Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee, Insurance Society of ...

November 20, 2012 ??The Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee, a non-profit organization comprised of volunteers closely associated with the Philadelphia Fire Department, and the Insurance Society of Philadelphia (ISOP) announced the results of the Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee fundraiser held during the 2012 Independence Gala, an annual event supporting the Insurance Society and ISOP?s 100th?Anniversary Scholarship Fund.

The 2012 Independence Gala was held at the Loews Hotel on Wednesday, November 14.? Through a live text-to-pledge format during the Gala, attendees pledged $45,671.84 in about 30 minutes to the Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee fundraiser.? The money raised will be used to buy smoke alarms with 10-year, non-removable batteries, which retail for around $12 each, for needy Philadelphia families.? The Philadelphia Contributionship, an insurance company founded by Benjamin Franklin and the first of its kind in the United States, sponsored the cost of the text-to-pledge format used to garner donations.

?The funds raised Wednesday evening will support efforts to get life-saving smoke alarms to families in need,? said Mayor Michael A. Nutter.? ?Commissioner Ayers and the members of the Philadelphia Fire Department know how important it is to have working smoke alarms in every home in the City of Philadelphia.? The tremendous generosity of the Gala attendees will go a long way towards accomplishing that goal.?

On October 9, 2012, Mayor Nutter signed into law a bill requiring that all one- and two-family residences in the City of Philadelphia have smoke alarms with 10-year, non-removable batteries.? When smoke alarms are present in a home, the chances of the people in that home surviving a fire increase dramatically.? Requiring smoke alarms to have 10-year, non-removable batteries increases the likelihood that smoke alarms will work when they are needed.

?The warmest ?thank-yous? and appreciation would not be enough to express my personal gratitude towards such a wonderful group as the Insurance Society of Philadelphia,? said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers.? ?Company by company, agency by agency and person to person the members of the Insurance Society of Philadelphia help to put peoples? lives back together after tragic losses. They are so much like firefighters: there when you need them. Now in a very proactive way, the Society has chosen to partner in helping Philadelphia become the safest city in America. The smoke alarms purchased with the proceeds from this fundraiser will save countless lives and we salute them for that.?

Ken Ewell, President and COO of The Graham Company and member of the Independence Gala Dinner Committee partnered with David Arnold, President of the Insurance Society of Philadelphia and Commissioner Lloyd Ayers to bring the smoke alarm fundraising effort to the 2012 Independence Gala.

?The entire Philadelphia-based insurance and risk management community could not be more thrilled to have such a fitting cause to support,? said David Arnold.? ?We are grateful to Mayor Nutter, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Chief of Staff Everett Gillison, Fire Commissioner Ayers and the Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee for allowing us to join them in the fight to save precious lives in our great city.?

The Independence Gala Dinner Committee is comprised of members of the Insurance Society of Philadelphia?s Board of Directors and other industry leaders from the Philadelphia region.? The mission of the Dinner Committee is to elevate the status of the professional insurance community by emphasizing leadership, philanthropy, education and professionalism.
