The Hip & Urban Girl's Guide: Theatre Review: Anything Goes

Theatre Review: Anything Goes

The Roundabout Theatre Company is known for its high calibre productions and top rate performers. The RTC's production of Anything Goes, which was the 2011 Tony Award winning best revival of a musical, exceeded my expectations and embodied everything that a classic musical should have.?

Cole Porter has written, arguably, some of the most timeless, romantic melodies for musical theatre. Many of his best known songs such as You're the Top, De-lovely, of course the title song, Anything Goes were sung beautifully by the multi-talented cast members of this most endearing musical comedy. While there are countless subplots with archetypal characters lacking deeper development, the narrative is amusing, light, and humorous. Anything can happen on an ocean liner with lovers, crooks with mistaken identities, and divas all interacting to get what they want while helping their friends along the way. ?

Actress, Rachel York as the diva and star of the show, plays the part of Reno Sweeney with old world glamour and class. York is a true triple-threat in every sense of the word, who acts, sings, and dances brilliantly well. As the star entertainer aboard the ship, her powerful rendition of Blow, Gabriel, Blow literally stopped the show, and in true diva fashion, she basked in the spotlight a little longer than necessary for added effect. As the debonair gentleman, Billy, actor Josh Franklin did not quite have a commanding presence, but did a respectable job juggling the numerous characters he portrayed. Strong ensemble members added bubbling energy and enthusiasm to help support the leads.?
Jaw-dropping dance numbers were remarkably choreographed by director and Tony Award winner, Kathleen Marshall. Her toe-tapping dance numbers almost had me dancing in the aisles! The romanticism Marshall injected in her production is evocative of a simpler, sentimental time when true love triumphs against insurmountable odds. ?

You cannot afford to miss this Cole Porter classic with its old fashioned charm, soaring melodies, and memorable dance numbers; see it before it sails away!?

Chrysler's 2Q net income up 16 percent on US sales

DETROIT (AP) ? Chrysler Group's sales picked up in the second quarter thanks to strong U.S. demand for trucks and SUVs, but the company still cut its full-year sales and profit targets after a slower than expected start to the year.

Chrysler said Tuesday that its net income rose 16 percent to $507 million in the April-June period from $436 million a year ago. It was Chrysler's eighth straight quarterly profit.

Chrysler sold 643,000 vehicles worldwide in the second quarter, up 10 percent from a year ago. Sales were also up 10 percent in the U.S., where Chrysler sells 75 percent of its vehicles. Chrysler's U.S. sales rose faster than the industry average of 8 percent in the second quarter.

Revenue was up 7 percent to $18 billion from $16.8 billion.

Chrysler said it now expects to ship 2.6 million vehicles worldwide in 2013, at the low end of its target of between 2.6 million and 2.7 million. It expects to earn between $1.7 billion and $2.2 billion, down from its previous target of around $2.2 billion.

Chrysler's first-quarter figures suffered because it was slow to release new versions of the Ram pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, two of its most popular vehicles. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne described the first quarter as a one-off event and urged workers to "just close your eyes and plug your nose and move on from here."

Chrysler's production issues were resolved and there were plenty of vehicles on the ground in the second quarter. U.S. Ram sales rose 30.4 percent over last year as construction companies and other small businesses raced to replace aging trucks. It was the Ram's best second quarter since 2007.

Grand Cherokee sales soared 27 percent to 47,663. The Grand Cherokee is one of Chrysler's biggest money makers. U.S. buyers paid an average of $40,294 for a Grand Cherokee in the second quarter, up 9 percent from a year ago, according to car pricing site Kelley Blue Book.

U.S. sales were up for the company's Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Ram brands; only the Chrysler brand, with aging vehicles like the Town and Country minivan, saw sales drop.

Chrysler took a $151 million charge in the second quarter for the recall of 1.56 million older model Jeep Libertys and Grand Cherokees. Dealers are installing trailer hitches on vehicles made between 2002 and 2007 to mitigate the risk of a fire after a rear-end crash. Dealers are also inspecting another 1.2 million Grand Cherokees from the 1999 to 2004 model years to make sure their hitches are on safely.

Chrysler initially defied the government's order to recall the vehicles, but reached a compromise with the government in mid-June.

In the second half of this year, Chrysler should get a boost from the release of the new Jeep Cherokee, which started rolling off the line in Toledo, Ohio, last month. The Cherokee replaces the Liberty, which was phased out last year.

"Chrysler Group is poised for a very strong performance in the second half of the year," Marchionne said Tuesday in a statement.

Chrysler is majority owned by Italian automaker Fiat SpA, which said Tuesday it earned $188 million in the second quarter. Without Chrysler, Fiat would have lost $327 million as its European sales dropped 5 percent.

MAKING A MARK: Animal and Wildlife Art - Two exhibitions

There are two exhibitions this month for animal and wildlife art. You can find details below of:
  • the Summer Exhibition of the Association of Animal Artists
  • the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA)

Finally, I offer some points to ponder for groups of artists who want to mount exhibitions of artwork in places which are not commercial galleries.

The Association of Animal Artists - Summer Exhibition

The Summer Exhibition of the Association of Animal Artists?(AAA) opens today at The Haworth Gallery in Accrington, Lancashire and continues until 15th September 2013.

Below are a few facts about the association for all those animal art fans who are not familiar with it

This is a relatively new art society. It was founded in 2009 with the aim of focusing on all types of animal art.

We are unique in that, not only do we welcome work of ANY animal, be it mammal, bird, reptile, fish or even insect, but, importantly, we also include the domestic animals we share our lives with, such as dogs, cats, horses and farm animals.

It welcome all styles of art - from traditional and detailed to more painterly and expressive.

AAA ?is also an association which places a big emphasis on supporting charities which help animals - which I've found to be very common characteristic across groups founded by animal artists. ?These are people where the subject matter really matters!

