It's been nearly a year since Vimeo proudly went universal on iOS, and today the video service has rolled out its application's third major installment. Inside version 3.0, the iOS folk will find a redesigned app with a brand new "tab-based" design and a novel Feed video browser. That's not all, however, as Vimeo's also added the ability to natively share to both Twitter and Facebook, the option to manage vids on the Watch Later queue and a trait which lets users take advantage of background uploads. While most of today's release is filled with an array of video-friendly goods, some iOS users will be disappointed to hear that this new version nixes the editor feature -- however, according to Vimeo, "active" projects can still be downloaded and saved to the Camera Roll app. Those of you interested in checking it out can hit the link below to grab the updated app.
Scientists have developed a new approach for evaluating past climate sensitivity data to help improve comparison with estimates of long-term climate projections developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The sensitivity of global temperature to changes in the Earth's radiation balance (climate sensitivity) is a key factor for understanding past natural climate changes as well as potential future climate change.
Many palaeoclimate studies have measured natural climate changes to calculate climate sensitivity, but a lack of consistent methodologies produced a wide range of estimates as to the exact value of climate sensitivity, which hindered results.
Now a team of international scientists including Eelco Rohling, Professor of Ocean and Climate Change at the University of Southampton, have developed a more consistent definition of climate sensitivity in prehistoric times. When the scientists evaluated previously published estimates for climate sensitivity from a variety of geological episodes over the past 65 million years, they found that the estimates varied over a very wide range of values, with some very high values among them (high values would imply a very strong temperature response to a change in radiative forcing, for example, due to CO2 increase).
The team discovered that this wide range was almost entirely due to the fact that different researchers used different definitions.
Professor Rohling, who is currently based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton but will join the Australian National University next year, says: "Consistent intercomparison is a top priority, because it is central to using past climate sensitivity estimates in assessing the credibility of future climate projections.
"Once we had developed the framework and we had elaborated all the different assumptions and uncertainties, we applied it to climate reconstruction data from the last 65 million years. This caused a much narrower range of estimates, and this range was now defined in such a way that we could directly compare it with estimates in the IPCC assessment for their longer-term (several centuries) outlook."
The scientists found that the likely range of climate sensitivity consistently has been of the order of 2.2 to 4.8 degrees C per doubling of CO2, which closely agrees with the IPCC estimates.
Professor Rohling adds: "Our study only documents what the climate sensitivity has been over the last 65 million years, and how realistic the estimates of the IPCC are in that context. It finds that those estimates are fully coherent with what nature has done in the (natural) past before human-based effects. Hence, it strongly endorses the IPCC's long-term climate projections based on such values: nature shows us it always has, and so likely will again, respond in a way close to what the models suggest, as far as warming is concerned."

The research stems from a three-day Academy Colloquium attended by about 40 internationally renowned specialists in past and present climate studies, held at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam last year.

Shoppers snapped photos of the vice president as he took a spin through the store, including the frozen food section. However, he declined entreaties to check out the tires. "Hey man, I don't need tires," he told the Costco employees in that department. "I don't drive anymore." Some shoppers from Biden's home state of Delaware got especially big hugs and handshakes.
(On Twitter, the jokes came fast and furious: Was the bright-grinned Biden buying an industrial-size pack of Crest Whitestrips? Was he treating Congressman Paul Ryan to the $1.50 hot-dog-and-a-soda meal while Mitt Romney prepared for lunch with President Barack Obama at the White House?) Recent trends in online marketing show that grassroots organizations and charities are becoming increasingly integrated with corporate and SMB marketing efforts, especially in interactive, creative marketing. Today, online contests, social networks, and alternative-reality gaming have become three popular ways that companies grow support for their services by capitalizing on the causes of not-for-profit ventures.
In this post, I want to highlight how SMBs can grow leads by tying their content to the work of non-profit organizations with emotion-driven causes.
Let?s start with online contests.
Quickly becoming a stalwart of cause-oriented social media, contests?especially contests with large cash prizes?have become an exciting way companies can draw massive cause-oriented audiences to their name. At the corporate level, JPMorgan Chase is known among non-profit supporters for their Chase Community Giving contest (3.8 million Facebook likes), in which large sums of money are given out to non-profits that rally their supporters to vote online through Facebook. Through an arrangement with NBC, the top twenty-five organizations are even featured on an award show called the American Giving Awards.
