Anna and Ken Boynton of Message Glue are communication consultants who create content, produce creative, and coach human executives to be better presenters. They know the onstage world well, having written and performed custom music, videos, presentations and comedy for too many companies to count. They?ve traveled the world acting, singing, and/or directing, licensed original music to films and TV, recorded 5 CD?s of original music, and directed 2 award-winning short films (one featured at Sundance). They?ve won awards for acting (Jeff Award), writing lyrics (Emmy), announcing (Mercury), acting for corporate video (Telly), & writing for corporate communications (Golden Quill).

What are you working on right now?

We just finished a presentation for Microsoft?s global sales meeting, and are now working on a presentation for an author whose book is just released. We?re crafting and coaching a company looking for funding, and getting the word out with some web media for a startup. Also, coaching speakers for a TEDx event and about to launch a Speaking Basics workshop to help people of all skill levels feel more at ease speaking in front of others.

Oh, and writing songs with my daughter and picking some tunes for our band.

What does your typical day look like?

Ken: Up early. Yoga. Check the email. Write. Record audio or schedule production. Media creation (videos and slides). Dog walking. Wine drinking. Guitar playing.

Anna:? Dog walking. At the computer.? Meetings and meetings.? Yoga.? Dinner with family and often friends.? Some excellent Sci-Fi.? Listening to guitar.

3 trends that excite you?

K: Social media, simplifying messages and the slow-but-steady demise of ?corporate speak.?

A: A rediscovery of community.? The awareness of the importance of a balance of health and work.? Leopard print.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Every idea can be presented in a compelling way. Humans have responded to great stories since the dawn of time, and every idea leads to a story that has a human, emotional element that can be illuminated. We find ?em and illuminate ?em.

What inspires you?

Ken: My wife. My daughter. Great writing. A great song.

Anna: My husband.? My family.? Dogs.? Anyone living in the fullness and vibrancy of their life?s force.

What is one mistake you?ve made, and what did you learn from it?

Ken: Giving untrustworthy people the benefit of the doubt. I?ve learned that no matter how much potential I see in someone, they may not see it in themselves.

Anna:? Not trusting my gut.? When I haven?t listened to that, I?ve ended up in situations that take too much energy and time to unravel.

What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?

Ken: If you connect emotionally with an audience, they will trust you and follow you.

Anna: Breathe.

What do you read every day, and why?

Ken: Too much email. The New Yorker. And Rolling Stone. The latter two remind me that art goes on and writing can take its time. Also, the cartoons keep me sane.

Anna: The New Yorker.? Cesar Milan newsletter.? The New Yorker, which stimulates my intellect and takes me into experiences I wouldn?t have thought of otherwise.? Much of what Cesar writes about not only pertains to dogs, but also applies to people.? Most of the messages about being calm, assertive, focused, living in the moment?these are all essential to being a good leader, a good speaker and a good human.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read, and why?

Lead From the Heart by Mark C. Crowley. It proves that we all thrive when we?re respected and encouraged.

What is your favorite gadget, app or piece of software that helps you every day?

Ken: My macbook pro-with Keynote, Microsoft Word (and Final Draft when I write for video).

Anna: The iPad.

Who would you love to see interviewed on IdeaMensch?

Mark C. Crowley, author of Lead From The Heart
Megan Gaiser, Chief Strategic Creative Officer for Her Interactive

What?s the most exciting thing about your work?

When we help someone connect their messages and delivery to the very same internal qualities and talents that make that person unique, it?s magical.

After 2 near-death experiences, what have you learned?

Ken: To make every second count, and that nothing is really worth getting too stressed about.

Anna: And the time is now, don?t wait to do something you love. Do it now.? Ask yourself, ?What am I waiting for??

How To ... - Ministry Accounting | accounting information for business

Wages and salaries are often one of the largest expenses of a businesses, and with numerous ways employees could defraud the company and steal money, such as setting up bogus employees on the payroll and extracting ?extra salary?, it is an area that needs to be tightly controlled by the directors.

So how are wages recorded? The first part of any payroll system is the recording of hours worked in order to calculate each of the employees? gross salary.? Where the employees work a fixed hour week this should not cause too many problems, however it is still important to ensure that each employee actually worked the contracted amount of hours for that pay period. If the employees work a variable amount of hours per week then time sheets are even more important. In addition, each time sheet should be signed off by a manager or director as evidence the employee worked the amount of hours claimed. This is an important control that should be used in every business since you, as the business owner, don?t want to be paying employees for work that they have not actually done.