AAA is committed to supporting its animal charity partners and actively works to promote them, including Lancashire Constabulary Retired Police Horse Benevolent Fund, World Horse Welfare, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (Martin Mere Wetland Centre) and the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre.

It's also an association which encourages artists to work from life or to try something new and learn how to do so.

Their preview event today is being filmed by the Society of All Artists.

Dates: 27 July - 15 September 2013

Times:?Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 12 noon to 4.45pm and Saturday, Sunday 12 noon to 4.15pm

Admission: Open to all and admission is free - plus free parking.

National Exhibition of Wildlife Art

The 2013 National Exhibition of Wildlife Art opened last Friday and continues unto?August 4th at its normal venue - the Gordale Garden Centre, Chester High Rd South Wirral, Burton CH64 8TF

This year is their 20th anniversary and in 20 years it has grown to become a very popular show - particularly with collectors who don't like to spend the time or the expense of visiting London. ?That said visitors actually come from all over the UK.

You can see an online gallery of the artwork in the exhibition online. ?They've always been overlayed with a watermark but this year it's absolutely HUGE watermarks which completely spoils the viewing of the artwork.

There's a balance to be struck between making sure images aren't stolen and actually being able to see the image in the first place. ?Maybe the organisers could experiment with smaller images with a much smaller watermark and one page of images per artist?

The exhibition is usually very successful and has consistently sold a large percentage of the works on show. ?In 2011, they sold 50%. ?Whether this is via the show or because they put large images on the website is unclear.

The exhibition also siphons money from sales of original artwork to support?the charitable work of Tusk, Chester Zoo and the Wildlife Trusts.

Prizewinners

Below are the names of the artists who have won prizes at the show. ?I've also included links to their websites in their names - which means you can see better images of their artwork on their websites. ?The links in the titles are to the artists websites.

Putting on an art exhibition - points to ponder on

For those thinking of getting new ventures off the ground in terms of exhibitions to display artwork by groups of artists here are a few points to to ponder on.

  • Art Collectors also live outside London! ;) Think about venues which have easy access from all parts of the UK. ?Being near to a motoroway junction can make a big difference.
  • Free car parking can make the difference between people coming once and coming again this year and next year and in years to come.
  • Venues which are accessible by public transport can help visitor numbers (although I personally suspect free car parking is more important! ?Views on this topic are most welcome!)
  • You can exhibit art in a gallery - but it doesn't need to be a commercial gallery. ?Check out the opportunities offered by local authorities
  • You can exhibit art outside galleries - think about the type of venues which are compatible with your art and the interests of your collectors
  • Check the set-up in terms of people handling sales and the need to staff the exhibition with artists involved in the exhibition
  • Never ever under-estimate the time involved in planning, setting up, running and taking down an exhibition. ?There is a very good reason why most art groups only have one big exhibition a year!
  • Do NOT forget the marketing or the time this needs. ?These days marketing?often means website, blog, twitter account, Facebook Page, flyers, articles for journals, mailshots to interested parties and advertising in relevant national and local press. ?The important bit is to assess afterwards which aspects of marketing made a big difference and which were a bit of a waste of time.

QUESTION: What are your best tips for new art groups who want to exhibit their the artwork of their members?

Detroit case may alter distressed U.S. city behavior: Moody's

(Reuters) - Detroit's filing for bankruptcy protection is "profoundly meaningful" for the small number of local governments in the United States that are below investment grade, and could change their approach to pensions and other long-term liabilities, Moody's Investors Service said on Friday.

Some distressed local governments could even find bankruptcy more appealing if Detroit can use its Chapter 9 case [ID:nL1N0FU01E] to slash pension benefits or general obligation debt, Moody's said.

But drawn-out, costly litigation could also deter other cash-strapped cities from filing, said Moody's Managing Director for Public Sector Ratings Anne Van Praagh.

"If Detroit is bogged down in years of expensive proceedings and fails to restore solvency or materially restructure its liabilities, other distressed issuers would be unlikely to emulate Detroit's approach," Van Praagh said in a Moody's report.

Moody's rates the vast majority of U.S. cities and towns above Baa3 and does not expect them to be affected by Detroit's dire situation.

The credit rating agency has just 34 local governments at speculative grades.

There could be a "modest increase" in the number of those towns that choose to use tactics similar to Detroit's if the Michigan city succeeds in cutting accrued pension benefits and general obligation debt, Moody's said.

In particular, if Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr is able to treat GO debt as unsecured, "the example could weaken GO claims relative to secured liabilities in other potential bankruptcy situations, and we could change the rank ordering of various debt security types including GO bonds," Moody's said.

Rig owner eyes relief well to divert gas off coast

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The owner of a natural gas drilling rig aflame off of Louisiana's coast said preparations were under way for the possible drilling of a relief well to divert gas from the site and bring the well under control.

Adam Bourgoyne, a former dean of Louisiana State University's petroleum engineering department, said such an effort is a complicated task that could take weeks to complete.

The relief well team has to figure out questions such as where to intercept the well bore and what tools will be needed. The surface team has to figure out whether it's safe to get onto the platform, how much debris there is and how it can be removed, he said.

"Sometimes, if the well control blowout preventers are intact, they might be able to get on-site and put down enough water and so forth," said Bourgoyne, now a consultant.

Because the well involved is a natural gas well, not an oil well, experts said the pollution threats are far less than those posed by some previous accidents.

Federal inspectors said a light sheen was spotted around the rig on Wednesday evening, though authorities said it quickly dissipated and the fire aboard the rig continued to be fed by natural gas. A sheen was spotted shortly after the blowout began Tuesday but it, too, quickly dissipated.

