalized, the punishments could include limits on his recruiting at USC and, possibly, suspension from games.
Scroggins returns
Quarterback Jesse Scroggins attended practice for the first time since last week, when he was removed from the 105-player training camp roster after surgery on his right hand.
Scroggins, outfitted with a new cast, was not in uniform. He can attend practices and meetings because rosters are expanded once classes start.
"To me it made sense," he said of his removal from the roster. "They needed to bring in an extra [defensive back] so I was like, 'OK, I understand.' Coach Kiffin told me, 'Stay in the film room, do what you can do and I'll see you next week.' "
Scroggins, a redshirt freshman, said he was injured when defensive lineman George Uko, his roommate, inadvertently hit his throwing hand during the Trojans' second scrimmage.
"I told him, 'Thanks. Thanks a lot,' " Scroggins said, laughing. "We're good friends."

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuela condemned a U.S. State Department report Friday for saying the South American country's government is not fully cooperating in anti-terrorism efforts.
Venezuela's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the U.S. report is plagued with false information and "veiled threats."
The report, which was released Thursday, expresses concern about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's close ties with Iran. It also accuses his government of taking no action against Venezuelan government and military officials that the U.S. has accused of links to Colombian rebels.
In strongly rejecting the accusations, Venezuela said the U.S. government has no "moral authority" to judge other countries on such issues, saying it has committed "massacres of civilians in its numerous fronts of war."
The U.S. State Department "tends to classify as terrorists or accommodating toward terrorism those governments and political organizations that don't yield to its imperial intentions of global domination," the Foreign Ministry said.
It said the Venezuelan government will continue to "form alliances with the countries of its choosing."
Venezuela reiterated its criticisms of U.S. authorities for not turning over former CIA operative Luis Posada Carriles, who is wanted in Venezuela on charges of planning the 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 people. It said the U.S. has provided "refuge and protection" to Posada.
There have been long-standing tensions between the U.S. and Venezuelan governments, even as the South American country has remained a major oil supplier to the United States.
Relations grew particularly strained after the State Department in May imposed sanctions on the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, saying it had shipped fuel to Iran.
The U.S. Embassy in Caracas has been without an ambassador since July 2010. Chavez rejected the U.S. nominee for ambassador, Larry Palmer, accusing him of making disrespectful remarks about Venezuela's government. That led Washington to respond in December by revoking the visa of the Venezuelan ambassador.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? The masked man who locked a fake bomb to the neck of an Australian millionaire's teenage daughter did not look like your ordinary violent criminal. The gray-haired attacker wielded a baseball bat but wore beige trousers and a light-colored dress shirt, rolled up at the elbows.
Along with demands for money, he left behind an email address that appears to refer to a 45-year-old novel about a ruthless businessman in 19th-century Asia.
That address helped lead police all the way from the wealthy Sydney suburb where the attack occurred to a well-heeled Louisville suburb where they arrested an investment banker, Paul Douglas Peters, at his ex-wife's home on Monday.
Peters once worked for a company with ties to the victim's family, according to federal court documents released Tuesday that also reveal more details about the ordeal 18-year-old Madeleine Pulver endured earlier this month.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Dave Whalin on Tuesday ordered Peters jailed pending an extradition hearing Oct. 14 in Louisville. Peters faces charges in Australia that include kidnapping and breaking and entering.
An arrest complaint filed in court does not elaborate on the 50-year-old's business ties.
The document says Pulver was studying for her high school exams Aug. 3 in her bedroom when she saw the intruder walk in carrying a black aluminum baseball bat and wearing a striped, multicolored balaclava. "Sit down and no one needs to get hurt," he told her.
Pulver sat on her bed and the intruder placed the bat and a backpack next to her. She noticed he was holding a black box. He forced the box against her throat and looped a device similar to a bike chain around her neck.
The man locked the box around her neck and placed a lanyard and a plastic document sleeve around her neck. It contained a hand-written note with demands, the email address and a USB digital storage device.
"Count to 200," he said as he left, taking the bat and the backpack with him. "... I'll be back ... if you move I can see you I'll be right here," she told authorities, according to the complaint.
After a few minutes Pulver texted her mother, and soon after that she called her father. After telling both of them to call police, she saw that the attacker's note warned not to do that.
Pulver was "crying and hysterical" when bomb technicians, negotiators and detectives rushed to the scene, but she eventually calmed down, the complaint said.
Neighboring homes were evacuated, streets were closed and medical and fire crews waited nearby. Pulver spent 10 hours chained to the device, which was removed after bomb technicians determined it did not contain explosives.
The note around Pulver's neck said the fake bomb contained "powerful new technology plastic explosives" and was booby trapped. Details for delivering "a Defined Sum" would be sent "once you acknowledge and confirm receipt of this message," it said. The USB device contained the same note.

Australian authorities determined that the email account was established May 30 from an Internet Protocol address linked to a Chicago airport. Travel documents obtained from immigration authorities showed that Peters had been at the airport that day.
The email account was accessed three times on the afternoon of Aug. 3, beginning almost two hours after the hoax device was placed around the teenager's neck, the complaint said.
The first access took place at 4:09 p.m. from an IP address registered to a library in Kincumber, about a 50-mile (80-kilometer) drive from the girl's home in Mosman. The account was accessed twice more before 6 p.m. from an IP address registered to a video store a few miles from the library.
Surveillance cameras at the library and at a liquor store next to the video store recorded a man matching Peters' description around that time, the complaint said. A video store employee said a "well-dressed" man came in twice to use one of the store's Internet computers because he was "waiting for an email."
Records from two stores show that Peters bought a black baseball bat, and a USB device and lanyard identical to those left with Pulver, in July, the complaint said.
The arrest complaint said Peters left Australia on a one-way flight from Sydney to Chicago on Aug. 8 and then flew to Kentucky the next day. Peters is an Australian citizen who has lived in the U.S., including Kentucky.
On Aug. 11, a Louisville FBI agent spotted Peters in the backyard of his ex-wife's house, the complaint said.
The FBI arrested Peters without incident Monday in the normally tranquil subdivision of Heather Green near La Grange, about 30 miles northeast of Louisville. Neighbors were taken aback at the sight of armed SWAT members descending on their neighborhood.
"We had guys with machine guns in our backyard," a neighbor who refused to give his name told The Associated Press.
He and his wife estimated that Peters had probably spent about six months out of the last two years at the house. They didn't know him or his ex-wife very well but said that they were both congenial.
Pulver and her family were relieved to hear of the arrest. Her father, William Pulver, described her as "a bright, happy young woman who for reasons we still don't understand had her life turned upside down going through this dreadful experience."
William Pulver was once the president and CEO of NetRankings, a pioneer in tracking online exposure and readership for companies advertising online. He left after the company was sold to ratings giant Nielsen in 2007. He is now the chief executive of Appen Butler Hill, a company that provides language and voice-recognition software and services.
Peters was bound at the legs when he made a brief court appearance Tuesday, then bound at the wrists after the hearing ended.
He showed no emotion, spoke quietly to his attorney and glanced briefly at his ex-wife, Debra, who sat alone in the front row, weeping quietly.
His attorney, Scott Cox, said Peters will contest the charges in Australia, but he did not know whether his client will fight extradition.
Authorities said Peters has been involved in various businesses, but they would not elaborate. Cox said Peters is an attorney who makes his living as an investment banker in Australia and owns his own company.
Peters and his ex-wife divorced in 2007 and have three school-age children together, Cox said. He didn't know how long they were married.
"She's in shock," Cox said of Debra Peters. "This is hard on her and her children. ... She's not involved in any respect to this, at all."