Chase maximizes the return on this interactive marketing technique by constructing landing pages for every non-profit and multiple CTAs that connect voters directly with Chase?s banking opportunities. Although Chase?s model is grandiose and difficult to replicate for a smaller business, the components of what Chase does are great for any company?s Inbound Marketing strategies.
For instance, a contest on social media is now a relatively simple task to manage. Some companies have simple competitions using Facebook ?likes? or hashtags on Twitter and Instagram. Others promote the competition on social media but hold the competition on their own website. YouTube and Vimeo have become popular arenas for contest marketing because the sponsoring company benefits by encouraging non-profits and charities to produce high quality content that drives their supporters directly toward the sponsoring company?s site. At the same time, a contest helps out community organizations, which can grow the sponsor?s reputation.
Niche-specific social networking
Another way companies are utilizing non-profit bases of support is by offering social networking opportunities for causes that the company positions as their social responsibility. Most often, I?ve seen these efforts targeting students, but there a many examples that are more inclusive. One of the more popular, the Dell Social Innovation Challenge, is actually a contest and a social forum combined. Dell, the sponsor, offers groups with great ideas to put forward their cause-oriented concepts in its online social network. There, groups have an opportunity to interact and learn about each other?s work. In the end, there?s a competition among those groups who perform well in the social arena.
Other companies have created social networks as marketing tools much more easily by using pre-made tools. Ning, SocialGo, and Grou.ps are just a few of the many online tools that companies can use to enable social networking beyond social media. Several years ago the outdoor gear company Mountain Hardware had a social network specifically designed for fans to interact and learn about their products. Mountain Hardware used Ning?s services, but they focused their network to provide interactive content that tied to many outdoor interests, which helped to grow their base of support.
Gaming for a cause
While social networking and contests are solid strategies today, some businesses are pushing the envelope by developing tomorrow?s strategies by tapping the online gaming culture. In the last ten years, alternative reality gaming has become a potential way for companies to grow their base by connecting with a broad base of not-for-profit organizations, niche groups, and special interest populations.
Essentially, alternative-reality gaming (ARG) strategies that have been implemented have supplemented online and social media marketing by giving the targeted audience a goal?win the game. The potential of alternative reality gaming is huge because it maximizes interactivity, which seems to be one element that draws people in. A simple example of an ARG is a scavenger hunt. Companies like?SCVNGR.com make it easy for even small companies to set up an online hunt that users all over the world can participate in. Often these types of games utilize teamwork, which draws them back to the cause-oriented contests mentioned earlier.
Contests, social networks, and ARGs are not yet part of your standard Inbound Marketing strategy, but they offer an exciting enhancement that can really get people talking about your brand. Updated 12:30 p.m. ET: Troubled "Mean Girls" actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested at a Manhattan nightclub overnight on an assault charge after she allegedly got into a confrontation with another club patron, police say.
It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the alleged fight at Club Avenue in Chelsea. Police say Lohan hit a woman in the face during an argument. The other patron allegedly involved was not expected to face charges, according to a police source with knowledge of the situation.

She was involved in a NYPD investigation in September after alleging a man had assaulted her in a New York hotel, but charges against the man were later dropped.
Also in September, the actress was accused of clipping a man with her car outside another Manhattan nightclub, but prosecutors chose not to move ahead with charges.