Gas wells often also have oil or other hydrocarbons as well as natural gas. Officials and scientists agree the latest mishap should not be nearly as damaging as the BP oil spill, also in the Gulf of Mexico, that sent crude oil oozing ashore in 2010.

"A gas well's not going to result in any kind of major pollution ? perhaps not even significant pollution if it's burning," Bourgoyne said.

University of Georgia marine scientist Samantha "Mandy" Joye also said the pollution and health dangers posed by a gas well are quite different than those posed at the well where the Deepwater Horizon rig blew up in 2010, killing 11 people and spewing millions of gallons of oil for weeks.

"The biggest danger from gas is that it is extremely flammable. At high concentration, gas exposure can cause health issues (vomiting, headaches, and worse) but such high levels are not likely to be reached in warm, shallow waters," Joye wrote in an email response to questions. She planned a trip to the area later this week to take water samples for analysis.

Tuesday's blowout, which prompted the safe evacuation of 44 workers, occurred at a drilling rig adjacent to a natural gas platform that wasn't producing gas at the time. The rig was completing a "sidetrack well," which drills into the same well hole under the platform. Such wells are used to remedy an obstruction or to access a different part of the gas reserve.

Gas spewed throughout the day and ignited late Tuesday night. The cause of the blowout was under investigation, one being overseen by the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.

By Wednesday evening, the derrick and drill floor structure had collapsed. A fireboat was pumping water on the rig in an effort to keep as much of it as cool as possible.

The Coast Guard maintained traffic restrictions within 500 meters of the site and the Federal Aviation Administration restricted aircraft up to 2,000 feet over the area. The blowout and fire were not expected to affect Thursday's opening of the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, a major tourist draw on the state's only inhabited barrier island, said Jefferson Parish Council member Chris Roberts.

"We are singularly focused on coming up with an action plan that would regain control over the well," said James Noe, an executive with Hercules Offshore Inc., which was operating the rig for Walters Oil & Gas, an exploration and production company.

Natural gas ? mostly methane ? is far more soluble than oil, meaning it more easily dissolves, dilutes and disperses than crude oil, said Donald Boesch, president of the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science and a member of the federal panel that investigated the BP oil spill. That means concentrations would be far less lethal to the marine environment, he said.

Joye said the accident, the second blowout off the Louisiana coast this month, does raise concerns about whether more regulation is needed.

"I believe that BSEE is taking rig safety very seriously, but more active rigs give rise to more opportunity for problems. Accidents can happen," she said.

Environmentalists in Louisiana said the accident proves the need for strong oversight of offshore operations.

Darryl Maleck-Wiley of the Sierra Club said, "Once again this is highlighting the dangerous nature of oil and gas operations in the Gulf and that we need aggressive inspection programs of these operations by the federal government."

MIAMI: Q&A about health care marketplace | Personal Finance ...

? WHAT IS THE EXCHANGE? IS IT THE SAME AS THE HEALTH MARKETPLACE?

The federally run health exchange or marketplace is an online shopping site designed to take the confusion and anxiety out of buying private health insurance for individuals and families who buy their coverage directly. Exchanges are meant to have the feel of an online travel site, like Expedia, where shoppers can compare prices of different plans. The marketplaces will be available in every state and are part of the Affordable Care Act.

The Obama Administration was referring to the online site as an exchange, but now prefers the term 'marketplace.'

--

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS I CAN ACCESS THE MARKETPLACE?

?The government unveiled a redesigned website, healthcare.gov, last month, which includes a web chat feature on the site.

?You can call 1-800-318-2596 24-hours a day, seven days a week and discuss various health plans with an operator in English, Spanish and other languages. Operators will take into account things like whether you have a disability, are pregnant, have a pre-existing condition or are a veteran to help narrow down what plans might be a good fit for you.

?You can also apply through regular mail by filling out a 13-page application.

---

HOW MUCH WILL THE AVERAGE HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN COST ME?

It's hard to say because Florida lawmakers voted to let the federal government run their marketplace. The feds still haven't published the rates because they are still finalizing them with insurers, but they are expected to be released in September. All plans will be required to offer the same set of benefits under the bronze, silver, gold and platinum plans, but the costs, including premiums, deductibles and co-pays are still a secret.

WHY DO CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS KNOW THEIR RATES, BUT FLORIDA STILL DOESN'T? ISN'T IT ALL UNDER THE SAME FEDERAL LAW?

The marketplaces are all under the same Affordable Care Act. But California is running its own marketplace so officials there already published their rates. Florida is at the mercy of the federal government for that information because the feds are running Florida's marketplace.

---

WILL I QUALIFY FOR A SUBSIDY?

Generally, those making less than $48,000 a year who don't have the option of getting health insurance through their jobs will qualify for some type of voucher from the government to help pay their insurance premiums. The less you make, the more the government will pay.

Kaiser Family Foundation has an interactive calculator that estimates premiums based on age, income, gender and family size as well as the tax subsidies that may be available. http://healthreform.kff.org/subsidycalculator.aspx

---

WHEN WILL ALL THIS TAKE PLACE?

Enrollment begins Oct 1. Coverage starts Jan 1. Enrollment ends March 31.

---

WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND AND WANT OUT OR WANT TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER PLAN?

Once you choose a plan, you're locked in for a year for the most part. If you get insurance through the marketplace and then get a job and want to switch to your employer's plan, you may have to pay a small penalty.

---

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MAKE BELOW THE FEDERAL POVERTY LEVEL? CAN I STILL GET COVERAGE UNDER THE MARKETPLACE?

No. Under the law, Medicaid is the only coverage option for people below the poverty line ? $11,490 for an individual or $23,550 for a family of four. People this poor cannot get subsidized private coverage in the new health insurance markets.

Eighteen states, including Florida, aren't expanding their Medicaid programs.

The poor will be exempt from penalties for being uninsured, but they also won't get help with their health care.

