Mouth Guard: A Protective Item For Anyone Participating In ...

Football, hockey, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and volleyball are examples of contact sports that often report cases of mouth and teeth injuries among players. As such, players of these sports regard mouth guards as among the most important safety gears that they should have. Nonetheless, wearing them alone is not enough; it is a must that it is worn appropriately and is of the highest quality to provide utmost protection.

A mouth guard also known as mouth protector, mouth piece or gum shield, is protective covering which are custom fitted and are worn over the teeth to protect them from injury during sports and recreational activities in order to protect them from damage. They can be worn on the upper or lower teeth, be hard or soft, and may cover all or some of the teeth. If properly fitted, it can help prevent broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. They buffer the damage that can be caused by blows and physical contact. They also act as a barrier between teeth/braces and the cheeks, between the lips and tongue in order to limit the risk of soft tissue damage. Other than these, a mouth guard can also help prevent damage to teeth due to sleep disorders, such as grinding of the teeth.

A mouth guard can be a mold that is fitted by a dentist or orthodontist from an impression of ones? teeth. This is what we refer to as ?custom made? and is mostly made of hard plastic. Depending on the user?s need, a dentist may also prescribe the soft vinyl type. On the other hand, there are also those that can be bought from pharmacies or sporting good stores. They come in a variety of sizes including small, medium, large, or one size fits all. This kind of mouth guard is described as a soft ?boil and bite? item which is complete with simple instructions on how to use it. They are for temporary use and can be very valuable for certain circumstances.

A perfectly fitted mouth guard is very important in order to provide the utmost protection to your teeth. It allows normal speaking and does not limit the breathing capabilities of the user. It should also stay in place during the action of the game even when the player does excessive movements. Thirdly, a well fitted mouth guard provides a high degree of comfort and should not hinder the player?s performance. Ideal mouth guards are also durable and easy to clean and at the same time be resilient, tear resistant, odorless and tasteless.

Anyone can use a mouth guard regardless of age and gender. However, these are highly recommended to those who play contact sports such as football, boxing, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey. Players who are into non-contact sports but are posed with the risk of mouth injury every now and then should also wear them. They can help sports players reduce the risk of mouth-related injuries as well as avoid chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage to a tooth, or even tooth loss.

Caution is always necessary in whatever we do. As such, it is always important to wear safety gears when we perform activities that would pose us to high risks of injuries. Mouth guards, for example, are a great safety gear that may reduce, or prevent all together teeth injuries that may be incurred in the event of an accident.
