Theatre Review: Anything Goes

The Roundabout Theatre Company is known for its high calibre productions and top rate performers. The RTC's production of Anything Goes, which was the 2011 Tony Award winning best revival of a musical, exceeded my expectations and embodied everything that a classic musical should have.?

Cole Porter has written, arguably, some of the most timeless, romantic melodies for musical theatre. Many of his best known songs such as You're the Top, De-lovely, of course the title song, Anything Goes were sung beautifully by the multi-talented cast members of this most endearing musical comedy. While there are countless subplots with archetypal characters lacking deeper development, the narrative is amusing, light, and humorous. Anything can happen on an ocean liner with lovers, crooks with mistaken identities, and divas all interacting to get what they want while helping their friends along the way. ?

Actress, Rachel York as the diva and star of the show, plays the part of Reno Sweeney with old world glamour and class. York is a true triple-threat in every sense of the word, who acts, sings, and dances brilliantly well. As the star entertainer aboard the ship, her powerful rendition of Blow, Gabriel, Blow literally stopped the show, and in true diva fashion, she basked in the spotlight a little longer than necessary for added effect. As the debonair gentleman, Billy, actor Josh Franklin did not quite have a commanding presence, but did a respectable job juggling the numerous characters he portrayed. Strong ensemble members added bubbling energy and enthusiasm to help support the leads.?
Jaw-dropping dance numbers were remarkably choreographed by director and Tony Award winner, Kathleen Marshall. Her toe-tapping dance numbers almost had me dancing in the aisles! The romanticism Marshall injected in her production is evocative of a simpler, sentimental time when true love triumphs against insurmountable odds. ?

You cannot afford to miss this Cole Porter classic with its old fashioned charm, soaring melodies, and memorable dance numbers; see it before it sails away!?