Canada's International Drug Patent Problem

In the eyes of the United States, Canada has a drug problem.

Granted, this isn't an illegal narcotics or drug cartel problem. But in the world of international trade, the problem is pretty bad. In fact, it's serious enough to land Canada on the "Watch List" in the U.S. Trade Representative's "Special 301 Report"?a report released annually that evaluates the intellectual property rights protection and enforcement of the United States's trading partners.

So how exactly did Canada end up on this list? It boils down to this: The United States and the world's major multinational pharmaceutical companies are unhappy with the way Canada interprets its drug patent laws.

"Canada is an outlier," says Patrick Kierans, a senior partner at Norton Rose Fulbright in Toronto who has represented multinational pharmaceutical companies. "It has a higher standard for drug patents than anywhere else in the world."

Defenders of Canada's patent system insist that this is not true. Other countries also have standards that differ from that of the U.S., they say, and patent systems worldwide are far from unified. Nevertheless, Canada is on the USTR's "Watch List"?a place usually reserved for developing economies.

This is actually an upgrade from years past, when Canada sat on the U.S.'s "Priority Watch List," keeping company with such notorious big-time IP infringers as China and Russia. The basis for Canada's lowly status in the eyes of the U.S. for four consecutive years had been its copyright laws and its commercial-scale trafficking of counterfeit products. But with passage in 2012 of Canada's Copyright Modernization Act, and the introduction this year of Canada's Counterfeit Products Act, these problems are deemed well on the way to being fixed.

Canada's drug patents, however, are another story. In its report, the USTR writes that the U.S. has "serious concerns" about Canada's treatment of pharmaceutical patents. It criticizes the country's administrative process for regulatory approval of pharmaceutical products, which curbs the right to appeal. And more pointedly, it expresses concern about the impact of Canada's "heightened" utility requirement for patents.

That utility requirement, in fact, has Big Pharma up in arms. It has prompted an international trade dispute that not only challenges a sovereign nation's legal system but also could end up costing Canadian taxpayers as much as $100 million. It raises broader questions that arise in a world where the value of intellectual property is rapidly outpacing that of real property, but where patent systems still vary from country to country.

In November of last year, Eli Lilly and Company notified the government of Canada that it intends to challenge the country's standards for granting patents, claiming that they violate provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The company launched its attack after Canadian courts invalidated Lilly's patent for Strattera, a drug used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In its formal filings, it demanded $100 million in compensation from Canada, saying that is the amount the patent invalidation cost the company.

So how is an individual company, albeit the tenth-largest pharmaceutical corporation in the world, able to demand $100 million in compensation from a nation of 35 million people? The drugmaker filed what is known as an investor-state dispute, which, under provisions of some international trade treaties, allows companies to initiate challenges against foreign governments.

University Lab's Dylan Moses No. 1 prospect at Rivals Underclassmen Challenge Top 2016-17 event

University Lab incoming freshman Dylan Moses?is having a summer that most high school football players can only dream of.

Moses first gained media attention when he received scholarship offers, as an eighth-grader, from two of college football's top programs, LSU and Alabama. And the offers haven't stopped since.

He also has scholarship offers from UCLA, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, Ole Miss and Texas.

And since colleges were calling, so did ESPN The Magazine, who expanded the 15-year-old's notoriety by putting him on the magazine cover.

Earlier this month, Moses traveled to DeSoto, Texas to compete, as a linebacker, in the Rivals 250 Underclassmen Challenge.?Moses earned the top spot on the 2016-17 prospect list, which also included North Webster's running back, Devin White.

And if that wasn't enough, last week MaxPreps released its 2017 Top 50 Watch List; Moses made that list too, along with Rummel's Devin Hutton and Evangel Christian's Connor Curry.

Moses has yet to play a single game for University Lab, but he has already said he will wait to commit to a school until he signs on National Signing Day 2017.

Dell shows off the UltraSharp 32: a 32-inch 4K Ultra HD display set to arrive in Q4 (eyes-on)

If you're looking to boost the resolution of your workflow, Dell took the opportunity to unleash one such display during the proceedings at SIGGRAPH this week. The UltraSharp 32 is a 32-inch Ultra HD unit that wields a 3,840 x 2,160 IGZO panel sorting 1.07 billion colors. An aluminum stand has replaced the plastic-draped one from previous models, but the same height adjustments reside around back. The UltraSharp 32 also houses both full and mini display ports (with the requisite cable included), HDMI jack, a built-in USB hub and an SD card reader along the left side. We had a chance to take a quick peek at the device and we can confirm the image quality -- especially when it comes to handling rich blacks. We also enjoyed gazing upon a matte finish rather than a glossy surface and we're told Dell has actually made some tweaks there to reduce any grainy results that may creep in. There's no word on pricing just yet, but the display is set to arrive during the fourth quarter of this year. A smattering of images from our brief eyes-on session await in the gallery.

Tattoos are about as common in NFL locker rooms as jock straps and four-letter words, but one ?longtime NFL personnel man? thinks ink will get more attention from the league going forward.

According to CBS? Bruce Feldman, NFL teams may start using police experts to inspect prospects? tattoos in the wake of the Aaron Hernandez ordeal. When the former Patriots tight end was arrested, law enforcement inspected his tattoos to see if he had any gang ties. Reports indicated that Hernandez may have been involved in the Bristol Bloods street gang due to a red ?Blood? tattoo found on his right hand. The tight end reportedly denied any involvement in street gangs.

Hernandez, charged with the murder of Odin L. Lloyd in Massachusetts, has sparked a lot of chatter about his possible gang background, including a high school photo of Hernandez throwing gang signs while dressed in Bloods red, which either shows he was a gang member back then or was being a high school kid and posing for an inappropriate photo.

A gang expert who spoke to the Boston Herald said Hernandez could well have a target tattooed on him.