The adoption today of a resolution against female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UN General Assembly?s human rights committee is a major boost to civil society organizations fighting for an end to the abusive practice, Amnesty International said. ? This is the first time the Assembly?s Third Committee, which addresses social, humanitarian and human rights issues, has adopted a resolution on FGM ? the cutting of a girl?s genitalia often without anaesthetic in conditions that risk potentially fatal infection. ? ?FGM is an indictment of us all ? that a girl or young woman can be held down and mutilated is a violation of her human rights and ? shockingly ? an estimated three million girls are at risk each year,? said Jos? Luis D?az, Amnesty International?s UN representative in New York. ? ?Vitally, this UN resolution places FGM in a human rights framework and calls for a holistic approach, stressing as it does the importance of empowerment of women, promotion and protection of sexual and reproductive health and breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence.? ? FGM is commonplace in 28 countries in Africa as well as in Yemen, Iraq, Malaysia, Indonesia and in certain ethnic groups in South America. ? However it is an issue of worldwide concern. Women and girls in diaspora communities can be at risk of being subjected to FGM. ? Amnesty International sees the UN resolution as a reminder to governments that they need to develop national action plans, beyond laws, and ensure that they are well-resourced and monitored, in order to raise awareness. ? The resolution makes clear too that this is something that must involve all those affected ? including men and boys ? if we are to finally end this practice. ? ?It is important to highlight that FGM is a gender-based and child-specific persecution and the UNHCR ? the UN refugee agency - has established that a girl or woman seeking asylum because she has been compelled to undergo, or is likely to be subjected to FGM, can qualify for refugee status,? said D?az. Protection of refugee women at risk of having undergone FGM must be integrated into the overall strategy for protection. ? The resolution makes concrete recommendations for prevention of FGM, for protecting girls at risk, ending impunity and provision of support services to those suffering from the lifelong consequences. Amnesty International urges governments to implement these recommendations urgently. ? The resolution on FGM adopted by the Assembly?s Third Committee is expected to be endorsed by the General Assembly Plenary in December.? Although not legally binding, UN General Assembly resolutions carry considerable moral and political weight.
Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) on Tuesday pressed his fellow Republicans to go along with President Barack Obama's plan to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans for the time being in order to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff."
In an interview with Politico, the Republican said he has encouraged his colleagues in the House to extend the Bush tax rates for incomes below $250,000 immediately, after which they could push for an extension of the cuts for incomes above that level. Without any congressional action, all of the Bush tax cuts will expire on Jan. 1.
"I think we ought to take the 98 percent deal right now," Cole told Politico. "It doesn't mean I agree with raising the top two. I don't."
Cole expressed his position during a meeting of the House GOP whip team on Tuesday, arguing that voting for an extension on the cuts for all but the top 2 percent would stop an increase for most Americans and put Republicans in a better position to fight higher rates for the top earners down the road.
His statement caught several Republican offices off guard on Tuesday night, with aides saying that they hadn't heard of his comments until they were posted online.
A top Republican aide told The Huffington Post that leadership continued to hold the belief that tax rates should not be raised as part of a fiscal cliff deal and that, instead, lawmakers should look toward raising revenue by closing tax loopholes and limiting deductions.
Senate Democrats, who earlier this year passed a bill extend the Bush tax cuts for incomes under $250,000, were pleased with the comments.
"We agree with Congressman Cole," said Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). "Speaker Boehner should take up the Senate-passed bill to extend the middle-class tax cuts right away."
The position is a shift for Cole, who has served as a Deputy Whip for the party's House conference and once chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee. The Oklahoma Republican penned an editorial earlier this month warning about the potential dangers of increasing taxes on the wealthy.
"Allowing taxes to rise for just the top brackets may seem like an acceptable middle ground by comparison, but this path would be enormously damaging to the economy," he wrote.
Cole said Tuesday that he doesn't see his proposal as a violation of Grover Norquist's anti-tax pledge, which many of his Republican colleagues have nevertheless disavowed in recent days.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Bomb threats to 30 courthouses and other government buildings across Tennessee forced many to be evacuated Tuesday, including the federal building in Memphis, but authorities said no explosives were found.
Tennessee became the fourth state to deal with similar bomb hoaxes. One targeted 28 courthouses in Oregon and similar threats were reported in Nebraska and Washington this month.
Nine threats were reported in West Tennessee counties ? including the Memphis federal building ? seven in Middle Tennessee and 14 in East Tennessee, said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.
No arrests have been made in Tennessee and authorities had searched about 14 courthouses by Tuesday afternoon.
Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, said the threats were made by telephone to court clerk offices. "It's been going on all morning," said Heidt.
The threats to courthouses in Ashland City and Clinton were made by men.
"It was just a man's voice saying simply if this is the Cheatham County Courthouse you're about to be blown up, and it startled me. So I just said I'm sorry. I tried to get him to repeat himself and that's when it just cut off and I thought 'Oh my,'" Cheatham County deputy clerk Rebecca Nicholson told WTVF-TV.
Anderson County Clerk Jeff Cole told The Knoxville News Sentinel that a man's voice simply said "There's a bomb in the building" and hung up.