Manual time sheets are not only a pain to complete for the employee but they can be difficult to administer. The legibility of some employees? handwriting may be in question and there is the chance that numbers could be misread by the payroll department which could lead to all sorts of problems and adjustments. A good way around this is to use a computerised system or a clocking in and clocking out machine. The clocking in and clocking out machine is possibly the best way to ensure the hours on each time sheet or clock card are correct since it is stamped by the machine, but employees may think they are not trusted with such a strict system. Whilst a clocking in machine will verify the employees are on site it cannot verify they are actually working, therefore managers and supervisors are still required whether the clocking in machine is used or not.

At the end of each pay period the time sheets need to be collated, authorised as accurate by the manager and then sent to the payroll department for processing. Processing involves inputting all the data to calculate the gross pay each employee should receive. Whilst payroll can be calculated manually it is a laborious task that is prone to human error, which may result in many issues and problems that need to be sorted out, which will end up costing the business money. The best way to process the payroll is to use a computerised program, and whilst there are many companies that sell these programs they are all the same.

These payroll systems calculate the gross salary for each employee, the amount of tax and national insurance due for each employee and the employer?s national insurance contribution. In addition there will be an option to print off numerous reports for management control purposes. The key thing to remember is that the data will only be as good as the person who enters it on to the payroll system, therefore the payroll department employees needs proper training in both timesheet management and the payroll system to ensure the payroll is correct. Once the payroll has been processed and all the reports run it is important to pass them to a director for authorisation. The director should review the payroll and make sure it looks reasonable. If there are any questions or apparent discrepancies, such as new employees appearing, large bonus payments, excessive overtime hours etc. the director should investigate and discover why and that the extra salary is bonafide before signing the payroll and authorising it for payment.

If the company does not have the appropriate staff to process the payroll it can be outsourced to a third party payroll bureau. These are organisation that specialise in processing the payroll of several companies. They are advantageous in that the staff are highly trained and very experienced in processing, however there are disadvantages in that the company loses control over the payroll, the employees of the bureau don?t know the business and will purely process the data provided therefore it needs to be fully accurate with no discrepancies (the reasonableness check is lost) and since the payroll is a sensitive area you, as the business owner, may not want a third party knowing about your company?s payroll although there will be confidentiality agreements in place.

Recording hours, processing the payroll and ensuring that the employees are paid is only a small part of the overall payroll system of a company. With wages and salaries being such a large expense of the company it is important to ensure the payroll costs are properly included in the financial records of the company for management purposes. The best way to control the wages is by way of a wages and salary control account.

So how do the accounts department ensure that wages and salaries are accurately recorded in the financial accounting system? There are some payroll packages that can link up to accounting packages and automatically post all the entries to the accounting system as the payroll is prepared. Whilst these appear to be a great idea, and they are when they work properly, they are not fool proof and could lead to all manner of problems, especially when there are errors in processing the payroll that need to be subsequently corrected. Because of this it is advisable to keep the payroll processing system and the accounts system totally independent and manually post the payroll to the accounting system.

The wages and salary reports need to be obtained from the payroll department. From these reports the gross wages and employer?s national insurance contributions need to be debited to the profit and loss account with the subsequent credit being posted to the wages control account, this posting should take place before the wages are paid over. When the net wages are paid to the employees the wages control account is debited and the bank is credited. When the tax and national insurance is paid over to the tax authorities the wages control account is debited and the bank is credited.

Maintaining a control account may appear a longwinded way that duplicates postings, however it is the best method of keeping control of the wages. Whilst there will be timing differences between recording the transaction and payment they should always net off to zero, so if they don?t there is a problem somewhere along the line and this can be identified and rectified before it gets too out of control.

In order to reduce the chance of fraud in the wages system each company should try and ensure there is a segregation of duties, i.e. the payroll department and the accounts department consist of different employees. This situation is not always possible in small businesses and the accounts department may process the payroll, authorise the bank to pay the employees and post the payroll to the financial accounts. In these situations it is important that the directors maintain close supervision over the whole process and that they review and authorise at every appropriate stage to prevent fraud and errors.

Reno reels from 3 deadly tragedies in months

Dr. Michael Morkin was in the emergency room when word came that as many as 80 patients could be on their way to Reno hospitals from a fiery Amtrak crash in the Nevada desert. He was there the day after Labor Day when a man with an assault rifle shot a dozen people at a pancake restaurant in nearby Carson City. Then, last week, a nurse poked his head into the room and said, "Mike, we have mass casualties."

"What is it this time?" asked Morkin, the chief emergency room surgeon.

