Well-placed sources told TheNation that top political and military leadership, which met at the Presidency, also rejected the US proposal for independent CIA intelligence operations on Pakistani soil.
Sources said that the meeting, which was chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and attended by the Prime Minister, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), the Services Chiefs and the Secretary Defence, had a detailed discussion and all unanimously rejected the US proposal.
The meeting decided to resist such attempts that undermine sovereignty and security of the country and vowed to protect national interest at all costs.
The participants discussed threadbare the challenges relating to national security and decided to uphold the decisions of the sovereign parliament, particularly its unanimous resolution adapted on May 13.
The meeting which lasted for more than three hours discussed a number of other issues including the inland situation, regional security and steps recommended by the parliament with regards to sovereignty and security of the country.
Sources said that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani took into confidence President Zardari on the decisions taken during the Federal Cabinet?s Defence Committee while Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani took the President into confidence on the decisions taken at the Corps Commanders? Conference.
General Kiyani also apprised the meeting of his interaction with CIA Director Leon Panetta who had sought joint efforts by the Pakistan Army and the US military in taking on high-value targets and direct operations of the CIA.
Sources said that the COAS also apprised the meeting of his blunt no to Panetta about the US boots on Pakistani soil, and instead had offered him a reciprocal and transparent framework for intelligence-sharing between the CIA and the ISI.
The meeting also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, the US exit strategy and the Afghan-led reconciliation process.
A brief handout issued from the Presidency said that Prime Minister Gilani called on President Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr today.
General Khalid Shameem Wynne, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Army Staff, Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of Air Staff and Lt Gen(R) Syed Athar Ali, Secretary Defence, were also present during the meeting.
Security situation was discussed during the meeting.