?Hernandez could be a very appealing target for someone who wants to make a reputation for himself,? said Jorja Leap, adjunct professor of social welfare at UCLA. ?The sheriff needs to be extra careful with someone like Hernandez.?

Looking back, an old interview with Hernandez could prove to be prophetic. Asked about some of his ink, in particular one on his forearm that reads: ?If it is to be it is up to me,? Hernandez said. ?Whatever I want my life to be, it?s up to me. ... The life I want to live is all in my hands.?

Meanwhile, Geraldo Rivera, appearing on FOX News Channel recently, picked up the gang angle on Hernandez?s alleged crime.

That, in turn, led commentator Rush Limbaugh to pick up on Rivera?s comments on his radio show. Limbaugh recalled how he once said this about the league: ?The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and Crips without any weapons.?

Teen victim of alleged Cleveland serial killer was 'a good girl'

Cleveland Police via AP, Cuyahoga County Sheriff via AP

The bodies of Shirellda Helen Terry, left, and Shetisha Sheeley were found last week in East Cleveland, Ohio.

By Regina Garcia Cano and Thomas J. Sheeran, Associated Press

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- All three women whose bodies were found wrapped in trash bags in a dilapidated northeast Ohio neighborhood have been identified, families and authorities said.

The last two victims were identified Tuesday. One of them was 18-year-old Shirellda Helen Terry, the teen's grandmother told The Associated Press. Officials identified the other victim as Shetisha Sheeley, 28, of Cleveland.

Over the weekend the bodies of three women were found in a Cleveland home. Prosecutors have charged Michael Madison, a registered sex offender, with three counts each of aggravated murder and kidnapping. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Their bodies were found last week along with that of another woman in a dilapidated East Cleveland neighborhood dotted with abandoned houses.

Rosetta Terry said authorities notified the family Tuesday that her granddaughter was one of the victims. She said Shirellda was last seen July 10, leaving a Cleveland elementary school where she had a summer job.

Rosetta Terry described her granddaughter a caring person who would frequently attend Bible study groups and called and texted her mother.

"She was a good girl; she was a hugger," said Rosetta Terry. "We used to tease her that we were gonna put her on a hug diet."

The county medical examiner's office did not confirm Shirellda Terry's identity, saying the family had asked for time to inform relatives.

Earlier Tuesday, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton identified Sheeley as among the victims.

The identification was made through fingerprints and information from the tattoos, which "permitted the comparison" that led to her identification, said Thomas Gilson, Cuyahoga County's medical examiner.

During a news conference, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton says he knew one of the alleged victims of suspected serial killer Michael Madison.

Gilson said his office hoped to release information on how the women died within a few days.

Shetisha Sheeley was arrested June 30, 2012, on a charge of firing a weapon from a vehicle but the case was dismissed three months later. Her court-appointed attorney, Michael Nelson, said there were no witnesses who saw her firing the weapon.

Nelson told The Associated Press that Sheeley came from a troubled family background and never got help posting her $1,000 bond, keeping her locked up while the case moved through the courts.

"She lived on the edge," said Nelson, who recalled her as unemployed, living in an apartment alone and vulnerable as she struggled to make a life.

The first known victim was identified by police on Monday as Angela Deskins, 38, of Cleveland, whose body was found Saturday. Norton said in brief remarks that he realized on hearing her name that he knew her family and went to school with some of her relatives.

Michael Madison is brought into court for his arraignment in East Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday.

The Deskins' family supported Angela and provided a place for her to live, the mayor said.

"She always had a place to rest her head, they always assured that she had money to live with," Norton said. "And just when she trusted herself ? she was a very trusting person ? entrusted herself to someone who had the worst of intentions, then and only then did this fate befall her."

Michael Madison, 35, is in custody facing preliminary charges of aggravated murder and kidnapping in the slayings. He is a registered sex offender who served four years in prison beginning in 2002 for attempted rape and attempted possession of drugs.

Madison was moved from the East Cleveland jail Tuesday to Cuyahoga County Jail.

East Cleveland police responded to a call about a foul order on Friday and discovered a body in a garage. Within hours they identified Madison as a suspect and went to his mother's house where he was arrested after a brief standoff.

They found the additional bodies Saturday after their questioning of Madison led them to renew their search.

Authorities searched again Sunday but called it off without finding additional bodies.

Expert Tips For Purchasing Boys Snowboard Clothes | Content for ...

Shopping for kids outdoor clothing can be a challenge at best of times, but attempting to find the right clothing for the cool weather can be trick if you don't know what to look for. Whether you are hitting the slopes in the Alpes or flying like a pro in your regional snow sports center, finding the right snowboard equipment is very crucial. We've assembled an easy to follow guide which will be your bible when it comes to purchasing kids snowboard wear.

Snowboard Jackets.

There are 3 types of ski jackets which you can buy. Here's a quick review of each:

Insulated Jackets.

When it comes to snowboard jackets this is often the most popular. Goose down feathers or artificial fibres are most commonly used in these coats for heat. The external layer of the coat will be gauged for its waterproof levels in mm. One brand of snowboard coats that has been designed with waterproofing as the primary marketing point is Trespass' Tres-Tex range. Insulated jackets can be used for more tasks, not just for snowboarding. Hill walkers and even dog walkers have been known to utilize these in the winter months.

Shell.

The external layer protection is offered by the shell coats. They are not insulated and so are best used with multiple layers, which you can adjust to various conditions and levels of activity. Utilizing a special waterproofing material and being breathable makes shell jackets an excellent choice for protecting against moisture.

3 in 1 Jackets.

The 3 in 1 jacket is very popular as it's so versatile. The 3-in-1 coat combines shell insulation and mid-layers all into one. The removable inner layer of a 3 in 1 jacket is a fantastic feature as you can wear this as a jacket on its own when the weather isn't too cool.