Such disbelief was present across northern Nevada last week after the air race crash that killed at least 11 people ? the third deadly tragedy to strike the Reno area in recent months. The episodes have inflicted a severe emotional toll on people, but also instilled a greater sense of community as people came together in the face of crisis.

Minutes after the plane crashed at the air races, volunteers rushed out of the grandstands to tend to those maimed on the tarmac or to carry stretchers to the waiting air ambulances. Paramedics made tourniquets out of streamers from the box seat railings and from belts offered up by healthy spectators. Residents offered up homes and rides to the hospital to grieving victims. Donors stood in lines that snaked outside the building to give blood.

"Literally thousands of people we have never met have contacted us and we want them to understand we appreciate that," said Jim Elvin of Atlanta, who lost his mother but whose father, two brothers and sister-in-law survived the crash and are faring well. "We are confident that is part of the reason that all four of them are still here with us."

He also said that "complete strangers have been offering us whatever we need ? rides, a place to stay in their home. It's incredible."

Five people were killed and 30 injured in the Amtrak crash in June and five more died at the IHOP in Carson City on Sept. 6, including three members of the National Guard. The timing of the military killings added another layer of grief ? memorial services were held the following Sunday on the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

But neither incident turned into the large-scale disaster that Morkin faced at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 16.

"As the calls starting coming in it was clear it was going to be a legitimate mass casualty incident, not like Amtrak where they said we could get 80 but ended up getting only five or six," Morkin said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Over the next three and a half hours, nearly 70 seriously injured spectators were rushed to three hospitals in Reno and Sparks ? more than two dozen of them through the doors at Renown Regional Medical Center. Within two days, the death toll had grown to 11, including the pilot. The same hospital treated National Guard members after the IHOP shooting.

But while images of the horror overtook the annual celebration of aviation and ran over and over on television and the Internet, the real story behind the scenes was how many lives were saved and emotionally scarred family members and friends were comforted, according to doctors, patients, volunteers and others who saw the events unfold.

"Thanks to the quick, selfless actions of both trained medical personnel as well as complete strangers, lives were saved that evening," said Allen Martin Elvin, another member of the Elvin family that lost Cherie Elvin, 71, Lenexa, Kan.

"And no one is looking for any recognition," added Mike Houghton, director of the Reno Air Races Association. "It's about helping each other, that's what it is all about right now."

Hundreds were expected to attend a public memorial service on Sunday at a city park where city officials also planned to plant a tree and dedicate to the victims.

'Out of left field'
By all accounts, each of the incidents could have been worse. The passenger cars on the Amtrak train could have derailed. The IHOP shooter had piles of ammunition and more guns waiting in his van at the time he shot himself. The P-51 Mustang came within a stone's throw from taking out dozens and possibly hundreds more victims in the grandstand. And there was no fireball from the crash.

Morkin said one of the surgeons in his emergency room was watching a video of the crash on the Internet as the first wave of patients started to arrive. He said the hospital's response was made easier by the fact that there was no fireball.

"What really helped and was a pleasant surprise is there were no burn victims," he said. "Burn patients are incredibly resource intensive. Just one or two severely burned patients really grind your ability to function and can shut an emergency room down."

The tragedy in Carson City is two weeks further removed, but Sgt. First Class Erick Studenicka said people in Carson City are "still getting used to dealing with it." Carson City is 30 miles away from Reno, but many residents commute to work from one town to the other.

Just weeks before the Sept. 6 shooting, Studenicka had completed the research he needed to write a 10-year retrospective for a base publication about what had happened to the local unit since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We had only lost three in the war in the last 10 years and then to lose three right here in the capitol city where our headquarters is ? it was just shocking," Studenicka said. He said part of the reason for the big impact on the local guardsmen, is there are only 150 members in the local unit and 3,000 statewide "so chances are almost everyone knows everyone else."

"I think now 9/6 is another date that guardsmen here are going to remember along with 9/11."

"People are in a combat zone. They are constantly in danger," he said. "But at an IHOP in Carson City, there's not that sense of danger. Then all of the sudden out of left field comes this shocking news."

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong, whose calming Old West style became familiar during live local television briefings in the aftermath of the IHOP shootings, said there's no denying "northern Nevada has suffered a great deal in September."

"While time may help heal," he said, "the scars of this month will never fade."

Greece to enact more austerity measures (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greece will have to take fresh austerity measures, the debt-ridden country's finance minister said Wednesday, a day after Athens moved a step closer to getting the vital bailout funds it needs to avoid a disastrous default next month.