The FBI is working closely with state authorities and will pursue federal charges if necessary, said Joel Siscovic, the bureau's spokesman in Memphis.
The federal building in Memphis houses the federal court and offices for the Department of Justice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. It was cleared around 9 a.m. for a couple of hours while authorities checked it.
Police temporarily blocked a trolley line that ran by the federal building in Memphis and brought in a dog to search the building before letting people return around 11 a.m.
According to Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph, a woman called police around 8:30 a.m. and said she had information that someone was going to blow up the county criminal justice center, the federal building and a main U.S. Post Office in the city.
All three locations were searched and nothing was found, she said.

International analysis finds that countries using high fructose corn syrup in their food supply have a 20 percent higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes
LOS ANGELES AND OXFORD, U.K. A new study by University of Southern California (USC) and University of Oxford researchers indicates that large amounts of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) found in national food supplies across the world may be one explanation for the rising global epidemic of type 2 diabetes and resulting higher health care costs.
The study reports that countries that use HFCS in their food supply had a 20 percent higher prevalence of diabetes than countries that did not use HFCS. The analysis also revealed that HFCS's association with the "significantly increased prevalence of diabetes" occurred independent of total sugar intake and obesity levels.
The article, "High Fructose Corn Syrup and Diabetes Prevalence: A Global Perspective," is published in the journal Global Public Health.
"HFCS appears to pose a serious public health problem on a global scale," said principal study author Michael I. Goran, professor of preventive medicine, director of the Childhood Obesity Research Center and co-director of the Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. "The study adds to a growing body of scientific literature that indicates HFCS consumption may result in negative health consequences distinct from and more deleterious than natural sugar."
The paper reports that out of 42 countries studied, the United States has the highest per capita consumption of HFCS at a rate of 25 kilograms, or 55 pounds, per year. The second highest is Hungary, with an annual rate of 16 kilograms, or 46 pounds, per capita. Canada, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Argentina, Korea, Japan and Mexico are also relatively high HFCS consumers. Germany, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Egypt, Finland and Serbia are among the lowest HFCS consumers. Countries with per capita consumption of less than 0.5 kilogram per year include Australia, China, Denmark, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay.
Countries with higher use of HFCS had an average prevalence of type 2 diabetes of 8 percent compared to 6.7 percent in countries not using HFCS.
"This research suggests that HFCS can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, which is one of the most common causes of death in the world today," said study co-author Professor Stanley Ulijaszek, director of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford.
The article proposes that this link is probably driven by higher amounts of fructose in foods and beverages made with HFCS. Fructose and glucose are both found in ordinary sugar (sucrose) in equal amounts, but HFCS has a greater proportion of fructose. The higher fructose content makes HFCS sweeter and provides processed foods with greater stability and better appearance because of the more consistent browning color when foods made with higher fructose are baked.
In a previous related study, the authors found that the fructose content in some U.S.-produced soft drinks, especially the most popular, was about 20 percent higher than expected, suggesting that some manufacturers might be using HFCS with more fructose than previously estimated. Such differences could "potentially be driving up fructose consumption in countries that use HFCS," the researchers said. The study notes the difficulty in determining the actual amount of fructose in foods and beverages made with HFCS because of "a lack of industry disclosure on food labels."
Growing evidence reveals that the body metabolizes fructose differently from glucose. Among other things, fructose metabolism occurs independently of insulin, primarily in the liver where it may be readily converted to fat, which likely contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition on the rise in Hispanics in the U.S. and Mexico.
"Most populations have an almost insatiable appetite for sweet foods, but regrettably our metabolism has not evolved sufficiently to be able to process the fructose from high fructose corn syrup in the quantities that some people are consuming it," said Ulijaszek. "Although this syrup can be found in many of our processed foods and drinks, this varies enormously from country to country."
The U.S. is the single largest consumer of high fructose corn syrup. By the late 1990s HFCS made up 40 percent of all caloric sweeteners and was the predominant sweetener in soft drinks sold in the U.S. However, since 2008, exports of HFCS from the U.S. to Mexico increased "exponentially" after trade restrictions were removed, the researchers said. They call for updated public health strategies requiring better labeling of fructose and HFCS content in processed foods.