Specialists recommend that you try different jackets to see which ones fit the best and they'll be most comfortable. If your children like to play outside or take part in outdoor activities all year round, the best jacket would be a 3 in 1 as you can remove or add layers to it. This means you can quickly adapt to any weather condition without requiring separate coats.

Snowboard Trousers.

When purchasing ski pants for kids it's advisable to buy ones that closely match the details and spec of the snowboard jackets. Pants with a reinforced knees and seat should be the one crucial design to look for when purchasing ski pants. Not only are beginners going to fall over a lot, but kids are especially likely to take a tumble. Reinforcement will stop any rips and tears, making your trousers last longer and are better value for money.

See to it that your kid has lots of room in their snowboard pants. This is crucial as kids grow extremely quickly and you don't want to have to fork out for expensive ski wear year after year. A good way to avoid doing this is to get snowboard pants with an adjustable waist and plenty of room in the legs.

Design Details.

There are also a few design details you should keep an eye out for when picking a children's ski clothing. Here is a brief list of the key things to look out for:

Waterproof Levels.

Waterproofing depth is another very important attribute to look for in a ski jacket. We advised that ideally your kid's snowboard coat should be waterproof from 10,000 millimetres-- 20,000 millimetres.

Breathability.

While the weather might be cool outside, interior your ski coat you will be working up a sweat from the active energy. A breathable coat will allow any moisture and sweat to escape from the breathable material and still keep you hot.

Venting.

This is utilized for the same reason as breathable coats. Most great snowboard jackets will have zipped vents at the arm pits, which let in cool air and help to cool down the body when it gets too overheated.

Taped Seams.

Having a waterproof coat is excellent but is pointless if your jacket has no taped seams. With waterproof jackets, the stitching in the fabric creates a weak point which can be a problem as water can seep in through the small holes in the fabric.' Taped seams help to stop this, by covering the stitching.

Cuffs.

You will want your kid's snowboard wear to have adjustable cuffs, generally made with Velcro straps. Adjustable cuffs are important to stop ice cold water from running up your arm caused by snow getting in.

Extras.

You can get lots of other extras that can make a terrific addition to your ski jacket or snowboard pants. The main ones that you will most likely use and often need are:

Removable And Adjustable Hood.

Often people pull their hood up over their headgear which can cause trapped wind to get caught in the sides of the hood. A removable or adjustable hood helps with this issue.

Snow skirt.

A snow skirt is included or can be attached onto the bottom of a ski jacket, to prevent snow riding up and onto your back when you wipe out.

Colour.

Purchasing gender neutral colors for your ski clothes is an excellent way to make them last longer. This will ensure that you can hand them down to young siblings, once the elder outgrows it. You can save yourself a lot of money by not having to buy more ski wear every year.

Pockets.

A a lot of people underestimate how much things you need have with you while you're skiing or snowboarding. Most people have important items they need to keep with them. Lift passes, money and smart phones are most common along with your ski goggles. Having inside pockets with zips are wonderful for valuable items like money and your cell phone while specially designed pockets on the outside for lift passes and ski goggles are also an excellent feature. These are small particulars which make your snowboard coat a lot more user friendly.

So now you have the low down on purchasing ski clothes for kids. Next time you're flying off on a ski holiday you will be completely prepared to make the most of your journey!

Study finds high levels of NF-KB in lung cancer tumors can act as a suppressor

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital in China have discovered a gene expression signature that may lead to new immune therapies for lung cancer patients. They found that NF-?B, a protein complex known to promote tumor growth, may also have the ability to boost the immune system to eliminate cancerous cells before they harm, as well as promote antitumor responses.

The study appeared in the June 3 issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

NF-?B is a protein complex that controls gene expression. The regulation of NF-?B also plays an important role in regulating the body's immune response to infection. Incorrect regulation of NF-kB has been linked to cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, septic shock, viral infection, and improper immune development.

"New insight into how tumor pathways regulate the anti-tumor immune response may help us to devise new ways for improving immune therapy," said study lead author Amer Beg, Ph.D., senior member of Moffitt's Immunology Program. "Studies are now underway to start a clinical trial to determine whether the novel gene expression signature described in this work may help initiate new and better immunotherapy treatments."

According to Beg, NF-?B proteins regulate key genes involved in immune response, inflammation, cell death and cell growth. Work in his lab is aimed at a better understanding of how NF-?B regulates immune response and how the consequences of impaired regulation of responses are related to disease.

The researchers analyzed the role of NF-?B in lung cancer cells that were used to develop the NF-?B gene signature. Key studies in mice showed that NF-?B can mediate immune rejection of tumors. The studies were then extended to human tumor specimens. "In this study we found that NF-?B activity is strongly associated with immune system T-cell infiltration in lung cancer," explained study co-author Dung-Tsa Chen, Ph.D., member of the Biostatistics Department at Moffitt. "Multiple genes, capable of enhancing T-cell responses, were found in the NF-?B signature. This means that NF-?B, thought of as a tumor promoter, also helps facilitate an immune response."

Their finding that the presence of high levels of NF-?B in lung cancer tumors can act as a suppressor provides new insight into how tumor pathways regulate the anti-tumor response.

"T-cell presence in tumors can be associated with immune surveillance and improved patient survival," explained Beg. "The focus of immune therapy, boosting T cell-induced responses against solid tumors, has shown considerable promise. However, tolerance-inducing mechanisms and the presence of suppressive cell types in the tumor microenvironment can dampen the response to immunotherapy. Our findings provide new insights into beneficial pathways that also operate in tumors and can regulate anti-tumor responses."

A Southwest Airlines plane landed at New York?s La Guardia Airport safely without its front landing gear.

There are no immediate reports of injuries on? Flight 345 , which originated in Nashville, FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said.