The prospect of more tax increases and spending cuts are likely to be met with mounting concern in a country mired in a deep recession and the number of unemployed rising to around one in seven.

"Do we have to take additional measures? Yes we have to take supplementary measures ... because of the recession, because of the difficult task, and the weakness of the central administration have not produced the required results," Evangelos Venizelos said in Parliament ahead of a Cabinet meeting.

He did not specify what the measures might be. Measures taken so far include pension and salary cuts in the public sector, and a series of tax hikes on everything from food and fuel to property and income.

Greece has been under pressure from its international lenders to meet fiscal targets and slash the size of its bloated public sector, which has more than 750,000 staff in the country of 11 million people. It has already pledged to suspend up to 20,000 civil servants on reduced pay as part of a plan to shed 150,000 public jobs through 2015.

It also recently announced a new property tax, to be paid through electricity bills to make it easier and faster for the state to collect. However that proposal is being met with resistance ? state electricity company unionists have threatened not to collect the tax and not to cut off the electricity supply to those who refuse to pay.

A public reeling from repeated rounds of spending cuts and tax hikes is showing waning patience with measures that appear not to have the necessary effect on the state budget. Many warn that with the country facing a fourth year of recession in 2012 and unemployment at more than 16 percent, yet more austerity could sink the economy.

Yannis Varoufakis, an economics professor at Athens University, said the government's actions appear increasingly desperate and likened its strategy to "the last stages" of the Vietnam war.

"The more obvious it was that the war was lost, the more desperate the attempts of the United States army and air force to bomb Vietnamese villages in order to save them," Varoufakis said.

Even though the prevailing view in the markets now is that Greece will receive the next batch of bailout funds, many analysts think the recent game of brinkmanship played out between the country and its creditors will be repeated at the end of the year.

Varoufakis said a "real default will be on the cards" in December when Greece will be looking to get the next installment of bailout cash.

"We will have to wait to find out what the state of the credit crunch on the European banking sector will be because that is what will determine whether Greece defaults in December or later," Varoufakis said.

For now Venizelos is pressing ahead with the strategy and argues that Greece will emerge a stronger economy once it's got a grip on its public finances and rebalanced the economy more towards the private sector and away from the state.

Venizelos said that without the supervision of debt inspectors from the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission, collectively known as the troika, Greece would have "slipped off the fiscal track."

The troika has been pressing the Greek government hard to adhere to the reforms it agreed to in return for bailout money. In particular, the inspectors want it to move faster in reducing the size of the public sector.

Their quarterly reviews of the country's progress is essential to the country's international creditors releasing funds from a euro110 billion ($151 billion) bailout loan that has been keeping Greece afloat since last year.

The troika suspended its current review in early September amid talk of missed targets and delays, and Venizelos held two critical conference calls with them on Monday and Tuesday.

Brussels and Athens said progress had been made in the calls, and the troika heads are due back in the Greek capital next week ? a clear hint that the next batch of bailout cash.

Venizelos conceded that it was a "humiliation" for Greece to ask for loans and to be under international supervision, but that the country had to if it was to avoid a more a calamitous outcome.

"If we did not have the supervision of the troika ... we would have again unfortunately slipped off the fiscal track," he said. "Just as the country derailed in an unprecedented away between 2004 and 2009. It's not a question of intent. It's a matter of mentality, lack of ability, management structure, methods, habits, and inertia."

"The choices we are making are, unfortunately, absolutely necessary," Venizelos insisted.

Sprint outs the Motorola Admiral in Youtube video

Motorola Admiral

We've yet to have an official announcement regarding the Motorola Admiral on Sprint, but that hasn't stopped the SprintNow Youtube channel from doing it anyway. Dubbed a "productivity powerhouse," you get clear shots of the 3.1-inch touchscreen, four-row QWERTY keyboard, 5MP camera, direct connect button and all the other usual smartphone sundries. There's also a mute button and camera button, if you're into that sort of thing. It'll also have 5-device mobile hotspot, and Sprint TV.

Check out the full video, and a handful of screen captures, after the break.

Having a Contractor for Foundation Repair - Your #1 Resource For ...

Do you feel that your lack of info about Having a Contractor for Foundation Repair is preventing you from creating a key decision? A lot of folks run into this: you've a key choice to make but do not have enough information to create it. I recently came across the write-up beneath and it discusses Having a Contractor for Foundation Repair in more detail than I've read just before.