To explain the varying degrees of HFCS consumption in the European Union, the researchers note that trade and agricultural policies set quotas for HFCS production, and while some countries, such as Sweden and the U.K., do not take their assigned quotas, other countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia, are able to purchase extra quotas from countries that do not accept them. The findings of the paper thus have important implications for global trade policies that may affect public health.
"If HFCS is a risk factor for diabetesone of the world's most serious chronic diseasesthen we need to rewrite national dietary guidelines and review agriculture trade polices," said Tim Lobstein, director of policy for the International Association for the Study of Obesity. "HFCS will join trans fats and salt as ingredients to avoid, and foods should carry warning labels."

Fresh from the campaign trail and mulling his options for the future, former vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan will play a pivotal role in negotiations over the fiscal cliff and faces a choice of two paths.
The Wisconsin congressman, known for his zeal for budget cutting, could opt for ideological purity and emerge as a leading voice urging his fellow Republicans to resist tax increases and demand steep cuts in entitlement spending.
Or he could use his role as House Budget Committee chairman to push for the best deal possible for Republicans but then demonstrate bipartisanship by getting behind a compromise.
Either path holds perils for the Republican lawmaker, who became an instant focus of speculation as a potential 2016 White House contender following his failed vice presidential bid. If he insists on too hard a line in the budget talks, he could potentially open a rift with other leaders in his party and get blamed for scuttling a deal. On the other hand, any compromise could leave Ryan open to criticism from the Republican base and vulnerable to a challenger from the right in 2016.
Republican strategist Steve Schmidt said Ryan has an incentive to work toward an agreement.
?The ability to show you've been practical, the ability to show that you've compromised, the ability to show that you have bent the negotiations in your direction and got the best deal that you can, all of those things position you better than pure ideology in the context of a presidential campaign,? said Schmidt, a top adviser to John McCain?s 2008 presidential campaign. ?He has the ability to provide leadership in a situation like this and perhaps this will be his greatest test.?
But Ryan?s own history suggests that he would not cut any deal unless it went far enough toward his top priority: curbing spending on Medicare and other entitlements. When he served on the Simpson-Bowles deficit-reduction commission in 2010, he was one of seven on the 18-member panel who voted against the final proposal because he felt it didn?t do enough to restructure Medicare and thought the proposed increase in tax revenue was too high. The proposal fell three votes short of the ?supermajority? of 14 it would have needed to be sent to Congress for a vote.
In 2011, Ryan asked to be left off the supercommittee that was tasked with identifying further savings in the wake of a debt-ceiling agreement. He cited his own budget work and voiced doubts about how much the group could achieve. It did indeed fail, which is why lawmakers and the White House must now use the current lame-duck session of Congress to try to avert the $1.2 trillion in automatic budget cuts known as the sequester set to kick in at the start of next year.
This time, Ryan has more skin in the game. As a member of House leadership, he does not have the option of sitting out the fiscal cliff negotiations. In a change from the debt-ceiling talks, he has joined the daily Republican leadership meetings, alongside Ways and Means chairman Dave Camp, Committee on Energy and Commerce chairman Fred Upton. ?Chairman Ryan is back here because he wants to solve these problems,? said Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck.
House GOP staff, including Austin Smythe, the Budget Committee?s staff director, huddled with White House aides on the Hill last week to begin talking about the broad concepts that will guide negotiations, though no dollar amounts have been set yet. After Thanksgiving, once concepts are nailed down, the principals can begin negotiating.
Ryan has publicly echoed House Speaker John Boehner in signaling openness to revenue increases but not higher tax rates, meaning he might support the closing of tax loopholes or other revenue-raising steps. He was privy to the wording that Boehner used in the public remarks on the fiscal cliff he delivered the day after the election. ?He opposes raising tax rates because doing so would stifle economic growth and cost jobs,? said Conor Sweeney, a Ryan spokesman. He added that Ryan wants to see what the White House?s opening argument will be and whether President Obama will ?offer responsible solutions, identify specific spending cuts, and demonstrate leadership to tackle this pressing challenge.?
Ryan will press ?very, very hard? on long-term entitlement reform, said Bill Hoagland, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has been in touch with Ryan?s staff.
If Ryan can wring concessions from Democrats on entitlements, it could help his presidential ambitions. ?If he's running in two or four years from now he'll be able to say [the deficit was reduced] because of my insistence on entitlement reform,? said Hoagland, who is now a senior vice president at the Bipartisan Policy Center.