"Southwest Airlines Flight 345, a Boeing 737 arriving at LaGuardia from Nashville, reported possible front landing gear issues before landing," reads a FAA statement emailed to Yahoo! News. "The plane's nose gear collapsed as the aircraft landed on Runway 4 at 5:45 p.m. EDT. The plane safely came to a stop and no injuries were reported. The FAA is investigating."

A spokeswoman with Dallas-based Southwest Airlines said the company is preparing a public statement about the incident and will release it shortly. A statement on the company's website reads:

?Southwest Airlines confirms emergency responders at New York's LaGuardia airport are assisting with an evacuation of flight 345 after the Boeing 737 arrived this evening from Nashville. We will provide further details when available.?

While the airport technically remains open, the FAA said that a ground stop program has been put into effect and that no flights were arriving or departing from the airport while the investigation takes place, as of around 6 p.m. EDT.

It was the latest in a series of unconventional and dangerous landings at airports around the country. In photos posted across social media, the Boeing 737 airplane can be seen resting with its nose on the runway, in which NBC News described as a ?nose gear issue.?

President's Speech: Perspective or Presumption? - (A Civil Assessment)

T.J. O'Hara

RANCHO SANTA FE, Ca., July 23, 2013 ? On July 19, 2013, President Obama chose to speak at a Press Conference about the African American community?s possible perspective of the Trayvon Martin tragedy. Almost immediately, those with a strong predisposition to the Left hailed his speech as one of the most important of his career, while those who lean as heavily toward the Right denounced the speech as racially divisive.

As is usually the case with extreme viewpoints, each position offers a modicum of truth filtered through a lens of political prejudice. The opportunity to make progress is often lost because bias is frequently communicated with more vigor than rational thought.

Let?s start with the possibility that the President?s speech might be one of the most important of his career. Then, we will discuss what elements might have been divisive or at least not fully reflective of an unbiased position.

President Obama is often mentioned as a great orator. Yet, we often only observe his ability to deliver the ideas and words of others; carefully written scripts that are read from a TelePrompTer that reflect his strategists? interpretation of how to present favorable poll data as authored by a team of professional writers. We rarely have a glimpse into the President?s own thoughts and feelings.

In that regard, this was an important speech. It provided insight into a more authentic version of the President; a version that exposed his personal experiences and beliefs. He offered a thoughtful, relatively well-balanced perspective of why the African American community (his term) has become so transfixed with the incident that led to the death of Trayvon Martin.

The President opened his remarks with a sincere expression of sympathy to the Martin family and a well-deserved remark about ?the incredible grace and dignity with which they?ve dealt with the entire situation.? This is a family that has lost a son and still has called upon individuals to temper their actions and to express themselves in a peaceful manner.

Then, the President paid deference to our judicial system. He stated: ?The judge conducted the trial in a professional manner. The prosecution and the defense made their arguments. The juries were properly instructed that in a case such as this reasonable doubt was relevant, and they rendered a verdict. And once the jury has spoken, that?s how our system works.? It would be difficult to argue with the accuracy of that statement.

President Obama then entered into the main focus of his speech by saying, ??I did want to just talk a little bit about context and how people have responded to it and how people are feeling.? It was at this point that he began to reflect upon the circumstances of the incident.

The President said, ?You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.?

From another perspective, if one were to eliminate race as a consideration, any one of us (including the President) could have been Trayvon Martin. We also could have been George Zimmerman. Within the context of our criminal justice system, that is exactly the neutral position that we should assume.

The President continued: ?And when you think about why, in the African American community at least, there?s a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it?s important to recognize that the African American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn?t go away.?

President Obama then offered some thought-provoking examples. ?There are very few African American men in this country who haven?t had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. That includes me. There are very few African American men who haven?t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me ? at least before I was a senator. There are very few African Americans who haven?t had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often.?

He then reached a conclusion when he said, ?? I don?t want to exaggerate this, but those sets of experiences inform how the African American community interprets what happened one night in Florida. And it?s inescapable for people to bring those experiences to bear. The African American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws ? everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws. And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case.?

The President?s conclusion is probably correct. However, should it be the conclusion that is reached, or is it driven by a biased perception?

The President had days to think through the examples he chose. Yet, his examples were delivered only from the perspective of ?African American men.? Perhaps it was because he was reflecting upon his personal experience or because he felt that it was more specific to the circumstances of the shooting incident. However, let?s examine his examples from a broader perspective.

The first example involved security profiling at a mall. Consider the following: If an African-American businessman, dressed in a suit and tie were shopping in a mall and another man (pick the ethnicity or race of your choice) was in the same area of the mall dressed in a far less sophisticated way, who would mall security likely follow? Add a few tattoos, an unshaven beard, and clothes that might be due for a wash to the description of the second individual and watch the profiling begin. You can apply the same scenario to the President?s other examples as well and see an interesting pattern develop.

This is not to ignore or condone profiling that occurs singularly on a basis of race but rather to consider the examples from a broader perspective.? We live in a society that inherently ?profiles? individuals based upon visual cues. We need to acknowledge it and determine what can be done to bring rational thought to this reality.

The President?s next two examples (i.e., ?walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars? and ?getting on an elevator and (seeing) a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off?) are not necessarily racially-specific. Almost every man, regardless of race, has experienced these reactions.

Perhaps this occurs because women may have a heightened sense of vulnerability in the isolated presence of unknown men. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation?s preliminary figures for 2012, approximately 82,000 forcible rapes occurred in our country (or roughly one every 6.5 minutes). Add the 751,131 aggravated assaults and 354,396 robberies that were committed that year as well, and you might begin to build an appreciation for the fact that women intelligently lock their car doors and react with a defensive posture in elevators.