Having a Contractor for Foundation Repair

Article by Geoffrey Sanchez

Having a contractor for a foundation repair job may give perfection to the job, but it is also dear. However, folk lacking the time or skill to do the job themselves could select one from several of the foundation repair contractors available. Giving a foundation correct contract to an external agency means having to deal with the inconvenience of workmen in your home for two days and someone being at home in the whole period of the correct job for supervision and security.Contractors for fix work are the same folk who also do other home improvement contracts. You will find several of them online as also in your own neighborhood street. Home improvement contractors work as smalltime businesses. They often have a few skilled and inexperienced workers and limited resources. They also have built-up contacts with certain suppliers, who sell them materials at concession rates.Once you approach a contractor, the first thing they might do is to visit your home, examine the size of the degradation and pull up an estimate based on the same. Typically contractors do not charge anything for estimates. It is always careful not to depend on a single estimate. At least 3 guesses must be taken. Don?t accept the lowest estimate? rather see who provides better materials and better overall quality of the job. It is stupid to save some greenbacks solely to have the entire fix work redone in 2 years. Before money is exchanged, ask the contractor for references and any prior history of work done. These references must all be cross-checked, paying a visit to their houses and checking their quality of work if possible. Also determine with the Better Business Bureau if they had any complaint lodged by previous unhappy customers. One more important thing to be checked before paying the contractor the 1st down-payment is whether they have all the requisite licenses. Home foundation repair work involving fitting of sump-pumps needs licenses. Also if the repairs surpasses a certain amount, which is roughly ,000, the contractor must have a license. Then there is insurance. 3 insurances must be checked for: (i) the Workman?s Compensation Insurance, which protects you if a worker is wounded in your premises; (ii) the Automobile Insurance, which would assist you were your contractor to break any other auto on your grounds and (iii) the Gen. liability Insurance, which would compensate you if your contractor or workers would damage any of your property. It isn?t required and, of course, not wise to pay the entire amount to the contractor ahead. Pretty much contractors begin work with a little quantity of the total upfront and claim the rest of the amount on the completion of the job. There are a few unforeseeable scenarios which will happen like natural calamities, strikes of cars or even death of the contractor for which a homeowner has to be prepared for. Finally, it always pays never to rely totally on the judgment of the contractor. There are a few do-it-yourself books and guides which one must read before starting on a job. Knowing what the fix job is all about will go a good distance in defending you from being cheated..

Review: Dead Island (360, PS3, PC) : Videogame News & Reviews ...

Posted by Pascal Tekaia on Monday, September 19, 2011 ? Leave a Comment?

(Un)Holy Union

Deep Silver?s action take on the zom?bie game?sub-genre?received many raised eye?brows with its unique and emo?tional reverse-timeline trailer ear?lier this year. Imme?di?ately, fans of the undead ?began eagerly antic?i?pat?ing the game, sweaty-palmed and sali?vat?ing, while those who had had their fill of shuffling/sprinting corpses shook their heads in quiet (and some?times not-so-quiet) capit?u?la?tion. Regard?less of which camp you have sworn alle?giance to, Dead Island comes through with fly?ing col?ors, deliv?er?ing an intense expe?ri?ence that?s as gritty and fran?tic as it is beau?ti?ful to behold.

Dead Island gives play?ers a choice of four main char?ac?ters to con?trol: the under?cover Hong Kong cop Xiang Mei, the washed-up rap?per Sam B, has-been NFL foot?ball player Logan, or police-office-turned-bodyguard Purna. The char?ac?ters effec?tively func?tion like quasi-classes, with each indi?vid?ual hav?ing slightly altered base stats and each spe?cial?iz?ing in a cer?tain weapon type (blunt, sharp, firearms, etc) with match?ing skill?trees.

Stats and skill trees are two exam?ples in how Dead Island com?bines RPG ele?ments into its action-driven game?play. The core game?play revolves around pick?ing up and com?plet?ing quests, which are typ?i?cally cen?tered around either sur?vival on the island or escape from it. Com?plet?ing quests, killing ene?mies (or maim?ing them in cre?ative ways) net expe?ri?ence points, which serve to level your char?ac?ter. Along the way, a wide vari?ety of weapons and items used for trad?ing or cre?at?ing new items can be found; weapons come in dif?fer?ent tiers famil?iar to the RPG crowd (stan?dard whites, greens, blues, and pur?ples) and can be upgraded at spe?cial work?benches to receive even higher stat boosts. In short, the game design shares many sim?i?lar?i?ties with 2009?s acclaimed Bor?der?lands. This is an impor?tant point to stress; if you?re not com?fort?able with play?ing Bor?der?lands set on an island par?adise with zom?bies, then you may want to look else?where for your undead fix.