Republicans feel confident in pressing for long-term entitlement reform as part of ?grand bargain? negotiations because polling on Medicare during the campaign suggested the issue was not a major liability for Ryan and Republican White House nominee Mitt Romney, despite a barrage of Democratic attacks zeroing in on the Wisconsin congressman?s Medicare plan.
Eric Ueland, Frist?s former chief of staff, said Republicans recognize that Ryan might have to cede some ground in the budget talks because Democrats hold a significant amount of leverage, given that they still control the Senate and that President Obama won his re-election bid. ?What he does and what he?s able to do is judged against the baseline,? said Ueland, now a vice president at the Duberstein Group.
But Ryan?s critics doubt Democrats will be able to negotiate with him. ?Nothing we?ve seen so far under Chairman Ryan suggests that he?s willing and or capable of negotiating bipartisan legislation. Hope springs eternal but I don?t have a lot of it,? said Jim Manley, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who is now at QGA Public Affiars.
Instead of seeing his national stature enhanced, Manley said he hopes Ryan will become an ?afterthought? in the negotiations if he refuses to make any concessions. Alternatively, he could complicate Boehner?s ability to negotiate a deal by presenting a challenge from the right.
But Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former Congressional Budget Office director, predicted Republican House lawmakers would present a united front. ?This is not a case where the administration?s going to divide and conquer,? said Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum.
Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist disagreed with the notion that the congressman would feel pressure to water down his own principles in order to portray himself as a pragmatic dealmaker. ?He will be both a man who can sell a plan to the rank and file and can sell a no vote to Boehner,? said Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.
Steven Smith, a political science professor at Washington University in St. Louis, wrote in an email that Ryan might emulate former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn, a powerful voice on national security issues. In Ryan?s case, he could take a hard line during negotiations and only offer his support for a Boehner-backed deal at the last minute. For Nunn, this offered the appearance that he was careful and principled. But, Smith warned, ?This is not an easy path for a prospective presidential candidate.?
?First, endorsing a moderate solution risks alienating the core of the party,? he wrote, noting that it was unlikely Nunn could have won his party's nomination for president. ?Second, a long-term deal may take budget issues off the agenda and reduce the advantage that Ryan has over the field of candidates. Unfortunately, the alternative path, playing to the right and standing in the way of a Boehner deal with Obama, is not likely to be popular with the general electorate.?
For now, Ryan is keeping his cards close to the vest. Bill Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard and a leader in the effort to get Ryan into presidential politics, professed no knowledge of Ryan?s intentions.
?My strategy is to acknowledge Obama won, cut the best deal you can, and live to fight another day for big tax and entitlement reform,? he wrote in an e-mail.

However, this does not necessarily mean that the wind turbines cannot be located in other parts of the country.? There is also a major misconception that most of the eco-friendly homes or the green homes usually take very long to repay the cost of the construction.? While the initial cost of the installation may take a small amount of time to pay itself in terms of bills, what most people do no consider is the additional value that such installations add to the home.? As such, most people view these installations as investments instead of looking at them as additional value to the piece of real estate.? This is supported by the fact that in most cases, the value of the green homes is generally higher than that of their counterparts.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? You may have received CPR training some time ago, but would you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Would you know what to do in the event of an earthquake or a fire? A new UCLA psychology study shows that people often do not recall things they have seen -- or at least walked by -- hundreds of times.
For the study, 54 people who work in the same building were asked if they knew the location of the fire extinguisher nearest their office. While many of the participants had worked in their offices for years and had passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 13 out of the 54 -- 24 percent -- knew the location.
When asked to find a fire extinguisher, however, everyone was able to do so within a few seconds; most were surprised they had never noticed them. The researchers found no significant differences between men and women, or between older and younger adults.
"Just because we've seen something many times doesn't mean we remember it or even notice it," said Alan Castel, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA and lead author of the study. "If I asked you to draw the front of a dime or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that? You might get some elements right. Do you know who the president is? On the dime, is he facing left or right? Does it say 'In God We Trust' on the front of the dollar or the back? Do you know what else it says? You've seen it so many times, but you probably haven't paid much attention to it."
Castel said that not noticing things isn't necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. "It might be a good thing not to burden your memory with information that is not relevant to you," he said.