Truth be told, many men follow similar patterns of caution and self-protection (i.e., locking their doors; stepping back in elevators with an increased sense of awareness; subtly checking their wallets in crowds, etc.). As the old adage goes, ?It is better to be safe than sorry.?

Proponents of the President will argue that these experiences are more prevalent in the African American community. Critics of the President will argue that this mindset only further separates the races and promotes additional distrust.

There may be an element of truth in both arguments. However, a different approach would be to acknowledge the experience within the African American community but to recognize that it is shared in other communities as well. Then, we might be able to begin to engage in a productive discuss of how our social issues that can be improved.

A number of detractors of the President claimed that he did not acknowledge the excessive level of crime within the African American community.? This is not true. The President specifically said: ?Now, this isn?t to say that the African American community is na?ve about the fact that African American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system; that they?re disproportionately both victims and perpetrators of violence. It?s not to make excuses for that fact??

He then qualified his comment when he continued, ??although black folks do interpret the reasons for that in a historical context. They understand that some of the violence that takes place in poor black neighborhoods around the country is born out of a very violent past in this country, and that the poverty and dysfunction that we see in those communities can be traced to a very difficult history. And so the fact that sometimes that?s unacknowledged adds to the frustration. And the fact that a lot of African American boys are painted with a broad brush and the excuse is given, well, there are these statistics out there that show that African American boys are more violent ? using that as an excuse to then see sons treated differently causes pain.?

As George Santayana once wrote, ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.??In that regard, the President?s reference may have been relevant to provide a historical perspective upon which others may build an understanding of the African American community?s response. Unfortunately, that assumes that the entire African American community viewed the incident identically, which it did not.

A segment of the African American community did not embrace the idea that race was relevant to the incident that led to Trayvon Martin?s death. One may not have gathered that fact from the President?s speech.

President Obama went on to state, ?I think the African American community is also not na?ve in understanding that, statistically, somebody like Trayvon Martin was statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else. So folks understand the challenges that exist for African American boys. But they get frustrated, I think, if they feel that there?s no context for it and that context is being denied. And that all contributes I think to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, that, from top to bottom, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.?

As the President suggests, ?context? is important and it can be frustrating when it is denied. The President made a generic statement about the ?challenges? that exist for ?African American boys? with whom he has self-identified. Yet, he overcame these challenges, secured an outstanding education, and ultimately became President of the United States. This was a missed opportunity to emphasize what can be achieved when one does not bow the perception of barriers. Perhaps another of Santayana?s passages is apropos, ?A man?s memory may almost become the art of continually varying and misrepresenting his past, according to his interests in the present.?

More importantly, President Obama is Harvard-educated attorney. He had previously described the nature of the criminal justice system and how it had been applied in this trial of George Zimmerman. It seems irresponsible for him to suggest ?that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, that, from top to bottom, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.?

There are a myriad of facts that, if altered, might have created a different outcome. Race is the least relevant of them.

Consider the irony of how the circumstances may have changed had George Zimmerman simply locked his car door (the typical scenario that the President had described earlier). Correspondingly, what would have happened had Trayvon Martin simply continued to his father?s home?

What makes the actions of the participants far more relevant than their race is that each action represented a choice. One?s race offers no such choice.

Society can learn from tragic incidents such as the shooting of Trayvon Martin to build a better future, or it can merely record them and use them as an excuse when they reoccur in the future. We have an opportunity to examine what went wrong and what better choices could have been made, or we can focus on the participants? race, which cannot be controlled in the future any more than they could be controlled in this instance.

President Obama went on to discuss the need for a non-violent response. He set an appropriate expectation with regard to any intervention by the Department of Justice (emphasizing the majority of any related legal issues reside at a State or local level as opposed to the Federal level).

The President touched upon the need for all levels of government to work with law enforcement to ?reduce the kind of mistrust in the system that sometimes currently exists.? He also encouraged us to examine State and local laws (such as ?stand your ground?) to determine ?if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations.?

President Obama then called upon ?business leaders and local elected officials and clergy and celebrities and athletes, and figure out how are we doing a better job helping young African American men feel that they?re a full part of this society and that they?ve got pathways and avenues to succeed.?

It will be interesting to see how this suggestion is perceived by the President?s proponents and opponents. He seemed to be distancing himself from a Federal solution, which might appeal to his opponents since they often express their concerns about the size and scope of Government. Conversely, while his comment addressed the plight of ?African America boys,? it ignored the female side of that community as well of the children of all other races and ethnicities who may similarly suffer from the lack of encouragement and opportunity. That may not stand in good stead with those who normally support him.

President Obama concluded his remarks with an acknowledgment that we need to have productive discussions about race and how we might mitigate the impact of prejudice within our society. He also complimented our emerging generations for making better strides in this direction than the generations that preceded them.

So, let?s take the discussion to next level as suggested by the President. Rather than defaulting to the political position of judging whether his speech provided an appropriate perspective or just fostered a racial presumption, let?s discuss what steps can be taken with or without Government intervention to improve our society. For example:

  • How can we inspire our emerging generations to demonstrate a respect for themselves as well as a respect for others?
  • How can we teach our emerging generations to make intelligent choices in their lives and accept responsibility for their choices?
  • How can we provide nutrition and housing for those who need assistance while providing a pathway to self-reliance?
  • How can we improve the quality of our education and training programs?
  • How can we create more job opportunities, provide more training, attract more business to the United States, etc. to revitalize the economy?
  • Please share your ideas, offer your solutions, or engage in a discussion with others in the comment section. Over the ensuing months, we may explore many of these issues in a more focused way, but for now, let?s see what ideas may surface.

We often become enamored with incidents such as the confrontation between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. Perhaps it is because they stimulate such an emotional response at a visceral level. To often, we do nothing ? only to have similar events occur in the future. Let?s begin a discussion that may help break the cycle and underscore the self-evident truth that ?all men are created equal.?