Postcard-Perfect

On the graph?i?cal front, Dead Island sim?ply looks amaz?ing. The fic?tional resort island of Banoi lends itself beau?ti?fully for lush and vibrant vis?tas. Dur?ing the early stages of the game that take place on the hotel grounds with its tiki bars, beaches, secluded bays and swim?ming pools, the color palette fre?quently alter?nates between two extremes. On one hand, the lux?u?ri?ant greens and blues of an island par?adise, drenched with the deep and vivid reds of blood and gore. On the other, the game has, at times, a kind of washed-out, sun-bleached effect. Even dur?ing later parts of the game, when you leave the beach-side jun?gles behind and head all over the island, the graph?ics remain admirable, even if for no other rea?son than the atten?tion to detail in the environments.

The per?fect place for a relax?ing zom?bie infestation!

As impres?sive as the out?doors look in Dead Island (dur?ing Act I, there is a dis?tant storm often vis?i?bly and some?times audi?bly brew?ing; dur?ing Act II the weather actu?ally intro?duces a rain cycle with abrupt starts and stops ? very trop?i?cal!), it?s a shame that the same can?not be said for the (once)/ human denizens of the island. You?d expect zom?bies to have a pal?lid, gray and gen?er?ally unhealthy glow to them, but even those with?out a hunger for flesh and brains often sport a mot?tled, plas?tic com?plex?ion, and in some cut-scene close-ups are just hor?rid to look?at.

Banoi is a huge, decay?ing play?ground rav?aged by an unnat?ural cat?a?stro?phe, and signs of human strug?gle are evi?dent every?where. Dur?ing your explo?ration of the island?s nooks and cran?nies, you may stum?ble upon a secluded and fenced-off shack that served some unlucky soul as a last stand, or a hastily con?structed scaf?fold that leads to a few aban?doned pic?nic chairs and stacks of bricks where some poor bas?tard had a few rounds of undead tar?get prac?tice not too long ago. As a true sand?box game, Dead Island encom?passes miles upon miles of ter?rain, and large tracts of it are avail?able right at the game?s out?set. Load?ing times are few and far between; for the most part, you?re free to just go where you wish with?out has?sle. But be warned: the zom?bie hordes are every?where, and a mis?cal?cu?lated step around the wrong cor?ner can and will land you in a world of trouble.

What You Can?t?See?

Chances are, your day?s about to get a lit?tle bit more?ugly.

It?s hard to say much about the music in the game, because there is (wisely) so lit?tle of it. Gen?er?ally, unless near a radio, you?ll spend your time lis?ten?ing for the shuf?fling and groan?ing of walk?ing corpses, or the sound of a few of the poor dev?ils who are mak?ing lunch out of a fresh kill. This ramps up quickly, how?ever, in Act II, when the low grunts are and growls are shat?tered at con?stant inter?vals by rage-filled screams that echo off the walls and fill your world for a few heart-stopping moments. It?s times like these when you real?ize that this isn?t just your aver?age, run-of-the-mill zom?bie infes?ta?tion; there is real men?ace here, and it starts to sat?u?rate the game, turn?ing it into a more and more unset?tling and uneasy expe?ri?ence. There were a few par?tic?u?larly ter?ri?fy?ing moments where my char?ac?ter, run?ning at full speed and pant?ing heav?ily, was try?ing in vain to sum?mon the strength to clam?ber up a cou?ple of dump?sters and over a brick wall to safety, all the while hear?ing the pierc?ing shrieks of an approach?ing swarm of zom?bies hot on my tail and scrab?bling at my heels (and some, like the newly-turned Infected, do move fast as?hell!).

The voice act?ing in the game, on the other hand, is a bit of a mixed bag. Being an inter?na?tional resort, the sur?vivors on Banoi speak in all man?ner of accents and dialects. This some?times leads to some unin?ten?tion?ally over-the-top moments, par?tic?u?larly from the game?s four playable pro?tag?o?nists. For exam?ple, Sam B?s urban take on the south?ern drawl can be a bit much to stom?ach, to say noth?ing of the for?eign accents of some of the oth?ers. A wel?come coun?ter?point to this are the (very few and far between) audio record?ings you stum?ble across, fea?tur?ing the unmis?tak?able tones of Cam Clarke as a reporter who was on the trail of some mys?te?ri?ous (pos?si?bly related to the zom?bie out?break) hap?pen?ings on Banoi, and ends up caught up in the early stages of the out?break itself. It?s well-produced moments of hor?ror like these where you can really see how much fun the team at Deep Sil?ver had with the?game!