But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are or what to do in an emergency, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.
"When you're on an airplane, do you know where the life vest is and what to do in the event of an emergency?" Castel asked. "You've been told many times, but how would you respond under stressful conditions, when there could be smoke and people screaming?"
A few months after being asked the location of the nearest fire extinguisher, the study participants were asked again if they knew where the closest one was. All of them knew.
"We don't notice something if we're attending to something else," Castel said. "Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we're almost blind to them until they become relevant."
What does this tell us about the importance of training, whether for emergencies or something as common as learning a new computer program?
Castel stresses that making errors during training is useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors -- or simple oversights -- can teach us that we don't know something well and need to pay more attention in order to remember it.
"It's good if errors happen during training and not during an event where you need the information," he said. "That's part of the learning process."
The study is published in the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics.
Castel's co-authors are Michael Vendetti, a UCLA psychology graduate student, and Keith Holyoak, a UCLA professor of psychology. The study's participants work in UCLA's psychology building.

At the start of this month Samsung announced that channel sales of its mini-tablet-sized smartphone, the Galaxy Note II, had passed three million unit sales in 37 days on sale. Now the Korean mobile maker has announced that cumulative global channel sales of the device have exceeded five million after around two months since launch.
MILAN (AP) -Roma won 1-0 at struggling Pescara in the Italian league on Sunday to mark a happy return for coach Zdenek Zeman to the club he steered to promotion as Serie B winners last season.
Mattia Destro gave Roma the lead in the fifth minute and could have added to his tally but missed several clear chances.
Pescara went close to the equalizer in the closing stages but remains mired in the relegation zone after winning only one of its past eight games.
It was the 100th official game in charge of Roma for Zeman, who is in his second spell at the club.
Elsewhere, Fiorentina's run of five successive victories ended after twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 at Torino.
Roma had lost three of its past four away games but got off to the perfect start when Pescara goalkeeper Mattia Perin could only parry Francesco Totti's fierce 35-meter free kick into the path of Destro for a simple tap-in.
Destro could have doubled his tally on the half hour, but Perin did well to palm away his header from the center of the area following Totti's cross.
Destro had another two great chances in the second half, skying his first effort over the bar before firing straight at Perin from close range with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Elvis Abbruscato could have leveled at the end, but his effort was deflected out by Roma defender Ivan Piris.
In Turin, Fiorentina fought back for a point thanks to a late equalizer from substitute Mounir El Hamdaoui but lost Alberto Aquilani and Luca Toni to injury in the first half.
Toni went off after feeling the after-effects of a nasty clash of heads with Kamil Glik, which resulted in the Torino defender being carried off after appearing to briefly lose consciousness.
Alessio Cerci, who is on loan from Fiorentina, gave Torino the lead in the 40th minute as Danilo D'Ambrosio's cross was allowed to go all the way across the area before being fired in.
Haris Seferovic almost equalized shortly after the hour mark but his effort from a tight angled crashed off the post.
It was back on level terms when Juan Cuadrado was brought down in the area by D'Ambrosio and Gonzalo Rodriguez stepped up to fire home the resulting spot kick.
Torino restored its lead moments later in somewhat comical circumstance as Valter Birsa's cross evaded everyone and ended up in the back of the net.
Fiorentina snatched a point six minutes from time when El Hamdaoui, who had only been on the pitch for less than two minutes, smashed home the equalizer.
Genoa is out of the relegation zone after ending a run of six successive defeats with a 1-0 win at Atalanta.
Andrea Bertolacci scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute to hand Genoa its first win in 10 matches.
Genoa's Emiliano Moretti was sent off for a second yellow card four minutes from time.
Bologna has slipped into the relegation zone after losing 1-0 at Sampdoria.
It played almost the entire match in 10 men after Archimede Morleo was sent off in the fifth minute for bringing down Mauro Icardi as the Sampdoria striker was about to run clear through on goal.
Andrea Poli, who scored his first Serie A goal last weekend, grabbed the only goal of the game in the 61st, playing a one-two with Eder before firing past Bologna goalkeeper Federico Agliardi.
Elsewhere, Siena drew 0-0 at Chievo Verona.
Substitute Chievo striker Mamadou Samassa was sent off five minutes from time after picking up a second yellow card for a dive in the area.