Friends? Who Needs Friends?

I would be amiss to not give a men?tion to the game?s mul?ti?player sys?tem. Mov?ing away from mul?ti?player game modes and spe?cial?ized maps, the game instead lets you team up with oth?ers in your cur?rent cam?paign. Remov?ing the need for a sep?a?rate match-finding lobby screen, the design?ers have opted instead for a mes?sage dis?played on-screen any?time another player with sim?i?lar story progress as you is nearby, giv?ing you the option to join their game with a sim?ple but?ton tap. While a stream?lined and incred?i?bly sim?ple sys?tem, I found get?ting into mul?ti?player groups to be dis?ad?van?ta?geous for my enjoy?ment of the game. On mul?ti?ple occa?sions, after exit?ing a co-op group, I found my quest log to have changed with?out my knowl?edge, either adding a quest or two I didn?t pick up, or fast-forwarding me through another quest that one of my part?ners had appar?ently already fin?ished. Even worse, you do not get a say in whether another player joins you or not; at one point, being in a safe place away from any pos?si?ble harm, I left my spot on the couch to visit the facil?i?ties for a few min?utes. When I returned, I found that in my absence some?one had joined my game, com?pleted the quest I had been about to embark upon, and left again, leav?ing my char?ac?ter stand?ing in a com?pletely dif?fer?ent place, and me hav?ing not a clue as to what plots points I had just missed out?on.

Death Ain?t Pretty

Xiang Mei likes to slice ?em and dice??em

Dead Island does offer up a seedy under?belly beneath the beau?ti?ful gloss of its envi?ron?ments and its fran?tic fight-for-survival com?bat. One offender is its respawn?ing sys?tem. Should you fall in bat?tle (and you will!), a few sec?onds will see you placed back near the spot where you expired. Unfor?tu?nately, this isn?t always reli?able, as a few times I was made to trek for quite a while to get back to the site of my demise, and other times I was dumped uncer?e?mo?ni?ously at the exact same spot, right amid the same gnash?ing and claw?ing horde that had just torn me to shreds sec?onds ear?lier. Need?less to say, within a mat?ter of moments I was once again ripped to rib?bons, and this cycle repeated a few more times until I was finally able to run far enough away to escape.

Another, more unfor?giv?able, flaw is the design of some of the game?s side mis?sions, espe?cially early on in the game. The main story mis?sions are usu?ally inter?est?ing and revolve fur?ther?ing the cause of Banoi?s sur?vivors in some mean?ing?ful way. But it was laugh?able to get mis?sion after mis?sion early on in the game that revolved around find?ing a mis?placed neck?lace or fetch?ing some alco?hol to treat a hang?over. One mis?sion went so far as to send me all over the place to retrieve a lost teddy bear! I?m sorry, but aren?t we in a fuck?ing zom?bie apoc?a?lypse?here?!

Finally, the game has very lim?ited legs to stand on once it?s com?pleted. As men?tioned before, the four playable char?ac?ters have dif?fer?ent weapon affini?ties, stats, and skill trees, but apart from what weapon each prefers to use they play essen?tially the same. The story does not change one bit depend?ing on who you choose to play as; in fact, in many of the game?s cutscenes, all four char?ac?ters show up, and it is implied that, while you con?trol one, they travel together as a group. Even the game?s intro?duc?tion, when your char?ac?ter wakes up in his or her hotel room, is exactly the same no mat?ter who you?ve cho?sen to play as. It really seems that this was a lost oppor?tu?nity on the part of the developers.

Final Ver?dict

Dead Island proves to be an incred?i?bly enter?tain?ing title full of gor?geous scenery and intense action. While it treats some zombie-outbreak tropes with a tongue-in-cheek men?tal?ity, like a lack of any rhyme or rea?son to why the dead have sud?denly begun to rean?i?mate for much of the game, it instead suc?cumbs to other equally com?mon com?plaints with the genre, like many sur?vivors want?ing to stay alone in their shel?ters instead of join?ing the larger group and some facepalm moments in mis?sion design. How?ever, it pro?vides a large open play?ground, and offers a world that I look for?ward to revis?it?ing again and again, much more than Bor?der?lands ever did (kick?ing a zom?bie to the bot?tom of a swim?ming pool and watch?ing it drown because it?s too stu?pid to hold its breath under?wa?ter and too slow to get back up quickly never gets old!). Despite a rocky start on the PC with the wrong ver?sion being released, reports of some ques?tion?able devel?oper atti?tudes, and a mul?ti?player sys?tem that I?ve learned to avoid, the single-player cam?paign is well worth a visit to the island of?Banoi.

Strong quake hits northeastern India; 23 dead

The death toll from a strong earthquake in northeastern India and Nepal climbed to 23 on Monday, but police said the full extent of the damage in the remote region was not known.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9, struck at 6:10 p.m. Sunday local time, triggering landslides, damaging buildings and sending people rushing into the streets. The epicenter was in India's Sikkim state near the border with Nepal, but shaking was felt across northern and eastern India and as far away as Bangladesh and Tibet.

At least seven people in India's Sikkim state were killed and more than 50 injured, according to the state's top official, Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso. The north Indian state of West Bengal reported six deaths, and Bihar state reported three.

Nepal's government said seven people died there, including two men and a child who were killed when a brick wall toppled outside the British Embassy in the capital, Katmandu. Nearly 70 people were injured, some of them seriously, and were in hospitals across the city.

The full extent of damage was not immediately known because the region is sparsely populated with many people living in remote areas now cut off by mudslides triggered by the quake, Sikkim state police Chief Jasbir Singh told The Associated Press.

TV stations reported buildings buckled, sidewalks cracked and two major roads collapsed in Sikkim's state capital of Gangtok, 42 miles southeast of the quake's epicenter near the border with Nepal. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police said two of its buildings had collapsed in Gangtok.

Small army columns fanned out across the city of some 50,000 overnight to search for anyone pinned under fallen debris.

"We have sounded a high alert. Police are on the streets in Gangtok and other major towns," Gyatso said.

Electricity and some phone service was interrupted in the area.

Gyatso said paramilitary soldiers worked through the night Sunday trying to clear the national highway blocked at two places due to landslides.

Power lines snapped in the West Bengal cities of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, which "are now in total darkness," state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, according to Press Trust of India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh summoned the National Disaster Management Authority for an emergency meeting.

The region has been hit by major earthquakes in the past, including in 1950 and 1897.

In neighboring Nepal and Bangladesh, the quake Sunday night sent residents rushing out of their homes, offices and shopping centers.

In Katmandu, members of Parliament who were debating the national budget ran out of the assembly hall into a parking area. They returned 15 minutes later and resumed their session.

The quake was also felt as far as the Indian capital, with New Delhi residents also rushing out of shaking buildings, and in the Chinese-ruled Himalayan region of Tibet. According to China's official Xinhua News Agency, the quake caused three houses in Tibet to collapse, injured one person and disrupted a border county's telecommunications services.

There have been at least two aftershocks of magnitude 6.1 and 5.3, Indian seismology official R.S. Dattatreyan said. He warned more aftershocks were possible.

Post-Weekend Worry: STD Concerns Peak on Mondays (LiveScience.com)

People appear to be more concerned with their sexual health on Mondays than any other day of the week, a new Danish study suggests.

The results show visits to a website providing information about sexually transmitted diseases peak on Mondays.

The researchers said they suspect the phenomenon is due to sudden worry about contracting and STD after a particularly raucous weekend. People have unprotected sex more frequently on Fridays and Saturdays, they said.

Although people may be immediately concerned that they have contracted an STD, they appear to delay acting on this worry until the workweek. This may be because they want to "sleep on" their decision to seek health care until Monday, the researchers said.

Previous research has shown that the number of phone calls to an AIDS/STD hotline in Denmark was highest on Mondays. Because this hotline is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, the researchers assumed the Monday peak was due to an accumulation of concerns over the weekend.

But that seems not to be the case ? the website examined in the new study is accessible at any time.

The researchers, from Maastricht University in The Netherlands, kept track of the number of visits to a Danish website called SOATEST, which educates visitors on whether they may want to seek STD testing based on their sexual behavior. The researchers hypothesized site visits would spike on the weekend.

They examined visits over a two-month period, between April and June of this year.

"A remarkable finding ? given that the website is accessible 24/7 ? is that the number of visitors per day still peaks each Monday," the researchers wrote. The only exception was Monday, April 25, which was a Dutch holiday; that week, visits peaked on Tuesday.

Since quick action is important when someone contracts an STD, future research should focus on the reasons why people delay accessing online sexual health information, the researchers said.

In addition, other types of counseling services, including telephone hotlines, should take this "weekend effect" into account and increase their capacity on Mondays, the researchers said.

The study will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.

Pass it on: People are more inclined to seek out sexual health counseling services on Mondays.
